Lucid Dreaming 1-3x per day

Hi everyone, i'm sure no one remembers me, I join this forum a long time ago in attempt lucid dreaming, I tried for a long time but then school began and I gave up.

Anyways, recently I began Polyphasic sleeping, for those who don't know what this is it involves you sleeping for short periods of time so you have more time awake without sleep deprivation or fatigue. My sleep schedule consists of one 3h core sleep and three 20 min naps throughout the day.

Now every time I take a nap I go lucid, without even trying, also I have perfect dream recall. Seriously, I don't even try to go lucid it just happens. I go lucid in almost every naps, I love it!

How successful were you with becoming lucid before doing polyphasic sleeping?

I was a complete failure, I couldnt lucid before doing polyphasic sleeping.

Nice, glad it's working for you! :) I don't think I could ever justify getting in to that type of sleep regime with my lifestyle.

Do you feel tired all day while sleeping so little?

what,3 hours :shock:,yesterday i slept 6 hours and i ended up having a headache,a REALLY BAD HEADACHE.

Anyway, it must be due to the REM cycles becoming longer due to the little sleep, but 4 hours is too little for most people, think the range of 6-hours sleep is better, but don't know how that would work really.

I envy you. I used to be polyphasic, and the dreams were absolutely mind-blowing. Like you, I was lucid at almost every nap. I would slip directly into a dream, seconds after I closed my eyes. It was like a switch I could just flip at any moment.

I am a firm believer in naps. I think napping throughout the day is the way were are supposed to sleep. Unfortunately, it does not work with my current lifestyle, so I had to give it up. Enjoy your amazing dreams :)

I don't understand the term "napping" it's sleeping in daytime for around 1 hour?

Correct

I'm pretty sure LDs can be more common during polyphasic sleep because one enters REM almost immediately, cutting out all the lighter and less beneficial parts of sleep. This is also why someone can still feel rested, because they're still getting the most important part of their sleep cycle, just omitting the less useful parts. I'm glad to see you've had success with it; now I want to try it out but I don't know how I'll do it with a 9-5 job.

What was your sleep schedule like, RB?

People who use this technique enter Lucid dreams for a few reasons actually.

1. In a way they are sleep deprived, so when they sleep their minds "catch up" on the lost sleep and go into REM much MUCH faster.

2. Because they are most likely tired (even if they don't feel tired, their mind is) they fall asleep much faster as well.

3. Because they are falling asleep so fast their mind doesn't have the proper amount of time to become fully unconscious thus raising the probability of having a LD.

Nice. I have around that many lucids every night too. It started when I was a little kid. I was so intrigued by the dreams I had so I kept thinking about them throughout the day. Later on I found that I had gained the ability to go to sleep and become lucid, just like that.

I don't know too much about polyphasic sleeping. I'm glad it works for you but it doesn't float my boat.

All the polyphasic success is good to hear! My brother successfully adapted to everyman (a mild form of polyphasic sleep - actually it sounds exactly like the type you're doing). And he had similar things to say about the dreaming. He's no lucid dreamer though, I've offered to teach him but he just doesn't seem to care enough. He had to quit because of university (the reason I never started), and we guaranteed that we'd try everyman or uberman in the Summer, when our schedules are more flexible and when we're not living on separate ends of the continent (Vancouver/Halifax). Recently I've started having naps everyday (I compromise by working harder/more efficiently from the extra energy at night) and I've noticed that I have really great, vivid dreams each time. I'm going to try to see if I can get good results form just these naps. Probably a pretty good way to practice WILDs (if only the construction across the street would end...)!

I'm going triphasic or everyman in april so this sounds awesome!

How do you sleep 3 times during a day? I cant even fall asleep one time during the day and if I do, I have ot lie there for like.. 1.5 hours and then i might fall asleep. so it would never be 20 min naps for me :( any tips for falling asleep during day? I do get very relaxed. but cant fall asleep.

I can have the same problem daban, but when you are awake for such periods of time you would crash pretty easy I assume, unless you have some severe insomnia or such. I usually take ages to fall asleep at night, I 'll let you know how staying awake to 5:30 and then falling asleep goes.

And do you look awake? Are you still sane? How long have you been doing this for?

I hear that everyone who's started this inevitably fails further along the line when the apparent sleep deprivation has real effects on the body. Either way, I applaud you for actually trying it rather than criticizing it from your armchair......like I do. ;p

After posting that, it makes me want to try it for at least a week. The main thing I'd want to test is:

Cognitive reasoning ability throughout the process
Reaction time to stimuli
My patience (emotional state)
Memory
Verbal ability

Lumosity would be a decent place to test and maintain that information.

