      Trying to get healthy

Alright, so about me. 15 years, not the most active, not the best at making right eating choices either...

Each day, I take a multi-vitamin, because I eat no veggies besides potatoes, and no fruits beside bananas. I need the help from the vitamins to get me my proper nutrients I'm missing.

Through my life, my parents haven't really encouraged health eating and proper exercising. So, that rubbing off on me, I barely do those.
At school, I am embarrassed to take off my shirt when we change for gym. On gym days I always wear an undershirt so that you can't see my stomach. My stomach isn't huge, but it isn't flat. I'm pretty sure I have a belly because I didn't have proper nutrition. I got my belly at a young age. And as I grew older, I always thought that when I grew taller, the fat would distribute itself evenly on my stomach.

So in the past year maybe, I have been trying to get healthier. But, I lost interest, and motivation.

      Now, I want to change.

I want to become healthier, and this is where I need your help. I don't know much about health related things, like what to eat and why, and proper dieting, and right and wrongs in exercising.

Starting tomorrow, because I am not feeling well today, I am going to try to get at least 30 minutes of cardio each day. Is this a good starting point?
All your help is greatly appreciated, and I would be so grateful for any help I can get!

Cardio + A good weight training regiment will melt any unwanted weight away very quickly.

As for diet, it's pretty basic. Anything that is high in protein, fiber, and other nutrients while low in sodium, fat, and sugar is good. You just have to discipline yourself to avoid junk foods.

What kind of weight training would you recommend? And is 30 minutes a day for cardio good? To start with at least.

Just got to a gym, start with squats, bench press and some back exercise. A great way to learn to ask people about their routine, most people wouldn't mind helping you out. If you're too shy just watch people in between your sets. Everyone has a different routine, just take the best of it plus the basics and you'll have a nice routine of your own.

30 mins of cardio is great. Maybe even too much for just starting. But if you can handle it then go for it.

Start by taking a 30 minute walk each day.

It's free, and you get the exercise and the fresh air.

EDIT: And if you have a dog, take it along to give it some exercise too.

Oh, I'd love to take my dog! But, he isn't trained for walking, and he's huge.

Lets do the math, HUGE Dog + Not trained + He loves to run = Me doing a faceplant

Well, you can spend some time working on that. If you have a back yard, practice walking him on a leash. Make sure you have his attention while doing so. If you don't have a backyard, then take him just outside your front door, but have some form of reward (treats, if he/she is food-motivated) and work on walking short distances and making sure you have his/her attention. If it helps, see if there's someone who can control the dog who will practice training him/her with you. If the dog is older, it may take more time, but it's not impossible. Nearly any dog is trainable if the owner is willing to be patient.

There's numerous resources on how to go about training your dog and while it could be frustrating, it would be a great thing to be able to take him/her with you when you go for a walk.

Eat more fruit and veg. Drink less alcohol if you drink at all. Minimize the junk food.

I lost 20 pounds in the last 3 months doing that, and I wasn't even trying to lose weight.

I used to hate eating fruits and vegetables, but I found if I knew what nutrients something had, that I would be more likely to want to eat a piece of fruit or something. Like if I know I'm eating something that provides you with a vitamin that helps combat wrinkles, or a vegetable that helps fight cancer, I'll eat that food even if I don't think it tastes all that great. Then over time, I just got used to those foods and now they're part of my regular diet.

This is a great website to learn about nutrition and which foods do what for you. There's SO much information:

Alright, so I haven't began exercising yet, seeing as I am still sick, and it sucks. Hopefully I can start doing something tomorrow, or Monday.

So I still need a weight routine. Anyone got any?

Hope you're alot better by now.

I workout 6 days a week and leave one day to rest. Unfortunately the only things I have to use as weights are these small dumbells which are pretty much useless ATM lol. Gotta save up to buy heavier ones.

Make sure you stretch for at least a good 15 minutes before and after working out. If you can, make it 30 minutes. Don't take short cuts with stretching - trust me I learnt that the hard way lol.

Fit in 30 min of cardio just after the warm up stretches. (You may do less at the beginning so your body can get use to it and slowly ease into the routine).

You gotta take turns in working out different areas of your body on different days. For example, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays you can work on your arms (bicep curls etc) and chest (pushups). And then on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays you can work on your tummy (crunches, situps etc) and thighs (squats). And every 3rd day, you can work on your back or something like that. It is important to rotate your workout so your body may rest and recover. It is not healthy for you to workout everything, every day, 7 days a week.

With area specific workouts, do them in sets. Since you're just starting off, you can do like 3 sets of 7 bicep curls (or whatever the exercise). Once you get use to that, up it to 3 sets of 10, then 3 sets of 15 etc. You may take like 1-3 minutes break between each set.

Drink at least one glass of room temp water 1 hour prior to working out. (Cold water passes through the body faster - makes you go pee pee lol). For muscle development, you'll need lots of protein. You get that from eating meat or protein shakes.

Hope this helps and good luck~!

Just a quick question. When you say you have "a stomach" is that you carry a large amount if excess bodyfat, is your stomach flabby, to you hav a chubby face? Or is it more of a bloat? As in in general your not fat, you just have a bloated, rounded stomach. The the answer is the latter, bodyfat probably isnt the main problem, the problem is a Carbohydrate intolerance, and just far toom nay simple carbs. This a problem that affects a huge number of people in the US, Canada and Britain; since we have in recent years adopted the North American diet.
What you need to do, assuming this is the case, is stop eating so much processed shit, vastly increase your intake of protein, mainly through chicken, tuna, turkey, and don be afraid to chuck in a steak everynow and then, also eggs are good, if your worried about cholesterol then just eat egg whites. Your sources oif carbs shoukd come from complex carbs, wholewheat/wholemeal bread, wholewheat pasta, sweet potatoes, you can look up other sources of complex carbs.
You also need to drastically increase your intake of water, and include a larger amount of vegetables in your diet.
