A google search for those two factors will bring up some studies you can read, I'm sure, but you will need more specific terms than "psychological distress". For example, there are studies done for women who experienced violence, or people with PTSD.
That said, I am under the impression that everyone has recurring dreams, or at least, recurring dream themes.
My recurring dreams have allowed me to view my own psychological distress from a new perspective and have given me some tools to heal. Actually, though my recurring dream themes, I have been able to see my healthier state.
