      Running Barefoot

"Our research asked how and why humans can and did run comfortably without modern running shoes. We tested and confirmed what many people knew already: that most experienced, habitually barefoot runners tend to avoid landing on the heel and instead land with a forefoot or midfoot strike. The bulk of our published research explores the collisional mechanics of different kinds of foot strikes. We show that most forefoot and some midfoot strikes (shod or barefoot) do not generate the sudden, large impact transients that occur when you heel strike (shod or barefoot). Consequently, runners who forefoot or midfoot strike do not need shoes with elevated cushioned heels to cope with these sudden, high transient forces that occur when you land on the ground. Therefore, barefoot and minimally shod people can run easily on the hardest surfaces in the world without discomfort from landing. If impact transient forces contribute to some forms of injury, then this style of running (shod or barefoot) might have some benefits, but that hypothesis remains to be tested."

Pesonally, I love it. I've been going barefoot for awhile but I know it can be seen as taboo (more out in the city/stores/public places)
      ...
      Talk about going barefoot.

Me and my friend used to go outside at 3 am (I live in the counrtyside) some days just to run barefeet along the road. It was exhilarating, the speed, the cold wind on your face, that feeling of slight numbness in your feet but still running smoothly like an animal. Something as simple as running barefoot has left a memory that I will never forget.

...And then you step on a chipped off bit of asphalt...

I prefer it too, except on roads with a lot of small stones in the summer.

It isn't that hard to see broken glass on the road. Most of the stuff you can step on isn't really going to hurt you either. I have lot of tiny hard rocks in my back yard. It hurts a little walking on them but it doesn't actually physically hurt you feet.

Feet are really sensitive, which is why there is a large gap between things that feel painful and things that actually hurt you. For example, stepping on a tiny hair like thorn does no harm to you at all. However you still feel it, and it will annoy you, and hurt every time you set your foot down.
