The more tired you are/the longer you've been awake, the deeper the sleep you fall in to.
Therefore - if you've slept for 9 hours and then sleep for another cycle, it's likely to be full of REM. If you've been awake for about 6 hours and have an afternoon nap, you should get a good bout of REM. The closer you get to the evening, i.e. the longer you've been awake for, the deeper the sleep and the less REM you'll get. By the time you've been up 14-18 hours and head to bed, you're going to be tired, and should end up straight in deep sleep.