If you can take one of those naps during your lunch break, is there any reason this can't fit around a 9-5 lifestyle?

Napping for 20 minutes every 4 hours was it?

So you nap before you come into work.
Then 4 hours later, you nap at lunch time.
And then nap again when you return home from work.

The rest, you can alter around with, no? And your core can take place sometime during the night.

20 min nap every 4 hours (uberman)
30 min naps every 6 hours (dymaxion) don't know anyone who has even done this though
Everyman,2/3/4,5 etc. 1 core sleep at night from 1.5 to 4.5 hours plus a set amount of twenty minute naps, most common is everyman 3 so a 3 hour core sleep at night and three twenty minute naps throughout the day.

Thought lunch breaks typically lasted an hour. Should be fine.....unless you travel the seven seas to go fetch your lunch.

I've looked at the website, trypolyphasic, and I think I may give the SPAMAYL a go.....given its extreme flexibility. And I can see many have adapted to a decent amount of varying naps per night.

Yeah, SPAMAYL is another good one. You end up sleeping a lot more than say Uberman but it's good for flexibility.

Yeah, though the main reason I'm choosing this method is because it seems more long-term sustainable. The others with fixed times would appear to become difficult when your lifestyle changes, or when a 'freak' event clashes with your routine.

I just have one question: how do you start a routine? Do I stay awake for a whole day so that napping will be easy, or attempt to nap now for 20 minutes or what?

Well, you can read up on naptation or go 24 hours without sleeping before hand but not sure how verifiable that one is. Naptation has worked though, or you could just jump into trying to nap, even if you can't fall asleep. I tried at afternoon sleep and failed and did night ones, hopefully today I will be able to.

I'm on the 24 hours of wakefulness now to act as a stressor necessary for the onset of physiological adaptation. I'm gonna be fked tomorrow.

I'm a graduated student who's currently unemployed and basically play video games all day. I'd love to try this but got a couple of problems:

- I sleep A LOT and I have the biggest trouble getting up in the morning. I average 10-11 hours a night then stay up for like 14-15 hours. This results in me having 24-26 hours in a day, once every 2 weeks when things get out of hand I pull an allnighter to "get back in a normal living schedule".
I know some people sleep 5-6 hours a night and manage fine, which is just something that would break me.

- The only thing I'm passionate about besides computer games (and lucid dreaming :p) is fitness, which I do every weekday for an hour. I've been making good progress and don't wanna ruin it. Does this sleeping schedule still allow you to do sports every day, or is this going to have a negative impact?

I know common sense would say this is nothing for me, but I have read into this a few years ago and vaguely remember that it's actually just as effective as a normal nights' sleep.

From what I know, fitness is fine for the most part but during adaptation you might not wanna go extreme, one hour a day doesn't seem too drastic. If you need more sleep than average you can try and make each segment of sleep a bit longer. 25 min instead of 20 etc. You're probably perfectly suited for it heh.

Is it really possible to just make the naps a little longer? I'm not an expert at all, but with those cycles and whatnot I'd imagine that the length of each nap is not just some random amount.

I'm no pro, as I'm just beginning now. Literally. But, as far as I'm aware:

+Polyphasic sleeping allows you to have less sleep and feel the same benefits and more as you would on a monophasic pattern of more sleep.
+Increases your chance of having lucid dreams given the naps are mostly REM, and you will begin to fall into them within 1 minute.
+I think during adapting that you may need to lessen or put the exercise on hold until you stabilise your schedule. From what I read, there were people doing 5-6 miles of running and simultaneously training for rock climbing, and some others lifting heavy weights 3-4 times a week with no problem after adaptation.
+There are many different schedules, so I'm sure there'll be one that fits your lifestyle.

1. Some people report increased benefits compared to mono but that could be from a poor monophasic style
2. Not too sure on whether it does increase lucids or not but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. Probably very dependent on person
3. Probably right
4. Hopefully, unless you are really busy.

Zeal, it basically condenses a sleep cycle into a smaller amount of time, so it doesn't have to be exact and may need to be longer or shorter for some. Twenty five minutes is usually suggested over twenty for uberman but you can experiment with normal times and see how you feel. Slowly increase if you still feel tired after adapting etc.

I just figured that if worse comes to worse, and I end up sleep deprived. Then at least I'll get a mass of lucid or vivid dreams.

Worth a shot! I actually feel pretty good considered I slept 90+60+90 minutes over last night and a bit this morning.

