Was this my first LD?

Last night, I tried do have a MILD (first ever attempt for LD) and I think it worked!
In a dream, I was taking a shortcut flying over a lake and in the middle of a lake I thought to myself "hey, this would be perfect time for a dream". At that moment I felt the strongest rush of funny feeling and I knew that LD is coming. At the same time, my right hand lifted in front of me and fingers were all zig-zaggy and I'm sure there was more than 5 of them. I told to myself "It IS a dream" and thought about what I should do now that I'm in a dream and started to fly around, but everything was dark and could not see a thing. (The normal dream I was having was at night.) I kinda got disappointed and woke up. Was it really a LD if it was not vivid?

To be lucid you just need to be aware your dreaming, so well done that was your first lucid! ;)
Anything else, like clarity of dream, and amount of control is just advantages.
Sounds to me like you lost grip on the dream and got trapped in the void (that's what I call it).

Thanks Arch! I will check out the tutorial. I think I just got too excited and the realization that I'm lucid was so strong, that I woke up. I truly felt like I was in another dimension. I was also a little disappointed about not seeing vividly. Will do better next time:)

That's what it feels like to me, it's just great isn't it ;)
Don't worry about waking up though, it happens to everyone the first few times! Good luck!

By the way, not many new lucid dreamers realize this, but you are in total control of your dream.

That is as obvious as it sounds, but there is more to it.

In your case, you say that your dream was dark and you couldn't see anything. As simple as it sounds, all you need to do is think about everything being lit up, or turn on an imaginary light on an imaginary wall that YOU thought of in front of you.

Anything that is in your dream, the weather, the scene, the people, everything and anything is controlled by what you say and what you think.

Therefore, an easy way to sum up Dream Control and doing cool things is to simply "say these things, think about them, and totally believe they are going to happen."

If you want clarity, shout "clarity"! If you want something, think about it, and the next thing you know it will be there.

Thanks Arch and ClearView. I just read the Dream Stabilization tutorial, sounds simple, will try it tonight. Maybe I'll add something about dream being vivid and bright to my mantra.

I always think about that first lucid fondly. I can still picture it vividly and feel the same feeling as I did when I first realized that I'm dreaming. It was a DILD, first of many. They all had this "holy smokes I'm dreaming" shock and this surprise was so incredibly strong, even in my later DILDs.

That day, October 2, 2011, changed my life forever. I'm so incredibly grateful for finding out about lucid dreaming and for finding this forum, full of people ready to help.


Do you guys have a first post and memories of your "first time" you would like to share? Let's hear it!

Mine was kind of boring for a lucid dream :) I was in my parents kitchen sitting at the table and all of a sudden I knew it was a dream and everything just snapped into focus. I still remember marvelling at the paint on the wall, how it was REAL! It was only about 20 seconds or less of this when I woke up, but was exhilarated. That was maybe 20 years ago? Still chasing lucid dreams!

Haha, mine lasted only 5 seconds, but OMG! What glorious 5 seconds it was. I experienced sensations I had no idea existed. I flew and I actually felt like flying in waking life. Not that I can compare, haha.

You're right, it may have been more like 5 or at most 10 seconds :)

Can't be sure what my first post is here (the search function refuses to find it or half of my other old posts for some reason), but at the time I first joined I had already experienced LDs for much of my life, going back far enough that I really don't know for sure what my first one was. They were rare, though, and I never realized their full potential, so I didn't get into them a whole lot. But this forum definitely started my biggest interest and effort at the time in exploring LDs when I came across it in 2005. (Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly what prompted me to visit in the first place.) The biggest memory I have was learning for the first time that it was possible to be conscious during non-dream sleep (as in WILD). This alone was pretty intriguing to me. The really weird thing is that the very night I read that it was a thing, I happened to get my own quick glimpse of conscious NREM by accident while trying to fall asleep, and ever since then to this day I have episodes of it from time to time, which I always take advantage of.

Anyway, for a couple of years, a bunch of cool things happened, but eventually I fell into a lull period through 2008 up until late 2014 where my focus shifted to other things and LDing dropped to a lower priority. I still did some of it but at a very slow pace compared to my initial peak (though it was still higher than before then in my life). Then I finally started wondering why I felt like I hadn't accomplished anything with my LDs after all those years and decided I needed to readjust my priorities. I hadn't visited DV in ages and decided maybe I could come back and see if I could find a couple of new hints or strategies I could try.

Well, I got a lot more than I bargained for. ;) I found Sageous, his classes, a bunch of other people with some really awesome, thought-provoking perspectives I had never considered before (there's unfortunately no way for me to remember and name everyone), things about self-awareness, meditation, all kinds of stuff I never knew about or considered, and I learned for the first time that it had important applications to issues in my waking life, not just LDing. So in a way, I feel I only really got started just a couple of years ago when I came back to DV, and this time I've made up my mind that this is a journey I'll be staying on permanently. Right now I'm in the middle of my biggest, most active LD peak yet, and I believe the most exciting things are yet to come.

My very first lucid dream was the one where I didn't know about it at all. I was a kid, having a nightmare about being captured by pirates; then I realized I had been in this scene before and it was a dream! So I proceeded to heroically fight off all the pirates and escape. Years later someone told me about lucid dreaming, I looked it up and found this site. From then on, it has been a life goal to master this art. However, motivational issues stood in the way multiple times and I couldn't get consistent with this for more than a few weeks.
Now, however, I am older and have recently had some small revelations about motivation and dedication and I think I'm ready to give this a final, permanent try :)
Without DV, I would have forgotten about this years ago.
