i was wondering if anyone has any tips on falling asleep quickly?
by quickly i mean in perhaps less than 15 minutes. i often take a hour or some nights even a couple of hours. i'd very much like that chunk of my waking life back :blue:

Get up early, stay as physically active as you can. Those seem to work best for me. Also, you may want to change the time you go to bed. If it is taking an hour to get to sleep, then perhaps you are getting too much sleep.
It rarely takes me more than 10 minutes to fall asleep.
If you're not tired, don't go to bed. Wait until you're so tired that you will fall asleep only minutes after going to bed. You might not get more than 4 - 5 hours sleep the first night, but this will even out and you'll get back to normal.
I have problems falling asleep early on Sundays (stayed up late in the weekend), but there's no reason to go to bed before you are tired, because you wont sleep any longer anyway.
Drinking tea or warm milk can help you though.
Take a melatonin or two, five hours before you want to go to bed. You'll be more tired around that general time.
Get plenty of exercise.....& if all else fails, try a WILD! :D That is what I had to do when I was 3, b/c I could never sleep at night. Oh well! ^o.o^
I find it harder to fall asleep when I've been up late watching TV or sitting in front of any similar electrical device that fires a stream of electricity through a phosphorous gas mix at 70kHz into my face(i.e., a computer monitor).
We human creatures are finely attuned to variations in light, and it's natural for us to sleep after a period of darkness, so when we give ourselves high doses of light at night it's just like sending a signal to the brain saying "there's still light out there, you need to stay awake more!"
Yet here I am sitting in front of my electron beam at 4am.

HERE is your answer!! go to the nearest health food place and get Melatonin in the sublingual spray. This is a natural chemical produced by ur body when its night out and ur tired. With the spray it gets absorded very quickly and you will feel the natural effects of being tired (you won't feel drugged, its natural) in 20-30 mins. Get the spray that has B6 in it cuz thats good for dreaming. I used to have a lot of trouble now I don't...THIS IS YOUR ANSWER!!

Clear your mind. Notice when you think. When a thought comes in to your head, notice it. Don't fight it, just let it pass. Eventually your mind will become completely blank, and you sleep!
That's basically a form of meditation. It takes practice to get really good, but my world religions teacher said he falls asleep in about 2 minutes, always.
What he says he does is when he gets a thought, he picks it up and puts it on a shelf in the back of his mind.
Not everything works for everyone, and not everything that works great works on the first few tries. If it seems like it might work, try it for a week. If it doesn't work, try something else for a week.
I wish I could fal asleep fast... It takes me about and hour to fall asleep. :(
Try reading a Book whilst in bed. Simple enough. I never get further than a Chapter then my eyelids feel heavy.
Ive tired, but I get so into books, INfact I read everytnight beofre bed. When I read it is so simmlar to dremaing, im there, so I get excited more than tired. any other tips that coudl help??
Wow, You are hard to please. Ok, I found an old English recipe called a "Posset". Comprises of Hot Milk, Treacle, Honey, Brown Sugar all mixed together. Drink it down in one. Oh, and yes, You can add some Booze if you want to.
thanks everyone for the tips. no luck yet. i'm working on lowering my stress levels, which is my #1 problem i think.
dreamboat, oddly enough i quite often have hot milk and brown sugar at bedtime. comfort drink.
Someone mentioned taking melatonin a few hours before bed. Don't do that. Melatonin is designed to give you a full night's sleep (8-9 hours), and after that you become very restless. So if you take it 4 hours before bed, and you go to sleep, you'll wake up about 4 hours later and may have difficulty going back to sleep because of the restlessness. You could say that the melatonin's effect doesn't start until you begin sleep, but that isn't true. Once it enters your system, it time releases until it is effectively used up. Once that happens, it triggers your body into thinking that sleep time is over, and you will struggle to sleep again.
This happens with me. I have the same problem as you, falling asleep. Maybe not everyone would have a difficult time sleeping after taking a dose of melatonin a few hours before bed, but like I said, it may make sleeping throughout the whole night more difficult.
So instead, take one or two Melatonin (3mg to 6mg) just as you are getting ready for bed (it takes 20 minutes to hit) and as you are in bed it should help slow you down so you can sleep faster. It cuts my sleep waiting time in half. Taking two of them may noticeably enhance your dreams as well.
Anyway, that's just my opinion on melatonin. Not everyone is affected by it the same way, but it is known to cause restlessness after 8-9 hours after taking it.
I am not too sure if this is of any help, but make yourself a habbit of not visualizing anything until it happens naturally. Same goes with thoughts, just stay totally clean of all thoughts and let them pass.
I never seem to be stuck with any thoughts when I go to sleep, usually I am gone in about 30 seconds.
My thughts keep me awake. I day dream when i go to bed, and it keeps me up :(.
wow! many thoughts on what makes you sleepy - im gonna try em! but i do find that when i go out for a meal and eat and stuff my face i get real tired. :D
Regarding Melatonin, I use a chewable .5mg form from Trader Joe's food store. I usually just take one, wait about 10 minutes and then take another. After another 10 minutes, I see how sleepy I feel. If it's not kicking in, I take another every 10 minutes or so, until I either feel sleepy, or I've reached 2mg total (4 pills).
After 30 minutes or so of slowly adding more Melatonin, I usually am able to fall asleep easily, even if I wasn't tired when I started taking them.
Melatonin can be a great help, but try not to rely on it regularly (more than 3 days in a row), and try to keep the dosages down to less than 3mg.
