What are your Nightmares MADE OF?

Out of curiosity, post and talk about what typically happens in your nightmares.

I rarely have them, but the nightmare I went through last night inspired me to want to know about what other people experience.

Uncomfortable dreams aren't that uncommon for me, but I definitely wouldn't consider them to be on the same level. The main substance in the dreams I would truly consider to be a nightmare are devils. Sometimes giant, towering creatures, sometimes human sized. But they are always completely red, have the legs of a goat, and have long, wicked horns and an evil expression on their face. They appear only to kill as many people as they possibly can, especially me. They are ruthlessly efficient, and I'm not sure if I'm ready to take one on if I ever become lucid and have the chance to conquer the nightmare.

I apologize if this is an uncomfortable topic.

What about you guys? What are your nightmares made of?

I'm glad you posted this thread. I read it yesterday, and at the time all I could remember was a dream I had once of sitting in a pitch black room at a table, thinking I was alone, when suddenly a hand was laid on mine, of somebody sitting across from me in the darkness. Suddenly I could see him and it was the devil or a demon, just as you describe, red with horns etc. I couldn't see below the table, but I'll bet he had the goat legs and pointed tail too. It woke me up in terror.

I had been asking my subconscious to show me shadow figures, and I think this was the ultimate one. At the time I didn't connect this up, but thanks to your thread I remembered I used to have a black light poster when I was a kid of a devil or demon, very cartoonishly drawn but still looking really wicked. It had the full regalia - red, hairy goat legs, but the rest of the body covered with scales, and horns. And here's the kicker - I used to sort of project evil onto that poster! Any time anything bad happened to me I used to think it was the poster's fault. I guess that's a very primitive projection, a symbol or figure to represent evil or bad juju, and when bad things are happening to you you can do something to the figure.

What I ended up doing was tearing it to pieces, and I don't remember but it seems like I might have done more nasty things to defile it too, like maybe burn it or something. In fact it's coming back to me - I think even before I tore it up I would sometimes scribble on it with markers or poke holes in it, to show my contempt for it after something bad happened to me. I guess I was trying to turn the evil back onto it or something. Wow, no wonder my subconscious dreamed up an evil red demon as my ultimate shadow figure!! I wish I had gone lucid in that dream - I would have done something like merge with it or shake its hand and tell it I love it and welcome it or something (I think - but I don't know, it was really terrifying).

I've also had a lot of nightmares with giant gorillas. I have issues with my back and sometimes I have back spasms that constrict the muscles of my torso really tight, and I have trouble breathing. Whenever I was having a giant gorilla dream and he would hold me in his hand like King Kong and start crushing my chest, I would wake up having a back spasm.

Plus there's an old Japanese movie, similar to the Godzilla type movies, called War of the Gargantuas, with 2 giant monsters that looked a lot like gorillas, but one was brown and the other green. I dreamed of them once. My house was split open right above my bed where I was laying, and I could look up and see sky through the crack, and suddenly the brown Gargantua loomed over the house and reached down inside and picked me up. He went running out into the woods behind the house with me, and the green one showed up and fought him. I think that was a back spasm dream - in fact I'm sure it was. I have it in my DJ here as a Darkmatters Dream Classic or whatever I called them, when I would write up my old dreams that I still remembered.

Aside from that my nightmare characters will frequently be bears or big attack-type dogs, although I stopped having dreams with those particular nightmare creatures a while ago, and in fact if they show up now they're helpers. I believe that's because I confronted some of my fears and conquered them. Obviously I still have more fears to conquer, and maybe then things like demons and devils won't scare me so bad.

      The Shadow Knows!!
Most of the nightmares that I've had are of people with human faces that I know. Some of them are people that I know from school.
If you ever been stalked or been in a situation where it was bad in real life then you would know what it does to you, physically and psychologically.

Occasionally, I would have a nightmare with magic or supernatural in them. I have beaten the Demons or the Devil before. At least once, The slender man showed up but, I have an idea what was causing it.

I've been accused of being a witch tortured, and even been the cursed one in a dream before.

