      Gaining, weight easily.

I wonder, why it is easier for someone to gain weight than to lose weight. What happens to our body and metabolism? Or do you think, today's people just too wealthy?

The opposite is true for me, I have to spend the day stuffing myself just to keep my weight up otherwise it starts to quickly drop. =/

It is because you need food to live and exercise doesn't really help much. You eat two bags of Doritos you gain one pound. To lose that pound you would need to walk for 20 hours. Now what is easier, eating two bags of Doritos or walking 20 hours? The other choice is to not eat a single thing for a day and half straight. Or you could starve yourself for a day and walk for only 8 hours or something.

Lets spread it over a week though. To gain a pound a week, all you need to do is have an extra donut and a can of soda over the suggested amount for your body size. To lose a pound a week you need to walk 3 hours a day or you need to cut almost an entire meal out every day. A 3 hour walk everyday, or skipping breakfast everyday is a lot more extreme than having an extra donut or a can of soda. Now imagine if you have 3 or 4 cans of soda a day, then your doom. Then your walking hours every day and have to cut a meal out.

When you do the math, its a lot easier to have a little junk food, or sugary soda, than it is to cut entire meals out of your diet or spend every waking moment working out.

      I <3 my metabolism.

Though it's a lot easier if you just eat healthier food. It tastes miles better than those grease sponges you guys chew on anyway.

Alric covered it. It's difficult to eat healthily when I live with my parents who usually buy processed foods. When I'm hungry I stop caring about eating healthily and just want to eat whatever I'm craving most that's in the house. I think when I live on my own, I'll only keep healthy food in the house, and only go shopping when I'm full.

When I was little my metabolism was amazing. I assumed I just had a good one, but I guess that changed. I gained a small amount of weight on my stomach and thighs after going off of Adderal a few years ago, which I'm still trying to lose. It's not much, it can't even be seen through my clothing, but it's getting kind of irritating and I wish I could lose it.

Everyone has a higher metabolism when they are younger. Kids also run around a lot more than most adults probably do as well. Also its easy to not notice you are gaining weight, if you gain it slowly enough. And you might think your thin and in shape and one day wake up thinking maybe that isn't as true anymore.

Another thing to keep in mind is our bodies do want to pack on fat, if we take in calories we dont need our body WANTS to keep those extra calories in case there are later times that we need them. So our easier, sedentary lifestyle only promotes that.

I have to agree with GavinGill. I usually drop weight far too easily and have to eat more than I usually want or am comfortable with just to maintain it. However, I don't usually eat foods that are super-condensed with "nutrients." Candy bars, anything greasy, anything really but a home-cooked meal made with a variety of food groups and lots of filler foods is going to cause you go gain weight easily. Your body doesn't recognize when you have enough calories and tell you to stop eating, it recognizes when your stomach is actually full. So, give it a food that isn't the size of a twix with 300 calories per bar instead so you can actually feel full. The "you" in this situation of course is not meant to be the OP necessarily.

I think it just so happens to be that most people in developed countries have access to extremely high calorie, super-condensed foods and have little time to exercise. High calories plus no exercise equates to low metabolism. Best way to raise metabolism is to have high caloric intake coupled with exercise (low caloric intake and exercise results in your body eating your muscles instead because it needs energy quick, and fat isn't readily converted into glucose--though protein is). This all depends on what you call exercise though. It needs to be at least an hour to an hour and a half of some kind of cardio workout. If one is concerned with just losing weight, then don't lift weights (you'll probably start to gain weight after not too long, but still lose fat). Anything that makes you sweat and your heart rate raise for a steady period of time would do. It helps that exercising suppresses appetite as well. Basically everyone has jobs and lives with no time for working out, or even most of the time eating a healthy meal. This makes for overweight people.

Working outside all day has its perks. I was sure I'd have a way too high cholesterol but it turned out that it was actually very low. Love my metabolism, eat whatever I want and still stay fit. Actually have to eat a bit unhealthy to not drop in weight.

Evolution. We used to no be sure where our next meal would come from, so our bodies got really good at storing energy.

My height is 1.77m but I only weigh 54kg which makes me underweight by like 10kg. I have a very active metabolism but that doesn't explain why I can't put on even 1kg even after stuffing my face with all sorst of foods for an entire holiday. Must be a genetic thing.
