Is Dreamviews.com a legitimate way to interperate dreams?

Dreamviews.com is a community, but functions mostly as a database and dream dictionary, telling of what happenings in non-lucid dreams and what they represent. For instance, they'll say something like; The color green represents healthy growth, seeing green in your dream could represent being ready for healthy growth, as if to say "go ahead" and make a progressive decision.

They're also really specific too - they'll decide what certain objects and types of people in your dreams mean. If I remember a dream well enough, I can write down all of the meanings and draw some kind of conclusion on what the dream was about, but would that just be a comfort thing or is it actually a good way to find out what your dream meant?

In my opinion there is no legitimate way for someone else to interpret your dream, I think that only the dreamer can do that for themselves. You're dreams are not signs from the heavens or spiritual encounters. They are a product from the mind, built from years of personal experience. What might mean something to someone could mean something totally different for somebody else. I'll give you an example, I just grabbed this from a dream interpretation site:

"To dream of a pie represents that there will be some reward for your efforts. It also shows that you may be stretching yourself beyond your abilities. On the other hand, it may be a metaphor for getting your fair share as in 'piece of the pie."

It's very ambiguous and is mostly based on western ideals (eg. the "a piece of the pie" example). In reality the dreamer may have been dreaming about pie because their grandma-who always made pie-recently passed away.

Dreamviews members might be better interpreters than many because a lot of us have a good understanding of the general rules of dreams. In other words if you ask what the meaning is behind you're "dream-within-a-dream" we'll set you straight ;)

This site isn't an interpretation site it's a how to lucid dream site.

Haha that's kind of a coincidence. That's where I got the interpretation of dreaming about pie! So verdict remains the same, no it is likely not accurate at all, dreams can mean different things for different people. And remember, the majority of dreams likely have no meaning at all.

Every person is unique, with their own experiences, fears, preferences, attitudes, perspectives, etc.
Dreams which are created based on such individuality is personal and should interpreted by the individual.
For example, someone who has a nightmare of spiders may represent fear, whereas someone who loves spiders may not see it as so.
Anyway, I don't believe any website, nor "dream dictionary" is at all accurate.

There are still many people who fear spiders, many people who are simply irritated by spiders, and even many people who like the violence of spiders. How much variance can the typical individual's experiences of spiders have from everyone else's?


However, there doesn't seem to be any particular person who takes credit for the work on dreammoods. It's free though.

What exactly is a "legitimate way"? Perhaps DV is not the best place, the interpretation sub-forum lets anyone claim anything about your dreams. If there is a more standardized way out there it certainly doesn't exist here.

The problem is that different things mean different things to different people. Only a highly trained psychologist, who know's you very well could even start to make a vague interpretation of your dreams. We aren't psychologists (most of us, there are a few) and we certainly haven't spent sessions with you to find out how you associated things. Your dreams work in metaphors a lot, which are vague associations of things. Try a word association game with some friends, I promise no one will give the same results as you, it's the same for dreams. That's why it's not feasible to have a database of "a rabbit means this", "a lake means this"...

I know that. Dreammoods sometimes gives multiple ideas. I think that reflects that not everyone thinks the same. Most people share similar, though not identical, experiences. For some people, one common type of experience may predominate another but there aren't many people who will say anything as remote as, "When I think of spiders, I think of plastic wrap and the sky."

So far, I think that a theme will repeat through multiple symbols and as a result, the theme is a little more clear. Maybe dreammoods is better for seeing the themes although it's not good for specifics. Maybe there is no dream-symbol dictionary that is good with specifics.

Maybe only the dreamer can know what part of their life the dream is related to though.
