Stupid morning brain
So, I woke up at 2:30 this morning and WILD after 15 minutes. I did it for a while. I saw a scene of two teenagers on a swing, and I could hear birds. I'm fairly certain that I wasn't dreaming yet, so I'm assuming these were hypnagogic. I decided to test it, and tried to move. Stupid morning brain. I forgot that I can't go into SP when WILDing. I never have been able to. So I move, the sounds go away and there's a half hour down the drain, and once I fail once, until I sleep some more it wont work again. So my question: How often does it happen that someone can't SP in a WILD? I go into it later in the night I'm sure, but never in WILDs.

2:30 is probably way too early to WILD with WBTB. Depending on when you go to sleep.
You should get at least 4 and a half hours of sleep first. Sometimes 6 is best.
Find out when your REM starts, and wake up just before it. So you'll easily go straight in to a dream.
You don't have to actually feel the SP. Every time I've WILDed I have not felt SP at all, or even hypnagogic images. Just straight in to the dream.
In fact, whenever I've felt SP, those are the times when I end up not being able to even enter the dream lol

Most of us go into SP at the same time as dreaming, I don't think you should be aiming to be in SP, more to fall asleep and remain concious. On another note, you did well you probably were viewing some HH or the dream was forming, either are signs that you will soon be dreaming, so
- stay still
- relax
- don't think too much
Good luck!
