      Bed Hopping

Recently I have been experiencing dreams where I will be doing some sort of activity that will result in me falling to the ground from various heights (i.e. building or ground level or bike etc.) followed by my physical body violently waking up and hopping upward and falling on my bed. This hop is somehow done by me horizontally and its happened about 6-7 times. Usually I'll hop 3-6 inches off the bed!

Has this happened to anyone else?

This is called a hypnic jerk. It's very common, actually.

Hmm, interesting that I was neither falling asleep nor sleep deprived, I literally woke up into it.

I'm not on DV much these days, but I'll try to toss a cool dream or two into my DJ.

Not the nicest way to wake up, is it?

Heck no! I never fail to apologize or have the intense urge to say "sorry" to a person who isn't even there whenever it happens to me. It's instantaneous, too, so the moment my muscles jerk my body, my mouth just instantly goes "Sorry" to the night air. Then I get that embarassed feeling, 'cause if anyone WAS there to hear it, they'd probably be laughing at me, but once I realize no one is there, then it occurs to me I just apologized to no one.

I usually wake up with a jerk if my dream ended with me almost impacting with the ground from a high fall. It's not the best of feeling to feel... XD

LOL, if I'm falling, usually I'll float gracefully to the ground at the last few feet getting slower and slower as I land. Then when it seems I'm about to touch down nicely like a feather...

*THUD!!!* and the whole bed shakes!

Has anyone had it so bad you actually, like, "pop" out of your bed, getting some airtime? I just have a full-body jerk that makes my whole body move, but I've never came vertically upward from my bed, getting airtime.

hahahaha I don't know how many times I've done that

Most of the time it happens as I wake up, but it's not unusual for it to happen when I'm simply laying awake in bed. Not like it happens every night, but probably once every couple months or so, sometimes more.

Happens to me every time I have a hypnic jerk - usually I come to my senses before I land again.

Sounds kinda terrifying! Have you ever landed a little off of your bed or even fallen out of it....?

Surprisingly not. I have however punched myself quite hard accidentally while doing it.

Never once for me, either. In fact, the only damage I can recall from it is once when I blacked my fingernail from hitting my hand on the wall

I had a recurring dream for years where I'd be on a skateboard, realize I didn't know how to skateboard, have it fly out from under my feet and I fall into bed. Had it a couple of times a month, actually ended up on the floor one night.

This used to happen to me a lot, usually precipitated by a fall in a dream. I did actually get airtime, and seemed to wake up AFTER the impact, or during the descent of the fall.

So, it would feel like I was being woken after falling mysteriously from the sky into my bed. It never really bothered me that much, but it would definitely startle me every time it happened.

That's happened to me a fair share of times.

It usually happens if I'm unusually tired or stressed physically.
