I've told a ton of people about lucid dreaming, about how awesome it is, how its realistic, the cool stuff you can do, so why would they not try it out? I don't get it, does it sound like too much work? Is it just too weird? No one who I've told lucid dreams about has even tried it. Why?
Ever told somebody about an awesome show say firefly, and they seem uninterested in it until a couple months after you are done? its laziness or unwilling to try that does that.
Yeah that's probably right... I know a ton of people like that (myself included), it just sucks that they're missing out on something so awesome.
Meh people don't realize what lucid dreaming is until they experience if for themselves. I've told some class mates but they just seem to forget. A lot of other people think it just sounds to out there. The best thing is that you have discovered it and can enjoy lucidity for the rest of your life.
There are several options, one, they don't believe it. Two, they think that despite it sounding awesome, it is just your crazyness that makes it so, the experience itself isn't so great. Three, they are lazy. Four, must be only for a few people. Five, too much work. Six, too busy.
Choose one. Personally, only the people who had a LD after I told them about it, started practicing, before that it would only be "Oh, cool, wish I could do it"
Society doesn't think about dreams as anything of importance. To them dreams are just random ocurrences that happends every once and awhile. Some people don't even know that we dream every night. Some people think they don't dream at all. These people don't know that if they didn't dream, they would go insane. When you talk about Lucid Dreaming, people just don't care. This isn't true for everybody though, there are people like you and me that hear about "Lucid Dreaming" and are instantly interested and pick up the hobby. If I don't die in the Marines, then I am going to become an author and write a fictional story about Lucid Dreaming. If this fiction I write is good and becomes popular, than wether or not if the readers become interested in the subject, they will still be less ignorant about it. I have so many great ideas for novels, hopefully I become successful at being a novelist.
In my circle of friends, dreams seem to be a bit of a taboo.
Most of said friends seem very uncomfortable talking about them.
It's kind of unfortunate really :/

Yeah I got one person on this site (stayed for one week.) everyone else says oh cool and want nothing to do with it.
I asked my friend why he doesn't want to. He said he feels like his dreams have meaning and doesn't want to ruin that
So far I've told 4 people, and out of those 4, only 3 have been all for it and very excited about the subject. The other simply said that she enjoys her dreams the way that they are, and wouldn't change a thing even if she could. However, I think the thing stopping most people, even if they are interested, is that lucidity mandates patience. The world today is really a quick fix society, wanting rewards in the now, not later. Those that understand delayed gratification will always reap rewards.
I can relate to this. I've always been a dreamer, but I've never felt comfortable broaching the subject of lucid dreaming (or dreaming at all) with the majority of my friends.Quote:

doubt it because most would not know what was going on and probably wake up from whatever reason*cough* sex *cough* and just wake up thinking wow that was amazing but not actually know what lucid dreaming is or anything about it really...
and even if some did they would'nt care for whatever silly reason such as "dude i have drugs for that!"

to be honest i don't believe that they were meant to take on this path or at least aren't meant to just yet ;)
i think there's some degree of intelligence/critical thinking skills a person has to have to be able to recognize the sheer possibilities lucid dreaming offers.
Yeah most of my friends are like that too.... i bet if they were to just have 1 and know what it was, they would never doubt it again. thats too much to ask though ._.
Well in my opinion most people may shrug it off, or give you some reason like they dont want to change their dreams, however, I believe that most think it is too far out there, or not even possible... and just figure your imagination is extra active lol... most people do not believe in it when told about it and even the mainstream media proves that. They are still trying to figure out Out of body experiences and to many it is still impossible or some kind of misnomer, when what it really is, is an unintentional wild.. lol
From my experience talking with friends, the people who aren't interested don't fully understand it, the problem is that they think they do. Everyone experiences different levels of lucidity in their dreams but unless you're intentionally aiming for it full lucidity is hard to stumble on. So most people experience those dreams that aren't quite lucid but maybe rather vivid and they believe they've had one and that it wasn't that special compared to their other dreams. I think if everyone had an experience of full lucidity at least once we would have a lot more dreamers out there..
And there's the laziness factor of course...why take time to mess with your dreams when you could be making money or trying to bang that girl 3 doors down? ...if only they knew.
I've found this applies to a lot of things in life in general - recommending pubs, albums, movies, books etc. It led me to the conclusion that people are more concerned with their own hobbies/worries/life events to start with somebody elses. However I have learnt from this to really throw myself into anything a good friend recommends, after all if they are your close friends there's a big chance you'll enjoy it!

I think many people are turned off by the idea of being conscious during sleep. For them, sleep is a time to blank out and be dead to the world.

When I told my brother, he thought it was complete bullshit. I think he finaly accepts it as true now, but he still isn't interested in it. LOL, when I told him Inception was based off of lucid dreaming, he tried to argue with me and explain to me what Lucid Dreaming was. I just laughed and said " yeah I don't know what Lucid Dreaming is, I have only been doing it for two years and am the one who told you about it."

When I talk about it to my boyfriend, I get a sort of eye-rolling, sighing response. I've explained to him many times why I want to LD. It isn't that he doesn't understand it, it's that he's very committed to things being for a 'purpose', and he finds it overwhelmingly pointless to take up time during the day to induce LDs which will have no effect in waking life. Even though he understands they can be really 'fun', he wouldn't spend time and effort to do something just because it's fun.

When I told my friend about lucid dreaming, he said that he had one (didnīt know what it was though) long time ago, but allways when he tried to do something, the dream started from the beginning, until he woke up. So I think the reason he doesnīt get interested is because it was such a dissapointment for him.
PS. I think that people would get more interested if they would find out about it themself instead me telling them about it.
Yeah if only they had at least one lucid dream before I told them about it then it might be a different story...

Some people just aren't interested in it. There are lots of things that some people think is great but others are not interested in.
On the other hand, I think lucid dreaming could be enjoyed by anyone, since you can do anything in them, no matter what waking life interests you have.
On the bright side it must feel great being one of the few people who can do it.
Some people are afraid it can take you away from the real world, and think it is dangerous (like the entire 'OMG that guy shot someone, must be because he LDs!!' story...).

And I think its also just hard to explain such a deep concept to someone who has never thought about it. You're basically trying to cram months or years of your experience with this topic into someone who probably has never heard about it or even knows the words lucid dreaming.
From my experience, whenever I've told someone about it, I can only really tell them the definition (knowing your dreaming while dreaming and thus being conscious during a dream) and a few possibilities from anecdotal experiences of my own lucid dreams. Its like telling someone that you can fly around in your dreams, but there's a big difference between imagining flying around in your dreams and actually flying yourself in a lucid dream.
For instance, there's an almost indescribable feeling you get when you're first lucid in a dream. You know this feeling right? I've read very interesting threads here trying to describe it, and its certainly one of those things that you just know about when someone on here talks about it. But the person you're trying to explain this concept to would not have any reference of that.
