      Dsm V

There was a topic a couple weeks ago about psychiatry. I think it was this forum, if not, this would still be good for discussion.

Basically the DSM V is coming out, they have a sort of draft up on this website about some of the changes. You can comment there if you register.
      http://www.dsm5.org/Pages/Default.aspx

It's already been flamed extensively for the stupidity of some of the 'conditions'. And it's expected that some of these (especially the childhood ones) will bring about new "epidemics" just as happened with ADHD and Bi-Polar disorder.

Here's some of the ridiculous ones if you are too lazy.
      Temper Dysregulation Disorder with Dysphoria
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Preschool Children (WHAT THE FUCK do pre-school children have to get PTSD from?)
      Oppositional Defiant Disorder (Just.... lol....)
Binge Eating Disorder (AKA, no willpower whatsoever)

Here's some criteria for adjustment disorder. Just to show the way these crackpots think....

. Marked distress that is in excess of what would be proportionate to the stressor, taking account of the external context and the cultural factors that might influence symptom severity and presentation.

      D. The symptoms do not represent normal bereavement.

Who are they to say what a proportionate reaction is supposed to be?
Who are they to say what a normal bereavement pattern/intensity is?
      People react differently, that's nature.

Another proposed change is that they have a severity category as well. So people can have non severe autism, which used to be Asperger's. Yeah, sorry guys, you have to call yourselves autistic now.

Further, people with depression can now just be slightly sad instead of heavily depressed. Even though the diagnosis is depressive disorder, they can just say that you're on the low end of this, and pump you full of the anti-depressants you wanted to so much, but will soon realise don't do shit.

Of course this has always been happening. They just say it's not a severe case. But now it's backed up by the DSM V which people take very seriously in America. Court cases have rested solely on a DSM IV classification.

I'm very nervous about the advent of this manual.

Yeah, I think giving behaviours a name and inducting them into the "disease/condition" hall of fame causes people to stop taking responsibility for their own damn situations and say "oh well it's not my fault, there's a condition named that."

Hell, if I went to a doctor, I could probably get diagnosed with ADD, but I think it's just a bullshit label for the most part, and sure enough, it hasn't affected my life in any way I couldn't work around.

I heard that one of the conditions in there is called "normal"

      Everyone has a personality disorder.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

If you are feeling nervous then you may have an anxiety or panick disorder of some kind, or evn bipolar, and you may need to be medicated. I suggest visiting a licensed pychologist or therapist.

Anyone can truly get diagnosed with something that comes with a prescription. Its easy, they base most of any diagnosis on what you say.

I was waiting for a response/diagnosis such as yours.

      Thank you.

It's true. And in fact, if you can't measure it physiologically like you measure temperature to determine someone is hyperthermic, then it's all in your head. I mean really, "add" or other conditions aren't something you have. They're something you DO.

Don't worry... there's something wrong with you? Let's just call it a disease or disorder so that you don't feel bad for being fat/lazy/unmotivated/agressive/compulsive/impulsive/weak willed/stupid/sad/awkward etc etc etc.

People don't like to admit that things wrong with them are their own fault, so we slap on a medical term and then you don't hate yourself as much.

There's a brilliant south park episode that tackles this issue, where Randy Marsh is an alcoholic and he goes to AA and they tell him it's out of his control, and it's a disease blah blah blah... it's a funny, but slightly unnerving episode... since it's mostly true.

What I'm trying to say is it's dumb... alcoholism isn't a disease, and neither are most of the 'diseases' or disorders out there.
