Thinking will sometimes summon things?

So here's the problem, I always think about scary things. I know it's a dream and all but will a thought somehow bring forth of what you think. :? Like, "I wonder what's in that closet" and what pops in my mind is some type of monster. I don't really get scared of the monster, but I don't want them popping around.

That's pretty much the golden rule of lucid dream control. If you start thinking about what will be behind a door, stop right there. That is, if it's something bad. The same rule applies to summoning dream characters, teleporting, and mostly all other dream control. Expect someone to be behind you, expect an orange peel to be on the floor, etcetera.

There's not much else you can do besides not thinking about it. If you do end up summoning something scary, well, you're lucid right? So you can always say "go away!" in a commanding voice; it'll probably back off. :P I've done that to monsters in a few of my lucids and it was quite hilarious.

Thinking about something will focus your attention on that archetype, activating it. For instance, thinking to yourself "There will not be a monster in that closet" will in all likelyhood create a monster, because the archetype of closet monster is much more well defined than the archetype of "not". This is the reason expectations are not reliable in dreams.

The thing to remember is that if your focused attention on that element creates and sustains it, then ignoring it will eliminate it. Ignoring can be difficult to accomplish, but you can always find something else to focus on.

I've read that the unconscious mind cannot understand negative statements. So if you say "I hope there is NOT a monster in the closet", the unconscious mind drops the "NOT" and hears "I hope there is a monster in the closet." And presto.

So, always phrase your thoughts of will in the positive. This goes well beyond just lucid dreaming; it applies to all thoughts and personal goals.
