      Clothes in dreams?

So I was browsing through dream journals and noticed that clothes are rarely mentioned in journals, especially one's own clothing. This was interesting to me, and I figured many people find clothing an unimportant or uninteresting detail to record.

However, recently I talked to some family members and looked through some old threads here on dream views and I realized that a lot of people don't notice clothing at all when they are dreaming. The exception seems to be the media-popularized "in my underwear at school" type dreams that I don't believe are near as common as they are made out to be. Is not noticing clothing more normal? More often than not I know exactly what clothes I have on when I am in a dream. Not always in lengthy detail, but I remember the general look/feel of the clothes. Even if I don't remember consciously thinking about my clothing, I think about my dream afterward and I generally can remember what I was wearing. Am I weird? (maybe unique or extraordinary are better words ).

Do you remember your clothes in your dreams? Are they only noticeable when they are important to the dream? I'm really curious to find more people like me, especially, but I want to know about other people's experiences, too. Why do you think clothing is the way it is in your dreams?

I rarely remember the clothing I wear in my dreams—the exceptions being dreams where I happen to look in a mirror, lucid dreams where I’ve made a point of checking and dreams where what I’m wearing - or, as the case may be, not wearing - is important.

From what I’ve read in other people’s dream journals, this is pretty typical. You are indeed the exception. My first guess would be that you’re more conscious of what you’re wearing than most people, and that’s carrying over to your dreams. For most people, what they’re wearing is something that, in waking life, just fades into the background until it’s called to their attention, but not for you.

It’s also possible that your memory of dream details in general is better than average—would you say that’s the case? Or, possibly, that dreamers are remembering but just not bothering to write it down except when it’s important. I guess you’ll see from the responses you get here.

Also, I’m with you on “in my underwear at school” dreams, although I think that the fact that media attention has made it into a recognizable type of dream, and a culturally recognized symbol for embarrassment and vulnerability, has probably resulted in its happening more than it otherwise might have. (I say that, but I had one only two days ago—although that would have to be “half-naked at the airport,” to be precise. And my reaction was more along the lines of “Well, I seem to be getting away with it so far…”)

      hello

i have number of dreams i can recall what i wear in them , i remember them more often and more vivid in lucid dreams than non lucid dreams, and i can control what i wear in the lucid dream i snap and i can change what im wearing from shoes or hats or all what i wear , and i every dream i have different cloths.

some dreams i have sports and some from anime or even books i read and had a dream about being in the book for example i had cloths from the main character from mist born hero , full black old cloths from the middle ages .

i think working in fashion and being guide for men clothing , and working in a clothing store is the reason behind it .

but i dont write what i wear but from now on i will.

Usually in the dreams where I am another person I remember clothes.

I'm not sure what the best outfit has been, I'm torn between the weirdly pastel-colored plaid kilts that show up in many dreams, or the hot pink landsknecht outfit.

Alright, I'll admit this is probably true, haha. I don't think I am super into clothes like some people are, but they are important to me.

Hmmmm. Well, for most senses I would consider myself average or below average in observing, but I am very conscious of the way something feels in a dream, both physically and emotionally. That very well could be a contributing factor.

Nice, I thought there might be someone similar to me! I am also more likely to remember/change clothes in a lucid dream, even though I usually remember in normal dreams as well. Usually in my case the clothes are pretty normal, everyday stuff, but I have also had the experience of wearing clothes based on whatever fantasy environment I am in, such as a cartoon or game world I find myself in on occasion.

Wow that is awesome . Sounds like you have some multicultural dreams! I have had dreams where I am different people too. In what was probably the weirdest sensation ever I once had a dream where I was two people at the same time.

I also don't typically pay attention to clothing in dreams, and I think it's because I don't in waking life, either. I consider it a fairly mundane thing, and like other mundane, everyday waking life factors I don't pay much attention to, they therefore don't often play a role in my dreams. In fact, if you were to randomly catch me during the day and have me say what color clothes I'm wearing without looking, I probably wouldn't be able to tell you! That's how little attention I usually pay to it.

There have been a few occasions in lucid dreams where I happened to decide to check what I'm wearing as an experiment (or happen to discover I wasn't wearing anything at all), but these are fairly uncommon cases.

Fair enough! When you check what you're wearing as an experiment, are you actually curious of what clothes you have on, or is it more for dream stabilization/awareness?

It was curiosity. I've only done it a couple of times, so it's hard to find in my dream journal. In one lucid dream, I checked them every so often just to find out if they would ever spontaneously change during the dream (they didn't that time). I think there may have been a time I checked them to try to find out if they were the same clothes I had been wearing in waking life, but I can't remember the result (I think I either couldn't remember, or I had a false memory that caused me to come to the wrong conclusion).
