      Hold your breath

I'm wondering, does controlling your breathing in your lucid dream affect how your physical body breath? For example, you hold your breath in the dream and you actually do hold your breath in real life (as with eye movement in the dream being reflected in your waking world body).

Yes, I think that Lucid Dream researchers have used breathing patterns as a signal that the Lucid State has been achieved. Easy enough to give a signal -- if you become Lucid, then take two deep breaths followed by four rapid breaths followed by two deep breaths.

Interesting. I know that breathing patterns are related very much to sleep and dreaming. If you hold your breath in a lucid dream do you really stop breathing physically?

I'm pretty sure nobody has ever killed themselves simply by holding their breath (being suffocated by a plastic bag or something doesn't count). You may be able to hold your breath long enough to lose consciousness, but then your autonomic nervous system would take over and begin breathing again.

Good, then I can take advantage of this connection in demonstrating the existence of lucid dreaming to some people around me who are skeptical of it. Though I need to learn how to have LDs at will first and get an audio recorder...

You can never kill yourself if you don't really want to. And since you are mostly unconcious while dream (even LD) and your unconcious never wnat to die, I believe that to be impossilbe, or highly unlikely at least

I hope you realize they'll just tell you you made all that stuff up. You have to run a test with lab instruments that prove that you're actually asleep, combined with the breathing (or eye movements) for your friends to buy it.
