oh man, I wanted to start a thread like this! I have lots of mystifying dreams, but I choose this one becuase it was actually meaningful. Though I didnt realize it until almost five years later.
The Mermaids Gift
I was in a beautiful swamp, just swimming around in my normal every day clothes. Other people were there too. We were strangers but we all had one thing in common, how much we loved this swamp. It was like a . . swampy paradise!
Mermaids appeared to us. They didnt look like your normal mermaids. Their faces were fish like, they had no hair, and they had legs. Blue shining scales. They werent terrifying, they were beautiful! They grabbed our hands and helped us swim in the water. They led us to what appeared to be their Queen, or mother, what do I know!
She said that we were all now one of them! Our gift was to be able to transform into a mermaid, and return into human form later. But she warned us, if we stayed in the water for too long - we could never return.
Against our will though, we were kicked out of the swamp, and returned home. Home was a morbid city, with only dreary colors. The streets were empty and towering highways casted shadows. Underneath some of those highways were public pools. Disgusting, filthy pools.
None the less we were desperate to go back into the water so we swam in the disgusting pool. The others left to go shopping. They wanted to shop to feel. . human again. . becuase we were enjoying the simple joy of water too much. I got out of the pool, but I stayed behind.
After a while, I saw an old friend of mine by another pool. He jumped in! I was so excited to see a friend that I personally know become a mermaid too!! I run up to the pool, and I screeeam out his name. Over and over and over! But the lifeguard came to me and said.
"Hes deep in the water. He can't hear you anymore. You should go home. The pool is closed"
I didnt understand. And I was sad that my friend didnt hear me call his name.
It was late. And the city became dark with just a few scattering lights. I walked endlessly. I didnt know where home was. I saw a fancy hotel. Through its glass walls I can see an indoor pool. The hotel was also empty, and the pool was DISGUSTING. Black, greenish, bubbling water. But the lifeguard nodded and encouraged me. He said.
"Your friends came back from shopping. They couldn't wait to get back into the water. Theyre waiting for you!!"
I stared at the water for ages. Bubbling, murky water. I dive in!
ECSTASY! It was divine! I felt absolute freedom and joy. And I can BREATHE underwater. Just knowing I could BREATHE made me feel so alive. My movement underwater is greater than on land. On land I move horizontally, here, I move in ANY DIRECTION. It was wonderful. After flipping underwater, I spotted the others. They were pure mermaids now, complete with blue skin.
I swam up to them, and they were crying. I asked them what was wrong. And they said "We can't go back." To be honest, I didnt mind. I argued the water was better. But they pointed up above the water and said "But they can't see us. They can't hear us."
I looked up. From my perspective the water is soooo clear that I could see the land as clear as day. My heart sank when I saw my mother by the pool's edge. Next to her were other parents. My mom was crying, looking into the murky water. She was holding flowers. And she cried and cried, and I understood pain knowing - that she couldn't see me. She couldn't hear me.
My vision blurred out into water expanding infinately.

Five years ago I didnt give this dream a second thought. Now, it holds so much meaning. Every aspect of the dream is a metaphor - from the mermaids - to the murkyness - to the breathing.
Can you figure out my dream?
The friend that couldn't hear me anymore almost died five years ago in real life.