I mustered up the courage last night to ask my subconscious to let me face the devil again. I've beaten my nightmares when I was a kid, so I knew it was possible for me. I ended up dreaming of sea horses and sunshine that was so bright it would burn you if you stayed in it for too long. My dreams usually interpret well, but this one has me baffled.

Quite possibly he represents your deepest and darkest fears, and to confront him directly might be more than you can handle.

Just noticed you said you confronted them successfully as a kid. Maybe you've picked up some new fears since then? Just conjecturing.

Or maybe you didn't really want to confront it? As in, what you said and what you really feel are 2 different things?

Heh, everything you said is most likely correct. I'm sure I absolutely picked up a few or more fears. And I was very hesitant to ask to confront it. I knew I didn't really want to, but I figured it was worth a shot even if I failed. At least I would have a little more insight in regards to what exactly it was I would be facing.

I'm not sure what you guys think of dream interpretation; I see it as my subconscious manifesting buried emotions of all kinds. Stuff I don't consciously acknowledge (or at least not often). The main resource I use for interpretation is Dreammoods and it has seemed accurate most of the time. The symbols in last night's dream, sea horses, sunshine, (and also what I didn't mention) sunscreen, islands and a restaurant, could translate roughly to this: My subconscious has power to bring ease and an escape from the stress in my life. The sunshine could interpret to some kind of emotional breakthrough, but the fact that it burned makes me think otherwise.

It goes deeper, but I feel I would want to move this to the dream interpretation part of DV. I'm not too interested in picking it apart, I just felt like it was my subconscious' retort for the nightmare the other night in some way. I'm not sure. I'm low key glad I didn't see a devil, though so that was nice!

I beat the devil and some of the agent of Lucifer when I was little with mostly with some Lucid dreaming spells. I remember that it was more like saving a Dream Character from the demon kind of dream rather than for my self. I performed some a binding/ hex removal spell from this old book, and the devil didn't show his face again. The DC was cursed in the dream. However, I've dealt with much worst in a nightmare and survived.
The devil will bother you if you let him and it wears many faces.
You know, some of the Tasks Of The Years that I've completed here, I've played the role in the dream as Mephistopheles, an agent of Lucifer or I've even visited the Greek Underworld in a dream. So, it's not like I'm that innocent.

Well that sounds like it fits right into this thread - you brought it up, now you need to follow through and tell us about it.

Well..if i saw tim curry in a dream (with or without makeup) it would probably scare the shit out of me. Actually i think not knowing what comes next is part of the problem. In dreams everyone's perception of fear is different. A bouquet of flowers could appear terrifying.

      Which makeup?

My current idea concerning the devil is that he really has no power aside from temptation. I've come to believe this over a period of years. All he is is that inner voice tempting you to do things you know are wrong. If you give in then he has all kinds of power, in fact your soul belongs to him, so he has the power of a god. But if you stay strong, and aren't taken in by his tricks (which would only happen if you secretly want to be taken in - if you're trapped in ego, because fear is only of the ego) then he can only slink away with his head down and his tail between his legs.

But do I really believe that? I 'believed' it when I had my devil dream, and yet I was utterly terrified of him, because I think what he really represented were all my deepest fears. Of course those are all illusory, but it takes a long time and a lot of training (convincing?) to be able to just drop them. I feel like I'm pretty well along that road and moving forward on it. And at some point I'll suddenly understand that the idea of moving forward on a road is also illusion, you can drop it at any time if you make the right realizations and accept them completely. Not quite there yet though.

Oh yeah no pressure, Dark Matters. What do you want me to do awake the evil within me? Most of my dreams are personal. I'm not sure if talking about it here is a great idea.
However, if there's one thing I know, you can't always control your subconscious in dreams all the time.
You can lock up bad memories, you can burn it. Bury it and pray that it dies but, it never will. It just rests awhile. I suppose that can't always make a nightmare disappear just like that. You can lock your doors in your dream, and say your prayers at night but, a nightmare is out there, waiting. And maybe, just maybe, it's closer than you think. You have a lot of work to do because if you suppress a bad dream, it will take a different form.

My bad - the fact that you mentioned it here made me think you'd be ok talking about it, but I understand, a lot of dreams are really personal.

I agree, repression in all its forms isn't effective. It's like playing Whack-a-Mole, push it down here and it just pops up somewhere else.

