      Premonition-like Dream - Question

So, around noon today, when we were driving to a fossil dig site to find some fishies, I suddenly remembered what may have been a dream:

I was in the car with my brothers and dad, and we were turning onto a portion of road that has been closed until this day of our vacation here in Utah. We drove up the hilly road, over a mountain. I remember it being fairly steep, and winding and there was a rock wall on our right, and a ledge with a few small trees to our left. I remembered the curvature of the road and the imagery very vividly...

Which is what made me ask, in the car today, "Did we take N. O. Pass yet or did I dream that...?"
      "You dreamt it, Kestrel."
      "Oh."

Later today, we drove on the road, going the other direction. Even going the opposite way, I could tell... it was basically exactly as it had been in my dream. A few curves were slightly different, but the steepness and the landmarks were exactly the same.

I have never been on this road. It's been closed the whole time we were here, until today. This was such a surreal experience for me, and I had to RC a few times in the car because it was the same as my dream. My mom was also in the car IRL but not in the dream, but that was the only other difference.

Has this ever happened to anyone else, and if so, what was it like? Does it mean anything? Or was my brain just tricking itself into thinking it was the same? I would be more skeptical if I had only remembered the dream when I was on the road, but I remembered and vividly remembered seeing it before I ever got to see it in the waking world...

I have had a dream one time that our water heat broke and me and my dad had to fix it, 3 days later in real life our water heater broke, except we just had a guy come over and fix it. It was quite a strange dream. I also had a precognitive dream that it would snow and then it did that day, which I was impressed at.

Sometimes I think our subconcious minds have a way of processing much more information than our concious minds, and it might be shown to us through our dreams. Very interesting story though.

Could it have just been deja-vu? As in, you didn't actually dream it at some time in the past, you sort of flash-dreamed it right then and there, and it came to you as "maybe something you dreamed"?

No, I remembered driving on the road as soon as I woke up, but didn't really realize it was a dream, I just assumed we had done it the night before. I remembered it again in the car (at least five hours before we actually took the road), which is when I asked about it.

Huh. Ok then, I got nuttin. The only thing I can think of, and this is probably way off the mark, is that often I think Deja-Vu is a sort of glitch in the mind where you just get that feeling that "OMG!! I've seen this before somewhere, and it was EXACTLY LIKE THIS!!!", and for a while your mind keeps that feeling and keeps manufacturing the sensation of a false memory or dream to account for it. Conscious awareness of something takes a little while to manifest - your unconscious is instantly aware of everything, but it takes a few microseconds to filter out all the static and the stuff you don't need to focus on, so by the time you become consciously aware of something it's already old news to your unconscious. I think Deja-Vu is just a temporary malfunction of this, in which somehow you get impressions direct from the unconscious immediately, and then when the conscious gets them they feel familiar, and your mind cooks up a rationalization that it must be an old memory that you just can't place right now or a dream or something. You know how weird the mind is - it has all these little quirks and foibles, and it refuses to accept what's happening sometimes, like when dream characters assure you you're not dreaming while you're lucid. For some reason the mind is very secretive and wants to keep its inner workings secret from the conscious.

That's an interesting way to see déjàvu! I've never thought of it that way. And I would tend to doubt myself as well, except that I had a pretty clear image of it hours before we actually drove on it, and kept that image for comparison just before and while we were driving on it... The mind works in mysterious ways.

Yeah, I was even thinking as I wrote that, there have been times when I've had deja-vu (sorry, don't know how to do all the fancy letters!) and I wouldn't have accepted the response I gave above for it.
