Sleepwalking and Talking?
I have an interesting question.
For my whole life I have been a sleepwalker and a sleeptalker. My parents say that they can actually have small conversations with me while I am sleepwalking, and they have recorded me sleeptalking. Since sleep talking and walking are both a way of acting out your dreams, do you think its possible for me to talk to people outside of the dreamworld while I am having a lucid dream? Or even walk around while I'm sleeping - but still concious?

Actually, the term "Sleepwalking" is a misnomer. A person who is walking and talking is obviously not sleeping. The problem you have is that you're consciousness is not recording any memory, or, which is less likely, that your 'sleepwalking and talking' memories are being remembered by an Alter-Personality. When I was younger and would take an afternoon nap after getting home from school, I would often wake up and take care of phonecalls from friends, and small household chores without bothering to switch on my consciousn memory funtions. I would take care of whatever I needed to take care of and then return to bed. My Twin brother though, if aroused from a nap for a phone call or chore would begin shouting "Shut UP", quite like a madman, and he would not remember that later. So it may be that in my case, a more civilized and servile personality was taking over for my primary personality which was being allowed to enjoy its rest. In my Twin Brother's case, a hostile personality was taking over in order to aggressively defend the primary personalities rest.
Akin to this form of 'Sleepwalking and talking' is a drunk's blackout. Drunks still continue to function, after a fashion, but the primary personality has no subsequent memory. Often some personality changes are observed, but those observing simply attribute the changes to drunkeness. but it may be the case of Secondary Personalities getting out to have some fun and to try things that the primary personality, even drunk, would not dare to do.

There are different forms of sleepwalking/talking and in some the person in question is "obviously" sleeping. Anyway, I dont see any real reason to interact with the physical world while dreaming but the answer to your question is both yes and no. I know for fact that you can see, hear, and speak to things in the physical world while dreaming or lucid dreaming. In the past when I've fallen asleep with my eyes open I've been able to see both my physical and dream surroundings. Its a lot like looking through dirty glass, you can focus on the dirt or what's beyond it. Either way you will see both, its when they mix that there becomes a problem. If they mix its extremely hard to tell what's real and what's not so I wouldn't recommend believing anything you see. As for hearing and speaking I've found that the easiest way for me to control these functions from within a dream is with verbal commands. For me they are a side effect of becoming lucid so I turn them off but I dont see why you couldn't do the opposite.

I have been found by my father in the bathroom at three am, dressed for work and combing my hair, he's asked me what i'm doing, i tell him that i'm going to work, and he sends me back to bed!
I proceed to go back to my room, undress, and go back to sleep, remembering none of this the next morning.
I've also gone to bed in my room, and woken up the next morning in another part of the house. That is quite alarming.
My younger brother, about five years ago, began sleep walking, and made his way to an upstairs window. He told us quite solemnly that he was going to jump, as he knew he could fly.
Thankfully myself and the rest of my family managed to discourage this experiment!
we asked him about it the next morning, and he said, 'what are you talking about? don't be silly!'
so he remembered nothing!

Well, we find that your Alternate Personality is a respectable young lady who like to go to work. That is a good thing. Wondering around the house is a bit strange though. I guess you were raiding the refrigerator, finished your little snack, and then fell back to sleep in the closest chair or sofa available.

I think that mastering a connection between the dream world and reality would be nice. You could be aware of what is around you, but still have a great lucid dream. Discerning what is real and what is fake would take some practice, but doesn't almost everything? You should see the thread I posted in Beyond Dreaming. It was pretty nifty that I had that connection. I would like to know how to combine both of these two worlds. It would be nice to synergize them.

could be...and regarding raiding the fridge..i'm not sure...although there have been times when my parents have gone to the fridge for that tucked-away bar of chocolate, and it's gone, and oddly enough neither me or my brother can explain it! :)
good to know my alternate personality isn't a demon!

No way? This used to happen to me (according to my parents). I was in the lounge, putting on my clothes and my father came out - I could only imagine what he thought - and said "What the hell are you doing?". I replied "Getting ready for school". Then he said "go back to bed" and I did...It's weird ass. Sometimes I wonder if they were just lying because I can never remember a single thing.
I also used to speak in my dreams. In fact, I still do on the odd occasion. For some reason, about a month ago now, I shouted out "FUCK" at the top of my lungs. At three in the morning. Go me.

If someone wants to view reality I can see the pleasure in that, but actually walking around and communicating would serve no purpose other then bragging rights. If you think about it it becomes rather dangerous, you could lose your lucid state leaving your physical body like a rag doll crashing into the ground, another dream could take place and you decide to take a dive out of a third story window. When I first started to hear things from reality after becoming lucid I tried to stop it by putting an extreme amount of force into it. This did not have a big effect and it felt like I was burning energy that I didnt have, after this I started to use verbal commands and let my subconscious do the work. In my opinion it would take an outrageous amount of control to do this and maintain a lucid state. If you want to just lay around in your bed and view reality that's kewl, I've done it, I dont like the idea of walking around though.
Edit -- This sounds kinda sarcastic and mean now that I've read it, this was not my intent.

I see where you are worried and I see where there may be complications in combining both worlds, but I think it would be a good skill to be able to dream and walk around in reality. There are so many uses for it. I would want to be able to be lucid whenever I chose and still be able to pay attention to life. Finding a difference between the two would require a lot of practice, but the reward would be magnificent. If you could move yourself in reality and dream you could write down your dream as you are having it. You could communicate to others. It takes practice and yes there are a few risks to it, but why should you fear something that could with practice lead to some greater things. Just letting it go seems like a waste to me. I want to learn all I can about that. I don't know exactly the limits, but if I experienced them first hand I would know more about it and that is what is important to me. Even though it may take a lot of energy and control you will gain that over time.
I can see where you are coming from, but I don't want boundaries to stop my gaining of knowledge. Your post was not sarcastic or mean.