Ah, 10:30 sleep nothing, 5:30 sleep I got woken up out of a dream from the alarm. Not enough to say yet, I'll blog about it if i notice anything or let you know.

Hmm, this is the first I've heard of this and its piqued my curiosity. For those who have already tried this and have been at it for a while, does it affect your thinking negatively in any way? I want to start trying this given that I have the schedule to be able to, but I am taking some rather difficult classes at a university and I wouldn't want it to have a negative impact on my grades.

Also, I'm sure you have to do something so your body can get use to it and start to naturally wake up after every short nap no? Do you use an alarm to wake yourself up for the first couple days?

Perhaps I'll start trying today and post my results in a few days, since I am on spring break.

Definitely will have a bad impact on school, that's why I'm adapting to it in the school holidays. I was getting into 'zombie mode' last night and a bit and didn't want to process the information a youtube video gave me.

Well, difficult to say really. During the 24hrs of deprivation, and before, I tested my short-term memory, awareness, response time, and reasoning speed in maths on lumosity games. Obviously, this isn't a reliable method of testing due to random variation in ability, but during deprivation..

1. My short-term memory was better (I think because the objects on screen left after-effects more so - I could see the objects in position, even after they disappeared).
2. Awareness remained relatively unchanged, slight improvement (again, the objects that appeared in random areas of the screens left greater impressions, and so appeared to 'fade out' rather than instantly disappear).
3. lol - response time was much worse.
4. Quickness at solving basic sums was severely affected unless it was merely a matter of pure recall.

Of course, this is the stage required that precedes the onset of adjustment to the routine: literally, 24hrs of wakefulness. Not surprised tbh.

Awesome! I've just recently started the uberman schedule.

I have also been thinking about this, but there are some things that concern me.
I am 15 years old, meaning that i am still growing. I have read that the development horomones are produced while sleeping, so I suspect sleeping 6 hours less than before will disturb my developing. Maybe the body adapts to the schedule and produces the same ammount of hormones anyway? I do not know, scince I have not been able to find anyone my age who has done this before. Maybe trying this at my age is just stupid? If anyone has, please tell me.
Also, there is the obvious question of permanent damage in case of failure to adapt to the schedule. This doesn't worry me too much, scince i belive most of the effects of sleep deprivation go away with good sleep.

I am aiming for the first month of the holidays, with the uberman schedule.

Well, I know that everyman+2 naps is very unpopular. So either triphasic like myself or everyman+3 naps. Or biphasic is usually easier for people.

I'm still doing this SPAMAYL and feel varying amounts of wakefulness and tiredness. Though I can't 'fall' into naps so easily, so it's quite difficult to nap (20mins) about 10 times a day.

Yeah, I'm stopping triphasic for a while actually. I might look into something else as SPAMAYL (still think Freeman is a better name) or an alternate one to that. One with more flexibility I would say.

I think the concept works nicely because you sleep whenever your body feel likes it, but you train it to adapt by only allowing 20 minute naps. So you get adaptation and great flexibility. The only problem seems to be when you need a block of 7 hours of wakefulness....a couple of 20 minute naps preceding that block doesn't seem like it'd cut it.

I think it can cut it but not often. I have school for 8 hours (7-3) I need to be awake during all of that so it can be tough. Might have to settle for biphasic but don't want to.

How about a modified Spam Mail, where you have a 3 hour core preceding that 8 hour block, and then anything after that stays in accord with 'napping when you wish'?

That actually sounds pretty good. Similar to everyman but more flexible.

Although, do you think 3 hour sleep could get me through 8 hours?

So its basically what was said before.
I have work from 8-16. So I get my core sleep before that, which would be 3:30-6:30. Additionally... I take a nap just after work, in the evening (around 20) and at the midnight.

That way I'd have my chances with lucidity around the nap times.

I think you couldn't do it with that big a time gap. 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM is 10 hours gap. Far too big for anything except biphasic. Can you do a 20 min nap at work? If not sorry. I doubt you could. Maybe everyman 2?

Hmm yeah.. World would be cooler if everyone were polyphasic like cats xD

There's a 30 minute lunch break in the middle... But it would be rather difficult to consistently crawl somewhere to sleep during that time though.

heck... I'll do everyman 2, hmm I wish I'd have shorter workdays.

Just a note, everyman 2 is good for work and such but it adds upto 5.2 hours of sleep which is not much less than biphasic totalling at 6 hours. I also believe biphasic is 1000 times easier to adapt to than everyman 2 which can take a month to fully adapt to. That's just what I've heard. You could do a 4.5 hour core before work and 1.5 hour core sometime after it.
