Music in Dreams
I was having a non-lucid dream the other night in which I walked past a group of people sitting in a circle on the ground singing and playing music. I cannot remember what it was, but at the time it struck me as very trippy and beautiful. This got me thinking about where that music came from. I am a musician, and I was thinking about listening to music in my lucid dreams and then trying to remember it when I wake up and recreate it in waking life. Has anyone else had any experiences of hearing beautiful music in their dreams that doesn't actually exist (that you know of) in waking life?

I've had stuff like that happen to me. Once it was a hilarious metal song that was created by clipping together sound bites from arthur with a heavy metal back track(yes, I watch lots of dumb youtube videos). But there have been other times where I've heard really beautiful music that I can never quite remember. I don't know if I subconsciously stole it or actually generated it, which is possible considering I'm also a musician. Its something really interesting and once I can LD consistently I plan on investigating it

Yeah, this has happened to me in a lucid dream in fact. I am a pianist and keyboard player myself, so (yeah call me crazy) I used a lucid dream to jam on the piano. Let me say it was the most fun and exhilarating experience I have ever had. I came up with a completely crazy jazz/boogie-woogie tune. Something I would never have come up with in real life. When I woke up, I ran to the piano and managed to get a few of the runs and the basic rythm down before the rest faded.
An experience I had before this, (non lucid) was near an end of a dream after we found this book that could rewrite history. Somehow when I opened the book I found my name inside as some king or something (I don't quite remember) with a musical piece underneath. The notes sort of stretched off the page and turned into this entire symphony of music with an entire orchestra. It was very beautifull, and as I NEVER listen to that kind of music in waking life, and it was completely unfamiliar, I know that it was created in my head.
Things like this amaze me every time that our brains can come up with things like this on the spot.

I've had that happen to me several times. The most notable didn't actually have to do with music, but an idea for a totally epic book I'm working on.
I think of it as being an extractor... On yourself!

My brother says he very often hears music in his dreams. He said its alot like listening to McCartney's recent release, Ecectric Arguments released by, The Fireman (Paul McCartney is a member}, listed under electronica.

Yes, I've heard and played music in dreams that sounds very good. I usually forget it upon waking up (unless I've heard it in reality). Often, I'll play a song in a dream and it will sound just fantastic. Then I'll wake up and if I do remember it, it seems really crap. Heh.

Dreams feel real while we're in them... It seems the brain can be convinced of just about anything in the dream state.
-
Well, since the logic center is out, I would expect so. :P
-
I can't remember ever hearing music in any dream :S
-
Yeah I'm definitely gonna make a project out of thoroughly experimenting with the possibilities of creating/listening to music in dreams and trying to analyze it so it can be reproduced to some extent in waking reality as accurately as possible.
-
I've heard music once or twice before, one was a real song that sounded pretty similar to the actual thing.
-
once while i was about to slip into a dream, i heard the most amazing beat ever. i feel like this music was MY music that i created in my head without actually creating it conciuosly. every once and a while i'll hear music before i fall asleep and i'll just listen to it before i fall asleep. it always different and it's always exactly what i want to hear.

I do a little dabbling with music (I use Reason 4) and in a few random dreams, this doesn't happen ever, I created the most amazing / beautiful / powerful songs. The only problem is, it's more of an emotional feeling and I can't ever recall what the actual songs were.

I am a songwriter, and one of my lucid dream goals has been to hear a song I haven't written yet. Last night in a non-lucid dream, I was sitting in a bar when I heard a song playing over the speakers. I recognized the singer- it was me! But I didn't recognize the song. I woke with the song still in my head. It seemed a little weak in waking life, but I have been working on it all day and I think I'm going to make it a real song.

Lucid dreams give you such an opportunity for creativity! One of the best things you can do while lucid is to be amazed and inspired by art.
Some music lucid goals
- Hear the most beautiful music ever
- Become the best musician in the world / Form the best band ever
- Perform with your favorite artist / Have a personal concert with your favorite artist
- Create a world where playing one's [instrument of choice] is a weapon. Unfortunately, the world is ruled by an evil Jimi Hendrix and his Fender Stratocaster; however, your [instrument of choice] is the best, and you must protect the unfortunately untalented Jessica Alba from this tyrant.
:D
Of course, this is just a start....haha. Good luck in your future music endeavors.

I played in some two man band at a house party in one of my dreams. It was some rockish techno music i was playing on a piano. It was probably one of the coolest music I've heard. To bad I cant remember it nor can I play the eletric piano

My next lucid dream (tonight :D ) will involve me jamming with Alter Bridge to this new awesome single. Did I mention this single was awesome?

Well I remember one time I ad a dream where there was someone singing and I couldnt understand what they were singing but just the sound of it overpowered my emotions making me cry and I woke up still crying with tears all over my pillow. It wasnt loud crying just silent tears. I dont know what it was because I normally wont break down like that and I dont remember anything at te time that was bothering me in RL that could have transmitted the emotions into the music in the dream.
-
Yeah I think that's one of the things that can make music in our dreams so overwhelmingly beautiful. Because of the altered state of consciousness we're in, we experience emotions much more freely and without restriction, as opposed to waking life where we normally keep a damper on our emotions so we don't get too emotional in front of other people and start crying or something, which many people would find embarrassing or even humiliating.

I was attacked by some thugz and pulled a guitar out of of nowhere and played the greatest song in the world to save my life. It was very Dimebag-like of Pantera.
-
I often hear amazing music in my dreams...I wish I could remember it when I woke up.
-
I'm learning to play guitar at the moment, and I've had one or two dreams (they weren't even that long ago) where I would grab a guitar in the dream and play something complicated that I would in no way be able to play IRL. Interestingly enough, I didn't really remember what I played when I woke up. It was probably something I'd never heard before, because I would have remembered specific songs and such.
Sometimes I'll hear music in my dreams that I know IRL, and I pretty much always remember those songs.
-
Cool dream. That makes me think of a real story that happened to Paul McCartney in S. america somewhere. He was attacked by thugz who didn't know who he was. But he was able to talk his way out of it

I found this on another lucid dreaming forum. He says he was sitting in a garden and playing an instrument that looked like a glass square of some kind that he played by tapping it and sliding his fingers across it. He remembered a little bit of the song he was playing when he woke up and managed to make a short song out of it.

I had I dream when I was younger were I heard a melody playing in the background. I still remember this melody exactly even though I had the dream probably over 10 years ago... Sounded vaguely similar to a Super Mario melody. I heard another song in my dreams a couple weeks ago... I wrote down the lyrics that I remembered in my dream journal
