      scared to try

I'm scared to try and join a school sports team. I feel like it's too late for me to try a sport at 13 because there are a bunch of kids who are already on the teams and way better than me, (that've probably been playing since like 7) and afriad I'll embarrass myself which I've done on a few occasions at school . but I really want to. I'm also not good at sports at all. I get beat at basketball games by my 10 year old sister.

Hey man, there's nothing wrong with trying out! Plenty of people don't make it on their first try, I promise. If there's something you want to do, you should do it!

Hey guys, I'm back. Feels good man

      Take up maths.

Your life is better suited in the nerdier field if you can't sport.

      Enjoy mathletics.

If you really want to, then there's your answer.

You're 13, so I'm guessing this is like early high school or maybe even before high school. It's a perfect time to get involved with sports. Practice a lot, and have fun while you practice. Try your best to associate playing basketball with fun instead of fear. It is challenging on both a physical and mental level, but the good feeling you'll get is damn well worth it! When you're bored, play and have fun. Practice your shots, practice your movements, practice your maneuvers. The same applies for any other sport. Invite a few friends and play with them, telling them you wanna get better.

Try to slowly get over "being embarrassed." I know in high school it can be a big deal. But notice this- the people who are the most charismatic, the most comfortable, and the most confident do have embarrassing situations. Take notice at how some of these guys in your school may act. It's whether or not they see situations as embarrassing and how they react to that situation that really impacts any other observer. If they give in to the idea that it is embarrassing and try to reject it, then it just confirms the insecurity in the eyes of everyone including himself. If, instead, they maybe make a couple of jokes (not too much), tease their friends and just play along without being uncomfortable (and without OVERLY making fun of yourself, which some people do), then it shows they can handle "tough" situations.

But you're not gonna grow physically and mentally if you don't try. When you finally graduate, do you wanna be the guy who overcame his fear and tried to do something he really wanted to do? Or the guy who sat back and let everyone else have all the fun?

You may still be scared as you first start off. But don't let your fear make decisions for you. If you feel it, that's okay. So long as you are doing what you truly want to do. Eventually, experience and fun will trump that fear.

PS. If you can get some friends to join in on this with you, it'll make it that much more awesome. If you can't, just go for it on your own all out. You'll make some more new friends along the way!

      Good luck!

I am almost 17 and I regret not doing sports in high school. I am convinced I could have been a good football player. Pain and embarrassment is better than loneliness and depression. I used "it's too late" as my excuse too. Now that I am a senior, it is truly too late. I haven't been around that long, but if there is one thing I am sure of it is that you NEVER should be "too scared to try". You never regret trying. Also, don't care what people think; it's overrated. Happy people are people that do things. Don't be a nerd and think you will be better prepared for life. You won't.

I am not sure if you will gain something from this or not. But it may help anyone on a similar boat, so I'll post it anyway.

I feel like very few people make or accept the realization you made. It may be "too late" for high school, but apply your new-found self-learned knowledge into what is here and now, and what is to come. Life's adventures don't end until they really end. The "first step" is seeing that life is an adventure. The next, is taking part in it. I learned this the hard way as well. But fortunately, I learned it

If you follow the college path, don't hold back. It gets insane (in a great way), and has the potential of outshining high school entirely. Balance out your academics. Some people believe you can either choose grades or fun. That's bull. I've seen friends who maintain 4.0 GPAs in the toughest majors (business, sciences, engineering, etc. etc.) while having the time of their lives. It's up to you to start making the decisions you truly wanna make.

I don't know where you are at with regards to your mindset and the way you view the world. But to me, the realization that you want to live your life the way you truly feel it should be lived is a step towards achieving that. I wanted to share this because this is a place I have been and experienced firsthand- it sucks when you let fear or your perception of "what others think" make the decisions for you.

You know, there came a point when I realized, any time I had put in pursuing sports at my high school was just a waste of time, because sports are never going to be anywhere remotely near as important as some of the other things I could be spending that time on. Some people...well, a lot of people, just aren't sports people. The idea is, you've got to find what you really enjoy, something you really want to get good at, and just do it. If you can't pursue it at your high school do the degree that you want to, find other outlets or pursue it on your own.

Nobody's saying that thing can't be a sport, either. Point is, it's completely up to you.

Oh, and, as a side note, please don't let yourself be fooled into giving two shits what anyone at your high school thinks about you. I'm sure it seems like a huge deal now; shit, at that age school is more than half your life. But pretty soon, very soon, high school will be over, and most of those people you'll likely never see again.

13, how is that too old. Doesn't your school have a more social team? If people realized how little others thought about them, they wouldn't care.

That is just so true, high school goes by so fast it's not even funny. It seems like just yesterday i was entering my first year of high school and now im in my third. And for the past two years i've let what other people thought about me influence what i did on a daily basis until i realized how wrong i was. So go for it and if at first you don't succeed, try again until you succeed because you can't lose as long as you don't give up. Just do your best to be happy and everything else will fall into place.

Go practice on your own for 2 hours every day, then by the time basketball season comes around you'll at least be able to make free throws better than most people.

You should also try out even if you don't do this. IF you try you'll at least know what you need to get good at in order to be on the team.
157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

dacher - This will be you.

You think you regret not starting earlier now.
When you're 17 you will REALLY regret not starting at 13.

When you're older, you'll regret even more that you didn't even try at all.

You don't know how good you could be. Unless you practice and practice.

I thought I sucked at piano, until I really found that I enjoyed it later on and I'm pretty damn good now.
In the last year even, I've improved dramatically.

I also thought I sucked at sport. I was 15 or so when I started soccer.
I was the best player on the team, eventually. The fittest too, because I trained and enjoyed it.

Do something you enjoy, and do it lots. That is really the fundamental advice.
If you don't have the motivation to do it lots, you probably don't enjoy it enough.
      So find something else.

Same, it is true when they say the years go faster and faster. If you think about it, every year you experience becomes a smaller and smaller percentage of your life.

What everyone saying about high school flying by and never seeing those people again is true. I just graduated myself. Unless you're really good friends with someone, you really won't hardly ever see them again (maybe if you're buying groceries or some shit and you're like oh hey I went to high school with you). I understood this when still in high school, but I don't think it truly sunk in until after I graduated (and it probably will more during and after college). Try out, there's no harm in that. It's really never too late to start, either, especially as a freshman or sophomore. Trust me, if you start now, you will catch up.
