      Child Beauty Paegants

My younger sister loves the show Toddlers and Tiaras and watches it whenever it's on. I, on the other hand, despise the show for all it's worth, which doesn't happen to be much.

What's your take on the ethical angle of childhood beauty pageants?

Mine: the child doesn't get the money or the fame that comes with winning a pageant, the parent does, just so they have the status. Half the children are whining and bitching that they're tired during the make-up sessions, but their parents just keep going and reinforcing this bad behavior.

And the poor babies! They have no idea what's going on, just being dressed up like dolls. If their parents want to dress something up in makeup and in a fluffy dress, get a doll.

      My rant is done.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Bad parenting for sure. Some parents seem to think that their children are toys or poodles or some other less-than-human thing that they can dress up and show off. The parents in this show are probably very shallow and obsessed with exterior appearance, not a great trait to pass down to your kids.

Simple, the parents are just projecting what they wish they were on there children, the parents feel they should have been this way because society states that every woman must be pretty and every man must be strong, I feel bad for the kids because they will be used and objectified as toys the rest of there lives, if not by the parents then by there future boyfriends.

The saddest of all such cases is JonBenet Ramsey. I am pretty sure that poor little girl's mother made her do beauty pageants to get attention for herself (mother) and then was jealous as Hell when her daughter won a major beauty pageant and got so much individual attention, so the mother killed her. What a no way out situation for JonBenet to be in.

These pageants make me sick. All they are is a way for single, 40+ women to have a shot at the spotlight. I remember watching some documentary about child pageants and the mother wanted to get braces for her three year old. Yes, braces. I had braces when I was 13, and just got them out a few months ago, and they were hell. I cannot imagine subjecting a small child to them, just because the mother thinks that her daughter's teeth look ugly. I bet these things will ruin children's self-esteem for years.

What makes me angry is the make up they put on the kids, as if make up has no adverse effects on skin. Their skin will look 30 by the time they are 20. "Thanks mom!"

I hate child beauty pagents so much. They have absolutely no benefit to the little girls forced to participate in them. The parents have to be seriously screwed up to put their children through all that crap, rather than letting them just be kids.

Those kids creep me out. Little girls wearing more make up than street whores, they look like the bride of Chucky.

There ought to be laws against treating human beings like objects. Children are not trophies to be paraded around. And why can't social services intervene? Is not the act of compelling a child to compete for prizes and money for the sake of the parent like forced labour?

SouthPark made a crack at child beauty pageants in the episode "dead celebrities" and hinted (rather strongly!) that they provide material for pedophiles. The sexualization of prepubescent people will do that...

I have no opinion as I do not know the effects such beauty pageants have on young girls. From what I do know, some girls enjoy these pageants and want to participate.

So is this an American phenomenon? Because I've never heard of this before.

Well, if the kids are into it, then I see no problems.
But I can clearly imagine the situation, where the mother is treating her daughter like a trophy to dress up and to be their little gem they can boast about, regardless of what the kid wants.
I don't really know anything about it, but if that's the way most of those women are, then it's terrible :S

As for that, I don't find the excessive amount of make-up attractive ! Although, I've never actually watched an episode of that show. I just have some feeling that the show is created by lunatic mothers, for lunatic mothers.

Yeah I believe so. My sister and I were watching Little Miss Sunshine the other day and we were both like, 'wtf, this happens?'.

That's because the kids you see in Britain are ugly.

I don't understand how they keep getting more and more popular. The last one was so big they held it inside of one of the mother's sense of emptiness.

      1. dick measuring contest 64 up, 12 down

A conflict in which two parties (ususally male) are vehemently disputing something of limited relevance. Generally, both parties are somewhat wrong, but each refuses to be back down for fear of being thought the have the smaller of their two penises. Similar to a pissing match, but generally, the conflict involved involves a larger element of machismo, and continues on only because neither side wants to be seen as the one who backs down.
