How to say "Lucid dreaming" in other languages?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to figure out how to say "Lucid Dreaming" in other languages. Can anyone help me? While I can use google translate, it doesn't always get the gender and other semantics right...

Korean:
맑은 꿈

Spanish:
sueño lúcido

French (The Lucid Dream):
le rêve lucide < (The Lucid Dream)
? < lucid dreaming

German:
luzides Träumen <Confirmed

Chinese:
清醒梦

Italian:
Sogni Lucidi <Confirmed

Russian:
осознанные сновидения <Confirmed

Finnish:
selkouni

The German translation should be "luzides Träumen" afaik.

"le rêve lucide" is actually the translation for "The lucid dream".
I'm not sure what the correct French verb is though, or if there is one at all.

I'm not sure there is a finnish verb for lucid dreaming because finnish don't work like that so easily, but the one I've heard people use for the noun "a lucid dream" is "selkouni".

Selkouni is a term used with scientific speech or then it is directly borrowed as it is in English.

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it's 'Lucide dromen' in Dutch. I just use the english term for it :P 'Lucide' means 'lucid' and 'dromen' means 'dreaming' (it can also be the plural of 'dream').

'Lucidno sanjanje' in Serbian.

Usually when I talk about LDs I just use the initialism "LD" or the rather drawn out "a dream in which you know that you are dreaming". Sorry, but most Chinese people are rather illogical and can't bear with technical terms.

I prefer English when it comes to lucid dreams. Chinese does not have any mechanism to form new words. So any technical terms need to be a jumble of everyday mundane characters. For example, "carbon dioxide" is "two oxygen modified carbon". It really sounds very stupid.

"Rêve lucide" is right for french! ;) i don't know how else I would say it.

Might want to add to the end of the finnish term something to state that it's a noun, and not a verb.

I come from Chinese background too, and agreed.

清醒梦 looks like some kind of google translation. the more accurate term is 清明梦. (ching ming mung)

清明 (qing ming/ching ming) is a holiday where it is popular to, you know, go to tombs and do some rituals. So your term sounds very ridiculous. Maybe qing ming doesn't exist in Taiwan, where you presumably live based on your profile?

I repeat it, never use Chinese when talking about science to people who understand English. Chinese is THE language not to use in science, be it lucid dreams or programming.

By the way, I don't know if anybody has translated LaBerge's books to Chinese...maybe I can try...but actually Chinese dictionaries have no word for LD.

I can't believe there is no fixed term for lucid dreaming in Chinese...how can it not be? For now there already should be some communities interested in the subject, some websites, probably books translated...Even if nobody knew about LDing before (which I highly doubt - lucid dreaming did not just originated somewhere in the west and then carried over everywhere, there are so many mentions about it in different cultures) - for now someone should have already came up with the term. (Btw, I'm not trying to be rude or ignorant, just interested in the matter :D)

Also, as for terminology, LDing in Russian "осознанные сновидения" as stated above also only means "conscious dreaming". You need a good set of words to describe "lucid" in Russian :)

I'm no anti-patriot, but Chinese people do not have any knowledge of lucid dreaming. I've went into the biggest library in China (which is quite near my home!) and couldn't find any reference to lucid dreaming in both the neuroscience and the philosophy sections.

MUCH more people know about near-death experiences and "prophetic" dreams in China than lucid dreams. I think this is because Chinese tradition regards dreams as something coming from outside the mind, be it from spirits in ancient times or food in recent times. Nobody even cares to study dreams. When I introduced my friends to LDing, they bombarded me with questions like:
1. How long were you into this stuff?
2. Is this studied by other people?
3. That sounds too much like Inception!
4. Well, if that were true, how great it would be!

Another great example follows. I go to my friends house for dinner, and his mom is there. We talk about another guy we know who can LD, or in our words, can control his dreams. My friend's mom overheard it. Her reply was, "Was he stuck in a state between sleeping and dreaming, in which he knows he is asleep, but just can't end the dream?" We just said, "No. He does it on purpose." and she was very surprised.

I think that the big thing that China lacks is lucid dreaming. Science, Christianity, free-market economics, and all other good stuff have been successfully introduced into China, but LD, little trivial LD, is still foreign to most of us in China. I believe that a good term for lucid dreaming is the key to solve this riddle. It's up to us here at DV to come up with it.

BTW, I am working on a translation of an abridged edition of LaBerge's Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming. Stay tuned!

Just a little correction, since I'm italian:

sogno lucido = lucid dream
sogni lucidi = lucid dreams

The common translation for for "Lucid dreaming" is
fare sogni lucidi = to have lucid dreams

I like this thread, but now i feel bad that the majority of the chinese don't know about lucid dreaming (compared to other countries, of course). Hopefully one day it will be at least a term which most people know what it means.
