Relaxation for sleep:
+ Check and release tension from body, especially jaw
+ "Unfocus" (relax) eyes. For me this was the critical discovery.
+ Upon every exhale, tell myself I'm getting more and more relaxed, sinking deeper and farther away
+ If necessary, I imagine the top of my head pops open and all thoughts, tension, etc. flow out and down and away a stream running nearby.
+ Repeat the sinking "deeper and deeper" relaxing upon exhale until I fall asleep, (but without "trying" to fall asleep, just relaxing, floating).
Grab a book, lay in bed, and blast mine radio.
I like to meditate. Although my meditation sessions do not always go so well, I find that they always relax me at the very least. It is also a great way to be "in the moment". With practice meditation can become a very spiritual experience I think.
Workout with high intensity, smoke weed, eat, and sleep. This is a 4-part process that seems to yield me incredible results that leave me feeling renewed in the morning :)
But this is only if I'm not working a full-time job of much physical labor. Considering that my previous one was working in a warehouse full of computer server parts (I usually handled hard drives, which are p4p one of the heaviest computer parts)
I also like to meditate; even a few minutes can make a difference for me.
Having a great orgasm
Moderate exercise and then a shower is a favorite of mine. I've been known to dance around my bedroom to some Talking Heads when it is late at night, and I'm not tired.
Stomach breathing.
Relax face by assuming a dopey expression.
Masturbation
Smokin a doobie and journaling :-) self reflection is a necessity in my life
I have a big inhale and then a big and slow exhale. And drinking some whisky while sitting on my puffy couch.
One of my best ways to release and relax and hasn't been mentioned.
Taking a shit.
Qi-Gong breathing. And if casually, a cold ,sweet drink, next to a fan or cool breeze is nice.
The following doesn't aid me in sleeping or relaxing much:
hot showers
weed
orgasms/sex
exercise
cleaning
Those things seem to get me more energized than anything.
I get sleepy/relaxed by:
reading a long novel
watching something boring on tv
nature sounds mixed with light music
steady rain
candle-light
Strangely enough I can sleep after a cup of coffee (or three).
One of the most intriguing and relaxing methods I've ever come across also seems to stimulate lucid dreams and/or vivid dreams (as well as being a fantastic aid for physical, spiritual and mental health) is the following:
Lie down on your bed / sofa and find the most comfortable position. Take a few deep breaths and allow each body part to find its own most comfortable spot.
Starting at the head,....focus all of your attention on the top of your head. Picture (mind's eye) everything about that portion of your body....externally and internally. Keep your focus there gently for a minute or two while breathing comfortably. If your mind wanders to something else (like in meditation) do not "fight" it and force your concentration back to your head, but rather allow the thought to come and go naturally until your focus gently returns to the top of your head.
Slowly move your concentration and subsequent visualizations further down your body, allowing each body part your full (gentle) attention for a few moments:
forehead, face, ears, chin, neck, shoulders, both arms, upper chest, stomach, lower back, hips, genitals, thighs, knees, shins, both feet.
You can group whatever body parts together as a cluster in terms of what is comfortable to you.
If you make it to the bottom of your body, you may reverse the process and work "up" ending at the top of your head.
You may also (after completing your physical body) attempt to envision your soul and focus on that.
Very few people are able to go down and back up without falling asleep. ;)
Another thought is (if you're having trouble relaxing): you really should consider taking up "Yoga."
There are so many lessons to be learned and practiced in this ancient art in terms of stretching, breathing, finding your center and general relaxation techniques.
If taking up yoga, sounds like too daunting a process, ...you don't have the time - or the money. Ok.
Stand on your head for 5 minutes a day. I guarantee that it will tend to help you relax easily (result of blood flow alterations) and it will improve your overall health.
By the way; using a pillow (or two) and the wall (to support your feet) is NOT cheating. Most people need a little help at first.
This is VERY beneficial.
Best of health to you, namaste and focus on the control of your waking thoughts and feelings, for that is one of the most important lessons I have picked up from LDing. :)
Practicing on the violin, or trying taming the beast, however you want to call it is also relaxing. It makes me feel more down to earth, if you know what I mean. Movies video games, and porn have the opposite effect, they make you lose sense of who or what you are and you just midlessly crave for pleasure, especially games and porn. But practicing on the violin seems to do the opposite. It is not as obvious and direct as listening to music, for example, so it's a little different kind of relaxation. Because you do get mentally tired and after a few hours your willpower is totally drained, but I still think it is relaxing. It's hard to explain. It clarifies my mind, but so do listening to music and meditation, but it is different.
Here is a little more specific example of my relaxation:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuJUubvkDc8

I guess it's a compliment, but what exactly does it mean?
If someone told me I had to choose two recordings of music which I would have to listen to for the rest of my life and listen to nothing else except the 2 chosen recordings I would have absolutely no problem with the 2 recordings above.
I like yoga and meditation for the relaxation. I do yoga and meditation in my routine workout for getting better physical and mental relaxation. Both of these are amazing techniques for the physical and mental relaxation. Every person should try it in their routine workout.
Stretching and showers are good for physical relaxation. If I had a hot tub I'd probably use it all the time.
As far as relaxing for sleep I'm not picky but I like the right music and a cozy dimly lit room if possible. Tea is a nice bonus.
In the most stressful situations though I tend to prefer no light or sound if possible before bed. I even find myself seeking a quiet space sometimes when I'm particularly stressed earlier in the day, just for a few minutes where I can relax and breathe and recenter myself to avoid stress retention.
Music, a shower, and a nap.
It will definitely be therapeutic massage. It releases all my tension and relaxes my tired body. Much better with lavander oil or ginger oil.
Playing Pokemon. Don't judge..
Mine is walking at the park then drink Starbucks' Iced Macchiato :-)
Nature is pretty fuc...g relaxing !
Sitting in front of a fountain, and staring at all those beautiful, glittering coins. Absolutely intoxicating.
Drinking Jack Daniels on the rocks with a splash of water out in Nature while playing Pokemon outside a Starbucks in a park with a fountain with glittering coins...getting intoxicated, of course. :cackle:
Reading good books. Green Tea. Passionflower Tea.
I followed this and it's really relaxing.
My relaxing technique is to go out and eat my fave Japanese food.
meditation or yoga for me.
simply focusing on breathing works. u don't even have to do it deeply. that will happen naturally. let the desire of the body pull itself towards breathing a certain amount at certain speeds. it's called becoming the witness in spiritual practice, yes?
listening to music and yoga
lucid dreaming
deep breathing, meditation and yoga
Watching reruns of Stargate SG1, glass of bourbon in hand... the mind and body simply let go...
I set the back porch up with everything I could want. Candles. Incense. A pot or two of chamomile tea. Plants and crystals everywhere. Tibetan bowls playing in the background. Then I sit back, look at the swampy field behind the house, water birds grazing... and listen to my audiobook.. Ahhh.. it's so nice! :)
Other times, especially when the moon is nice and full, I enjoy sneaking out of the house. I find a nice spot to sit in the grass of the side yard or back yard, where no one can see me, and watch the stars while I listen to Pink Floyd.
