Aching to do something

Has anyone ever experienced this?

Last night I was watching E.T. with my pops, and after the movie, as I do with every movie I watch, I went to the Special Features menu and checked it out.
As I was watching the "Making Of" featurette, I actually began to ache with a desire to make movies.
I'd never experienced something like that before. It was so weird.
I've wanted to direct/write films for a long time, but it's never hit me before like that. I started feeling that I was in the wrong major and that my life is incomplete unless I do this.

I'd always felt it just as a passing interest until last night, now I'm looking at film schools and whatnot. Very odd experience indeed.

What are you majoring in?

That feeling hits me with physics and related areas. I'd act on it. I'm 28 and have been somewhat lazy about it. Don't make the same mistake.

I've had that many times. Learning to sing, joining a band, taking dance classes, becoming a psychiatrist, moving to a different country. Of course, aching to make out with my crush, but that's another thing. It suddenly stops being an interest and becomes a death sentence. You can almost hear the tic-tac.

Scary stuff.

Currently getting my Associates Degree in General Science

My dream was to become a Secret Service Agent or some sort of government spy, but I don't think I could ever give my freedom up to a government that still doesn't have fully just laws. Especially considering that, in order to work my way up there, I'd have to work in law enforcement and put druggies away. Problem is, part of me still wants to go down that path.

Elis, if you don't have any logical reason not to work in the film industry, why not? Unless you're wanting a particular job that might be difficult to get.

I want to be a writer and director, but the only real reason I didn't get into it is practicality. I don't want to be one of those "starving artists" that ends up waiting tables a block from Grauman's Chinese Theatre until I'm 50.
But Idk, maybe I should take the leap...

I say go for it, but get all the information you can upfront. You want to be realistic in your goals as well. Starting out you are never going to be directing a major movie. Through maybe you end up coming out of school, becoming an intern for a while, then directing a commercial, then with time you finally become a director of a big movie. Or maybe you do a low budget one and make nothing for it, but it gives you experience which helps you later.

If you are willing to work in other positions besides writing or director, its probably even easier to get into film. Just get the information first, consider it logically, and find a path to accomplish what it is you want. No reason you can't do what you want to.

Well, why don't you try writing first..? It's not as if you have to take a leap out of a career, just try it in your spare time.

Elis, go for it! Most jobs suck. That one doesn't. Follow your passion because it leads to the careers that make you the happiest. If you go to film school, you can help make all kinds of videos and very possibly low budget movies while you keep trying to get big movies made. If you have ability, that is not an unrealistic path to take.

Go for it. Do you know anyone that could find you a short internship to check this out more in-depth?

I get the same feelings about being in like a band, acting, writing, being a martial artist. :banana:

I felt the same way about music when I started getting into Frank Zappa's stuff, and 2 years later I feel all the more serious about it. I'm starting to realize I was just denying my own nature arguing against it.

I think when it comes to the creative arts, whatever they be, its all about how hard ones goes for it. Steven Speilberg knew he was serious about making movies early on, and was driven. I've heard stories of him relentlessly calling/visiting and eventually befriending executives and idols when he was in his teens. If you're serious (and it sounds to me like you are), I assure you sitting around thinking about it is only gonna create more self-doubt and keep you from getting things done. You gotta act. Unfortunately for me I idled around for a year confused by the urge my parents think I'm a fool for having, and all it got me was poor grades in what I was studying at the time.

At any rate I say go for it. Use the internet to find some reading material, and see if there's anything in your area you can get involved with. Act right away, the sooner the better.

Oh babeh, I've had the ache since watching the movie "Ip Man".

just keep your "9-5" and practice on your aspirations/passions on the side, you really can't argue with that kind of advice.

Why not keep up with the major you've got and make films on the side? Do it for a year, make 3-5 films and see how it feels. If your really into it, change your major, but if you want to make films you gotta do the work yourself. No class is gonna show you how.

If I were you I'd sign up for a film class next semester and meet with an advisor or prof from the film department and express your intrest. Talking to a professor would be a really good idea. If you get to know them they could give you permision to use the schools labs and equipment. It's not the classes or the degree that will make you into a director, but the time and energy you put ino it.

Personally I had the opposite experience with film. I started in film but wasn't really feeling it. I just sat in my room and smoked and played guitar all day. So I changed to music.
