I don't think that believing the government would impose martial law is nonsense or even farfetched. When you look at all the crap going on today in our society, I would say that martial law has a pretty good chance of happening. Look what we did to the Japanese in the U.S. during WW2 (and let's not forget about all the political prisoners FDR had). I'm sure they thought the same thing until they woke up in a relocation camp or in prison.