I also agree, just saying your prayers and going to church on Sundays isn't enough either. 2 ways I know of to change your subconscious and rid yourself of bad dreams:

      1) Start facing some of your fears in waking life. I did it a few years ago - for one I got over my fears of chainsaws, got myself one, and cut up a big tree that fell in my back yard. Then I had to use an axe to split the logs into firewood. I faced several other fears at the same time mostly through Stoicism, and as I mentioned above, bears and attack dogs stopped being monsters in my dreams and often show up now as helpers.

      2) Spiritual Awakening. I mean the real thing - not mainstream religion which doesn't aim for inner transformation. It needs to be derived from the ancient esoteric traditions such as Buddhism or Early Christianity or certain of the lesser-known traditions that are devoted to destroying the ego (the small self, the personality) and awakening the higher self (what C G Jung called the Archetype of Wholeness or the Self). This has been the main topic on my Jung thread for a few weeks now, and was discussed earlier on it as well in conjunction with Jung's Individuation, which is his own term for spiritual awakening. This post does a pretty good job of explaining it, at least in part: Preparing for the Journey. In fact the video posted in it explains how facing fears affects you so your dreams will change. Or just hit up YouTube and search for Spiritual Awakening - you can find all kinds of videos about it. It's difficult and requires changing your lifestyle - anything really transformative will be hard and require you to change the way you're currently living. But it causes what's known as the ego death, the disintegration of your self-centered and petty ego, home of fear and all the negative emotions that are causing nightmares and bad dreams.

Nice collection!!! I watched (downloaded) legend about two weeks ago. I somehow got version without tangerine dream soundtrack. After one hour..i couldnt handle it. It was like all the magic evaporated from everything (i dont know..could be a personal preference).

Oh man, I love Ridley Scott's early films - Alien, Bladerunner, Gladiator (not an early one really, but still great). But somehow Legend never really grabbed me the same way. I know he always had the heavy atmospheric elements, like flashing lights, dripping water, steam smoke and mist etc, but all that stuff floating around in the air in Legend (puffball stuff or whatever it was) made me feel like I was gonna choke. Not to knock a film you like - we all have different tastes, but I totally get what you mean about the music - that can make a massive difference. Trying to imagine Bladerunner for instance without the Vangelis sound track, it just wouldn't be the same movie at all!

You call me, here I am.

I wonder why everyone around here is so afraid of "stalkers", is this some kind of america national tradition or something??? What exactly these 'stalkers' mean for you???

Though I was chased more than twice in my university days by murders and thieves in the dark winter evenings, when I was going back from lectures. I started to have a lot of "chasing" nightmares with no-face or masked people. The feeling to run for your life along the dark streets, chased by some drugged psycho with a knife that was laughing at me the whole time is 'awe inspiring' in a worst way possible!

About my nightmares, because my imagination is very developed, I had a lot of nightmares when I was younger. Most of them were about: living dead(they are different from zombies), monsters, dogs, alien invasion, shadow people, demons, the alien(from alien movie), end of the world type, large spiders, cyclops. They were very realistic and I have something like adrenaline rush every time. More recent nightmares are more psychological in nature, especially the lucid one, but in the recent year I have stopped having them after a certain event. I started to use power the of my imagination when in nightmarish situation to enhance my self. So now if I feel scared in a dream, I start to fight fire with fire. Like in one of my recent dream, when I was attacked by a dark monster, I gone berserk and morph myself in vicious creature and let the battle begin

I can try to to write some of my more recent nightmares, if somebody is interested.

p.s. don't let me get under your skin, because you gonna regret it

Not everyone, it's mostly females (probably entirely females), and I doubt you've ever been one.

I also suspect it's females who have actually been stalked IRL, which would be a terrifying thing. Most guys getting followed get their dander up and get ready for a fight, but it's different for females - in general they lack the upper body strength to effectively fight a man (and the ones who do have it probably never get stalked!)

So the enchanted forest was making you nauseous? (just kidding) those movies you mentioned were legendary and like thirty-forty years ago, if go to a ridley scott or john carpenter movie..you know what your getting. I dont see too many cool sci fi directors\movies nowadays (though i like guillermo del toro).

