      The Intruder

For those that don't know what it is, its basically sleep paralysis with hallucinations. It can come as a semi common side effect. Its when you wake up in the middle of the night and find you can’t move, or even cry for help, your body is paralyzed but your minds awake.
For most people this is where it stops but other's aren't so lucky. If, during this bizarre paralysis, you suddenly felt that someone—or something—was watching you, you have come face to face with the waking hallucination known as the Intruder.
This phenomena has been recorded for hundreds of years, but strangely there a number of "common" intruders. The most terrifying thing is your awake, so its the worst kind of nightmare but its real, you cant control it or stop it because your not in a dream.
The most common is a goblin or ghoul that sits on the end of your bed then climbs up towards you and your powerless to help. This is one i commonly experience but i know there is a lot of story's of a Night elf/gnome type creature known as the incubus that will whisper in your ear.
The most common one i get tormented by is a ghost, a lot of the time i cant see it but i know its there i can feel it and it slaps me from time to time. Occasionally i will wake up and see a miniature girl in a while dress sitting on my desk.
I also have a large cat from time to time.
Since discovering this its not as scary anymore as i know what i'm experiencing and can convince myself its not real but even at that people hanging from the celling in the middle of the night is always gonna creep you out. Before i knew of the intruder i was convinced i was being haunted convinced it was all real. My mother recently told me i used to talk about Goblins at the end of my bed when i was a child, thankfully i don't remember this.

Has anyone else experienced this. If so is there any dominant or reoccurring characters or creatures that visit you?
I hope this thread will help you understand and reduce the fear that this phenomena can cause.

No, all my experiences with sleep paralysis have been enjoyably peaceful and relaxing. I believe that sleep paralysis can be linked to demons. Even if you don't believe in god, I've heard that calling on gods name for help (even in your mind) can completely remove any paralysis and removes all hallucinations. Might want to give it a shot

Sleep paralysis has been related to "demons" just because in the past people didn't have the instruments to understand phenomena like SP, and the experience is so real that these intruders could easily be described as demons. There's nothing mystical about it at all though. It's just a physiological disfunction that can spontaneously happen to virtually anyone at least once in a lifetime and calling on Gods can help just because of autosuggestion if you're religious, if you're not, the general recomendation is just to breathe deeply to understand there's nothing real about it and to try to enjoy the show even because there's not much you can consciously do about the paralysis itself. Resisting this state can only activate the limbic system stimulating and prolonging hallucinations. The best defense is always knowledge, knowing what you are facing. I had SP once, when it happened I had no idea what I was going through . It scared the cr%p out of me. I was paralysed and there was an old witch staring at me half a meter away from my face.... Still shivering thinking about it, anyway these intruders are only generated by your expectations and anxiety caused by the fear of the unknown, by the paralysis. You feel someone's in the room and bang there he is! It's like dreams, what you expect to be happening, it happens because in fact... you're awake AND you're dreaming. I think this is even more paradoxical than lucid dreaming itself

I personally believe there is a reason that this state always invites horrific figures, never hallucinating anything pleasent. My friend tried inducing sleep paralysis multiple nights in a row. Many of these dreams support the idea that this state (the state of SP) is an open door for demons. One night a dark hooded figure walked into his room setting a dead body at the foot of his bed, he was so afraid that he had to look away, seeing a pentagram along with other symbols on his wall in blood. Next to this was written "I know your awake."

You can't deny the presence that you feel, it's a fear even when there is nothing to fear.

I've had the joy of waking up and having a terrifyingly real demon sit on my dresser in the morning. The fear is in the realism and being completely sure that that demonic creature is a real creature out to kill you. After researching it all, I had another morning of waking up and instantly feeling the presence of something, I could not move and I knew I was experiencing SP. I thought to myself, "this is all going to pass and nothing bad is going to happen" I opened my eyes and remained stock still until my body woke up. The sense of a presence was always there, but I had to fight the sense of panic that was slowly eating away at my mind because if I didn't, I knew the consequences would be shitting my pants .

Hahaha, I'm sure that you would agree that there has to be more then a mind trip going on. If your mind was purely hallucinating, then you would see some good stuff too!

Medical research suggests that these state causes horrific figures to manifest because they are a product of strong sudden anxiety caused by a synergy of factors like being completely paralysed, having no freaking idea of what's going on and all this leads to a kind of panic attack ( this is what happened to me, infact I thought I had a panic attack). The symptoms of sleep paralysys are very similar to a panic attack, tachycardia, hyper or hypo ventilation, fear of dying. All this working together isn't pleasant, it's very disturbing, that's why you don't have teddy bears or mini ponys dancing in your bredroom but evil presences. When you know what's going on and don't panic you don't necessarily have these unpleasant visitors, like in SP during a WILD. Well that's at least my rational explanation to the phenomenon but anyone can see it as he/she prefers. One thing can be accepted by everyone though.... when it happens it's fu%&*ng scary!!!!

Since Posting this thread My SP experiences have gotten worse, for the first time my hallucinations are communicating with me. This is causing me to doubt if they are really just figments of my mind or something more. I don't believe in the super natural and that includes any religious affliction but last night is really pushing me to question this. Last night i woke up in SP on my bellow with my face to the side i could feel something on my back and could see a small goblin leaning into my ear from the corner of my eye it whispered into my ear and for the first time i was able to hear a message from these "intruders". It told me that they knew i was trying to convince myself they where just in my head and they knew deep down i had my suspicions that they where something more It then went on the tell me that "we will be watching" If i'll be honest with you i'm not really sleeping anymore... in fear of what will come next.

Mabey it's time to take a break from LD. You are having a hard time convincing yourself it's not real so it makes it worse. Humans only use 20% of there brain capacity, so don't get sucked into the supernatural. Your expiriencing projections of your mind. Go into the dream and face your fears. That might help. SP protects you from hurting yourself, not torcher you with demons. When you wake up bring your good dreams with you.

The message that was told to you sounds exactly like the message that my friend was given. His was on the wall in blood next to a pentagram. It doesn't get more specific than that. Mirror, I know people that Have learned to enjoy all forms of SP, Howcome they don't ever have happy hallucinations if they arent afraid at all? By the way, I'm not try to start an Internet fight, I'm just try to prove a point.

Teddy please try my previous advice so that you can get a good nights sleep.

No problem Metalconch, I think sometimes people can say they were not afraid or disturbed but they could be lying, or it could have happened some times but others not. A lot of people here on DV who has been in SP many times has hypnagocic hallucinations that don't necessarily lead to demonic figures. I just try to be rational, looking for answers in science rather than beliefes, but I don't want to be right and prove someone's wrong, I'm just saying my opinion that is nothing more than the way of seeing things from my perspective which, of course, is not universal.

I experienced sleep paralysis as a child. Nothing like you're experiencing though! It seems like you should take a break from trying to become Lucid. If you're having a hard time convincing yourself that it isn't real, you should definitely quit. Surround yourself with friends and forget about LD'ing for some time. Remember, it is only your brain performing tricks on you because you're getting yourself worked up.

Even if you can convince yourself there not really the hallucination will also be scary to a degree just because of what they consist off.
I think the fact i suffer at least once a night is the result of sleep deprivation as opposed to anything else as i'm only getting 3 hours a night at the moment due to several jobs and academic commitments. I think a break is in oder at least until the summer anyway.
