Talk to someone in the dream. Congrats, you just talked to yourself, weirdo!
But if it's a dream did you technically say anything?
In the dreamworld with complete control of what is being said you chose to speak to a person.
I think that's close enough.
Yes but what is a sentient being technically? Are you talking to yourself or are the characters of your dream created by you, but branch off based on their own experiences?
I would like to know how shared dreaming is possible if the dream characters we speak to are just subconscious projections. And why is dreaming always localized to just the brain. Is it possible that dreaming is more then just a bodily function? Just a thought. Namaste.
You dont actually have "complete control of whats being said"
True you are talking to yourself, but not directly. Your subconscious is the one talking, and unless you know exactly what your subconscious is about to say, then its pretty much the same as talking to a stranger
dreamer95 has a point, because in waking life we push away our subconscious, after many years it can seem like your conscious mind and your subconscious mind are two entirely different people, comparable to your very bohemian roommate.
No, no no, this is a common misconception about the subconscious.
The subconscious is kind of like the low-level libraries of the language of the brain. It is the part that performs routine tasks such as rendering large scenes, gravity simulation, projectile projection, some parts of our creativity, random number generation, et cetera. We use the subconscious constantly by using our conscious mind:
Conscious mind -> High-level thought (aim for the basket) -> Subconscious mind -> Low-level instructions (lift hand to 45.23 degrees, push at 10 newtons) -> Action (throwing the basketball)
The subconscious renders dreams in non-lucids without the conscious mind:
Schema (sci-fi) -> Subconscious -> Dream (detailed rendering of world in 2020)
In lucids:
Conscious (lucid task of the month) -> Controlled schemas (throw a basketball on the moon) -> Subconscious -> Lucid dream
The subconscious is NOT another person. I have caught myself thinking for DCs during conversations. Neither is the subconscious somewhat more smart and more advanced than our conscious mind, nor should we worship our subconscious. Think about it: would a Hello World program worship stdio.h? It seems stupid!
DCs can have a personality different from that of you, because you can imagine a person with a different personality can't you? Here's a schematic diagram:
Non-lucid: Mafia thug schema (angry, bad accent) -> Subconscious (ya money uh ya life!) -> DC
Lucid: Conscious mind schema chooser -> Dream guide schema (reminds you to RC) -> Subconscious (shirt with 'RC' all over it, keep telling you to pinch your nose) -> DC
Technically interacting with anything in the dream is just interacting with yourself.
And yet unexpected things happen all the time in my lucid dreams.
Another strange thing is having sexual intercourse with another person or thing in a Lucid Dream is kind of like playing with yourself if you think about it.
I hate this thread you're ruining dreams for me :p