Agreed, though if you go to a recent Ridley Scott movie it just isn't the same AT ALL.

Dark Matters: Even watching and reading all those biopics about the serial killers, like you know, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, a real-life killer clown who murdered 33 people during his six-year reign of terror, Andrew Phillip Cunanan, Yolanda Saldívar, Rebecca Schaeffer's STALKER killer Robert John Bardo, and everything, pale in comparison from what this nightmare. Hell, I've got to the point where I can record and analysis of a DC's psychological and behavioral characteristics. So, as to assess or predict their capabilities in a certain sphere or to assist in identifying a particular subgroup of people. But, I know what you mean.

Yeah I'm not a stalker, but I really wish to become a real s.t.a.l.k.e.r

This has been the main topic on my Jung thread for a few weeks now, and was discussed earlier on it as well in conjunction with Jung's Individuation, which is his own term for spiritual awakening. This post does a pretty good job of explaining it, at least in part: Preparing for the Journey. In fact the video posted in it explains how facing fears affects you so your dreams will change.
Lol I was a fan of the series but, I totally had forgotten about this episode.

Lol I see that you are afraid of Devils/Demons, but why really, if you not believe in God, then devils and demons doesn't exist?

I had a lucid dream about the devil/demon. I was performing a WILD and I got a falling sensation, so I open my eyes. I was falling through the different layers of the earth and suddenly fell on my butt(lol i still feel the pain in my butt) on a hard floor. I look around, it was dark only illuminating by torches. I stay still and let my eyes adjust of the lower light. It looked like a corridor, but it was more like a dungeon. I start walking, I walked and walked at least a 500m. It was becoming creepy by the second, suddenly I reached a giant circle hall without ceiling, it was very steamy, I was hardly able to see anything, I was only hearing splashing and roaring sound from the middle of the hall. I proceed with caution, in first moment I wasn't aware at what I'm looking at, but when the thing moved I saw him in his full glory. It was really big(around 15m long), it was red with big black horns and white beard, it has sharp very white teeth and a long tail.... and it was naked. It seems it was taking a bath, a bath full of blood. It seems it has noticed me and start to turn his enormous body in my direction.

The devil -Who are you? How you get here?
-I have no idea, I just fell here. What exactly you are.
      He was grinning at me.

The devil -I'm sure you know who and what exactly I am!
-I think I must go home, it starting to get late. BTW do you know where the exit is.
He looked at me and start to laugh very hard. The whole hall started to shake.

The devil -There is no escape from my Domain, your bones are gonna rot in here for an eternity my little fellow.
-Ha haha OK, it's time for me to go, I do not want to overdo it with your hospitality.
If there is a entry there must be a exit too.(I was thinking) I chose the first corridor I saw and run away.

The devil -Run as much as you want, but your destiny it's carved in stone.

I run and run, but the corridor had no end. I was desperate, I try wake myself, but to no avail. In that moment I started hearing some moaning and roaring sounds coming in my direction.
-What now of all times, I can't catch my breath here.
It was a horde of living dead's coming for me.
      -Seriously!??
I start running again, but I was getting too tired to run, it was of no use, there were getting closer and closer. I shout loudly :
      - I Want a Exit Now!!!!
A elevator door show up from my left into the wall. They reach to me, so I started to punch and kick with everything I got. I enter somehow in the elevator and close the door. There was only one button "Up", so I pressed it. I started to go up and saw the layers of earth once more. A little before wake up I hear a voice from the elevator.
-We hope, you enjoyed this journey and choose our service in the future again.
I was like "like hell I will".

Well that's true, if you don't believe in God then you wouldn't believe in the Devil. I used to call myself an atheist and engaged in debates here on the board against Christians - mostly against Creationists really, because it was easy to knock apart those simplistic and very literal ideas with logic. But over time my ideas of what God and the Devil really are have changed, largely as a result of reading Jung. Now I see them as archetypes that exist in our minds, whether we claim to believe in them or not. Usually when somebody says they don't believe they mean they don't buy into the idea of a supernatural being in the sky and another one in a fiery pit underground. But the archetypes are not supernatural, they're ideas in our heads that help us organize our thoughts and actions, and that sometimes show up in our dreams. Before modern times, when people knew nothing about the unconscious, they felt these things at work in their lives and tried to figure out what they were and where they came from, and they created mythology and religion and spirituality.

