      Awake?

I often have dreams 5 or 10 minutes after I have fallen asleep involving me in exactly the same position as I was before i went to sleep, i feel conscious and awake. It usually results in me feeling as if something is lifting me from the bed - sometimes I am thrown from the bed, and sometimes people come in to the room. It all feels very real and more often than not I awake hyperventilating. Not sure if it is some form of night terror?

      Is there any fear involved?

I sometimes get these too. Are you sure they're actually 5-10 minutes after falling asleep, or does it just seem like it? These often are my first dreams of the night, and upon waking I find that about 2 hours have actually passed. Even though REM is the last part of your sleep cycle, it's usually the only part you remember, so you might have a memory lapse making it seem like falling asleep and your dream are adjacent memories when there's a huge lapse in time, in reality.

This is from my own experience, and I hardly mean to discredit what you're experiencing--it's possible to dream in other sleep stages as well, which would also explain the different state of mind. Also, my brother used to have night terrors--he would literally scream and shout and romp around the houses, remembering nothing, so I don't think you're experiencing those, at least
