Dreams Dictionaries

I was thinking DNA would carry all of the universalness, and that would cause people to have common understandings of common images. You raise a good point though, when you have a dream about a very specific thing that most people don't even know about, that would necessitate a self-interperetation.

Keeper of the Grove is right in saying I'm raising my point for the first time, that's why I started the thread, to have a discussion about this shit and hear some different opinions. And sorry Kaniaz for turning the thread into a "interperet Kaniaz's dreams" thread, I only did it because you specifically dared anyone to come up with non-vague interperetations of your dreams, so I did my best to argue my side.

Anyways, I think I finally see that self-interperetation is just as good or better than using a dream dictionary, because if you just think a little about how symbols relate back to your life than you can intuitively understand why you had the dream. ESPECIALLY I see how self-interperetation is better, because you could do it during an LD and heighten your dream up another dimension. Maybe those books are more for 10 year old girls to fuck around with at sleepovers, and that sort of thing. I'm a Meihers-Brigg "T", meaning I have very little intuitive understanding of feelings and that kind of stuff, so I guess that's why I never realized you could figure a dream's meaning out by stepping back and looking at the whole thing.

As for why I find dream interperetation valuable, I just find taking dream's messages keeps me on the beaten path, much like a buddhist finds spiritual guidance from the teachings of Buddha, or a hobo finds spiritual guidance from a mailbox.

I do still kind of think that there might be some neat thing about humans where they have a universal code of symbols though.

I took the same test, and I believe I am also a "T," but I have to say that those kinds of tests are not the best devices for self-definition. When I took my test I spent a considerable amount of time and simple questions because I was stumped. Questions such as, "Which is more important to you: emotions or logic?" really threw me for a loop. Why can't I choose both? They are both important and they both have profound impacts on my character. But I was only allowed to choose one. Furthermore, I've found that my character has changed profoundly as I've developed. I used to believe I was fairly unemotional (this is because my mother had drillied the concept into me), but I discovered that I'm just as emotional as anyone else, even though I value logic. Anyway, when I got my test back it basically told me I was a cold, heartless, materialistic bastard, which I disagree with. Though that may be an exaggeration, I chose to ignore the test results. I could have just as easily gone the other way, perhaps if I was in a different mood. Anyway, this digression is completely irrelevant, but just be careful not to create a self-identity based around a seemingly whimsical personality test--though I'm not suggesting you have done this.

I guess while I don't believe in coincidences, and do think dreams have deeper meanings, I think dream dictionaries and interpretations (by others at least) are more on the side of...well, amusement. Like, it's just fun to see what people say about certain things. Like horoscopes or tarot readings and stuff. It's sort of both serious and fun.

Does this make sense?

I had 2 use them for an assignment in one of my psychology courses. Mind u we had one full term on Dreams. My teacher made us use them for dream interpatation but i found them 2 be un helpful & really don't believe much of what they say.

I'm wondering if it's possible that you could be an example of what I kind of think to be true: that dream symbols are generally universal for people from similar cultures, who have been exposed to more or less the same basic things. Can you think of any examples of definitions that you didn't agree with? Were you reading a dream dictionary that was written somewhere other than Japan? Are you able to do good self-interpretations of your dreams?

I thought it would be fun too, but I tried that earlier in this thread with Kaniaz and failed miserably to predict anything at all about his character, even after looking at 4 dreams with simple and concrete symbols. I think self-analysis is much more fun than trying to analyze someone else's dreams, because you will learn a hundred times more about things that way. But yes, it certainly is fun to have someone tell you about yourself based on convoluded information. For that, you should definetly try a Meihers-Brigg test, which we were just talking about a few posts ago.

Most of them were from Japan, there may have been a few that weren't, but i couldn't tell u where they were from.
As far as the symbols, they were generally the same in all of them.
The thing that made me not believe them was it seemed the interpitation was a guess like something you would compare to meaning. Like mountain ment a challenge & for me it is common sense that if i saw this in my dream i would most likely already distinguish that w/o having 2 read it in a dream dictionary. But then again i have been interpiting dreams long before that class & already find myself really good @ it. So it may just be my point of view.
If u would like, i could give u some sites on dream interpitation that has symbols & such.

Well I had a dream last night that opend my eyes to something (rather private) but it only opend my eyes because I was looking for it too, its like I said earlier, if your looking for answers you can look at anything and find them, you just have to find the right thing to look at