Also, many times what a person thinks the believe consciously is ver different from what they really believe deep in the unconscious, and that's more powerful. I believed I was an atheist and didn't believe in any kind of magic or anything supernatural, but I discovered that I had certain superstitions.

Example, at the restaurant I used to work at sometimes we'd have real slow times when no customers would come in for a long time, and we'd sit in the lobby and talk. Sometimes a new person would say something after a while like "Wow, this is really boring, I wish somebody would come in!" And we would say "If somebody does come in it's your fault". I laughed at the idea, but I realized that I actually did believe it. That's when I found out that what you think you believe and what you really believe on a deep level can be very different.

The short answer is I do. But I'm not a Strong Theist(I do not question the existence of God, I KNOW he exists.), because I'm not a sage, I don't posses the "true" knowledge that he exist, I'm just a men and people tend to put everything in doubt. So I'm a De-facto Theist - "I cannot know for certain but I strongly believe in God and I live my life on the assumption that he is there.". As my zodiac sign "Pisces" say, I'm a believer. If I try to imagine God, he is One with great Wisdom, infinity amount of Knowledge and vast amount of Power, he is made from Pure cosmic energy. A men can't reach his domain unless he is invited. But I'm not a one to explain God, it's not in my line of duty.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a series of first-person shooter survival horror video games developed by Ukrainian video game developer GSC Game World for Microsoft Windows. Based very loosely on the Strugatsky Brothers' novel Roadside Picnic and its 1979 Andrei Tarkovsky's film adaptation Stalker,[1] the games are set in the area surrounding the Chernobyl accident site, colloquially known as "The Zone", in an alternative reality where a second explosion occurs at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant some time after the first and causes strange changes in the area around it.

It seems our view of conscious and unconscious differ by a mile

This actually sounds like a very good description of the Archetype of Wholeness or the Self as put forth by Jung. It's important to understand, the unconscious is far greater and contains vastly more power that our feeble, fallible conscious mind which is a small offshoot of it that has only developed recently in evolutionary terms. The conscious mind is like a spotlight that can only focus on one thing at a time but with great clarity, at least in terms of logic and reason, but it isn't capable of the great depth and breadth of the unconscious, which is more like a floodlight or even a diffused light emerging from all around all at once and illuminates everything equally from all sides, though much more dimly than the spotlight of the conscious. Thus when we are using the conscious mind we can't see the much dimmer light of the unconscious.

This is represented by the sun and stars in my avatar to the left. The stars are always there, day and night, but the bright light of the sun overwhelms them in the daytime and they become invisible. This is why we mostly see the unconscious only at night, when dreaming, and a few times while awake, in visions, imagination, or daydreams. (Which incidentally brings up another Monkees song called, ironically enough, Daydream Believer. I won't post that one here though, I'll at least be that kind. But I like that one too.)

Our paltry little Ego, which is what we normally use as a personality and think of as all we are or can be, is very weak and loaded down with all kinds of problems - fears and pride, anger, frustration, and so many other limitations that make our lives miserable. But the Self is far greater, and when it 'speaks' to us (to the ego) it has all the majesty and power of God, and we tremble before it.

I did a little googling earlier and found this, to add to your explanation:

In the video game series S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the meaning of the acronym S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is Scavenger, Trespasser, Adventurer, Loner, Killer, Explorer, Robber.
Lol, it actually sounds fairly close to an actual stalker, though not quite. If the R stood for Rapist then it would be just about perfect.

I've seen Tarkovsky's Stalker and enjoyed it quite a bit, though I really prefer his Andrei Rublev, based on the true story of a Russian monk and icon painter who lived in the middle ages, which I just re-watched recently.

Lol you are trying to compare S.T.A.L.K.E.R (an adventurer who explore the Zone for artifacts, escaping deadly anomalies and fighting with mutants) with stalkers, who rape and kill womens for joy - FAIL

Sorry but you are going totally Off topic, so lets return to Nightmares, Dear Sir.
