WILD's are ridiculously hard

Not a rant.. i'm just looking for some tips on where i'm going wrong.

I usually try to WILD during an afternoon nap, after school and after i work out so i'm pretty exhausted from the day. It's very easy for me to fall asleep and lose conscious that way. But when I try to stay conscious trying to fall asleep.. it seems like it's almost impossible.

It's like my mouth just loves to water up with saliva everytime I try to wild. When i fall asleep naturally, i wake up to find my mouth pretty dry. Sometimes i'll get to SP stage and my heart feels like it's going a million miles a second- and then i have to swallow because my throat is getting clogged up with saliva and it's uncomfortable, which takes me out of SP. very frustrating.

second, i always lose count when counting my breaths. once i lose count, i'll be like, okay- ill start over. then i would lose count before i even got to 10 from random thoughts and mini-dreams and HI. i know this is an awareness issue- but it just seems like i can't get my body to fall asleep properly if i'm concentrating on counting my breaths.

third, is WILD all about your body not moving? or does it have anything to do with the mind also? for some reason, i have a feeling that if I can lose my conscious just for a bit to get into deep REM, i can catch myself in a dream. In other words- trust myself to know that I'm dreaming as soon as a dream starts. Although i've tried this already and failed, it seems like a better approach for me.

any tips? suggestions?

Yeah WILDs are hard. But you're making them harder by doing them wrong.

First of all, yes WILDS can be done during naps, but not just any naps. As you probably know, your REM cycles get longer and longer when you sleep during the night. That's why it's easier to dream in the mornings and nearly impossible at night. When you wake up in the morning, it takes some time for that cycle to reset. This usually happens within 5 hours. Napping before the cycle has reset puts you in a very optimal position to WILD, napping after makes it almost impossible. There is no exact way to predict when your cycle resets, so it's pretty much a probability thing. So if you're going to nap, nap early. If you're waiting until after school you can pretty much forget it.

Exercising before you nap is also a bad idea. The whole benefit of WILD naps is that you can maintain your energy from being awake into the dream state. If you're exhausted your body will forget it's lucid goals and just fall asleep.

Well, thank you for pointing out that I was doing it completely wrong :) I have never heard about the 5 hour cycle thing, and the working out, so I'll be sure to put those into consideration next time.

I haven't achieved a full WILD yet, but I've tried the past week or so a few times. I've managed to get into pretty deep SP first thing in the night, but my mind was far too awake for me to fall asleep and I just woke up.

Last night though, I tried a WILD after I naturally woke up after my second sleep cycle. I got much deeper into SP, and saw HI behind my eyelids. I awoke because of my heart beating too fast and concentrating too hard. One thing I did notice was that I swallowed - a lot. I was trying to keep my head perfectly straight and it welled the saliva up in the back of my throat. I also get a dry mouth/nose when I try it, but if you just let your body swallow from reflex you'll be okay. I stopped having to swallow when I tilted my head slightly to the side, and thats when I got SP.

I'm close, but heck i'm just enjoying experiencing SP, it's bizzare!

Also, when SP hits, do something more interesting like visualizing a scene or reproducing the feeling of lucidity in a dream. By the way, you're supposed to lose count of your breaths. That's a sign that you're on the right track of getting in the dream state ( Just think it's awareness that makes you realize you lost count and continue from the last number you remember ) . Don't focus on one WILD technique because they work differently for each of us. During every WILD attempt, you should analyze the pattern that your body follows. If you get frustrated, you won't be able to realize the "mistakes" you're making ( or how your body is fooling you into falling asleep your consciousness ). And don't forget, it's only yourself you're dealing with :)

Had my first last night - i know what i did wrong and what i did right i guess. I got more detail on another thread in the newbie zone but ofc i need to refine my technique.

You're focusing too much on trying to do a WILD. WILDing is exactly the same as going to sleep normally, the only difference is that you're conscious through the process. How do you normally go to sleep? I bet you don't lie in your bed counting your breaths or do any of the other weird techniques people use. That would keep you up for hours, which is why so many people get bored and quit.

When you go to bed normally you don't concentrate on anything, you just let your thoughts wander on their own, and the HI (hypnotic imagery) will eventually form itself. All you need is a good consciousness anchor.

Well when I go to sleep normally, I move a lot and I itch a lot before I actually get comfortable enough to fall asleep. That's what I thought I should do, but all these tutorials say otherwise lol.

I'm going to have to suggest WBTB. I've had like 12 or 13 WILDs (I don't DJ anymore so I've lost count, good habit I shouldn't have broken) and all have been due to some form of WBTB. I'd say a good 1/2 of them are due to pure, simple wbtb, The others are due to DEILD and VILD, both subforms of WILD. The thing in common with all of these is that they all occurred sometime early in the morning. It's possible to WILD with naps, but WBTB simply makes it easier. I always felt as though my mind were in a different state when I would wake up in the morning to WBTB, much more attuned to the subconscious and LDing. If you WBTB, chances are even just by accident, one of the times you will at least get SP, if you try long enough. Getting into a dream after hitting SP can be very easy if you are a creative person. Many people don't know what to do and then SP wears off and they're either back asleep or still awake. What I always did in SP was imagine a vortex floating in the space near my feet or head. I would then get sucked into the vortex and then I'd be in my dream.

WBTB is also my main method of inducing lucid dreams, although I'm not sure whether I'm WILDing or DILDing when i do it :P
