I am not proud of my country and I don't understand why I should be.
I am not ashamed of my country and I don't understand why I should be.
Works both ways. I don't really care where I, or anybody else, was born.
Haha, I'm so glad you posted that.
I personally love the US of A, and I hate everyone who lives here and talks shit about it.

I'm a human, I don't have a country, I have a race and I'm not proud of my race but I'm happy that I was born to be human.
This isn't as easy as yes or no...
It's March 31, 1960... First nations are given the right to vote without having
a) to had been in the military
b) to sign a form waiving any connection to their heritage (status)
First Nations were second last to mentally handi-capped people for being able to vote. The US had granted First Nations the right to vote 40 years earlier than Canada! It's bad enough that the gov't sent First Nations to Residential Schools, refused them their own culture, confiscated all spiritually and culturally important things, initiated generations of alcoholism, diabetes and poverty... but they did it all after a warm welcome and they had their lives saved. The children of the very tribes that kept the new visitors alive through the first few winters were taken from their parents, forced to learn English, forced to accept the catholic faith, some were sexually molested and all were effected mentally. Not only all that, but they refused the people who had been living in this land for hundreds of years the right to have a voice in the governing of THEIR land.
The fact that First Nations didn't get voting rights in the first place is bad enough... but that it took so long is disgusting. It shouldn't have even taken any second though... it's rediculous. I'm personally embarrassed to live in a country where past govn'ts went as far as this. I understand our currect govn't had no direct involvment in these things...but even they took until just a couple years ago to admit they were idiots and apologize.
People say first nations are lucky, I've heard people say at work that it's unfair that First Nations get 'benefits' like cheaper schooling, and less taxes in some areas... and I just wish I could go back in time and DESTROY their culture, plant hundreds of years of dysfunctional families, give them a permanent stigma, force religion and culture on them and then walk up to them and tell them it's unfair that they save a few bucks on schooling. IT'S F**KING RETARDED!
BUUUUUUT...
We do have brilliant(ish) medical practices...
And at least we aren't africa or iran... (as far as freedoms/safety etc)
The North + West is absolutely beautiful
We've got the worlds best special forces
We hold various military world records
We aren't reeeaally in any wars
We're among the best places to live in the WORLD
So we've got all that going for us....
O'nus I love your new sig/avi combination! Very dapper! :D
Haha, I mainly just read the bottom of the post where he talked about his country having the best special forces. Fair play, I don't of any wars Canada is invovled in, which is more than can be said for my country unfortunately.
Politically I'm disgusted with the United States. I think something has seriously numbed the overall populace into letting the people in Washington to do whatever the hell they please. Whether Bush or Obama, it's all a load of bullshit.
Inversely If I turn off the television, walk outside here in Louisville, Kentucky and mingle among the "normal" people, then I rather like the United States. Stripped of the ridiculously biased media heads I see how blessed the people of this country are. We have freedom of speech, of religious choice, of where to live and what to do. I couldn't ask for much more in this life.
For now I'm proud to be American. That's to say nothing of what could come from our massive and ever expanding debt that might crush us sooner than we think. :)
I agree with Mind Wanderer about the Native Americans. I had to host a debate with the class once. It was about native rights and I was for them, one of my points was that the paper work for the land they sold was a paragraph in length. Takes more to get a box of crayons these days, probably more money too...
I'm an eighth Metis.
That is more a testament to how many unneeded laws we have, and how much the legal system is messed up today, than a poor reflection on them back then. If anything, shorter is far better. Nothing is hidden, its easy to read. Simple and to the point. If anything, if it was only paragraph, then they knew exactly what they were getting.
In a language they didn't understand...
"Your from the US? Not involved in any wars?"
-I'm canadian thanks... I even mentioned in there how the US granted Status First Nations the right to vote 40 years earlier than Canada.
I mentioned the free medicare, the beautiful NW, Worlds best Special Forces (that's right America, take that), the many, MANY world records we hold in the Military... just to mention one, we have the worlds furthest sniper kill... 2430 meters, over 1 and a half miles... the sniper had to adjust for gravity, wind, and CURVATURE OF THE EARTH... that's talent. Anyways, I also mentioned not Reeaally in any wars, and among the top places itw to live.
From that you shoulda figured Canada, or France... though France has week special forces...
edit: Grasshoppa, are you first nations? if you don't mind my asking...
Well i jus wanna say wut kinda question is that ? u a tearist?
definately a tearist! get em!
Nay, I came over in a boat. I do however feel sympathy for the first nations as a whole. Especially after doing a lot of research into it for that debate. It's sad how the owners of this land have been forced onto small bits of land and suffer from alcoholism and other problems.
yes it is...
I selected half-and-half, but it would probably be more accurate to select a simple "yes". However I'm not so sure it's good to be all that proud of your country at all times.
