If there is any question about it, you were not lucid. It is an experience you cannot mistake anything else for.
You are also right but sometimes it's hard for people to tell what you are saying. I do have dreams about me being aware when I am not, and stuff like that, but for newbies who have yet to have a real lucid dream it is harder to tell.
Ya, I agree with Aeolus. If you are aware that you are dreaming then it’s a lucid dream. But newbies who don’t have any knowledge about lucid dreams it is harder to tell.

Lucid dream vs. non lucid dream is a dichotomy which, while useful in many regards, can clearly cause confusion. Lucidity (clearness of thought) within the context of a dream is actually comprised of multiple realizations. If a person is aware to some extent that they are dreaming then the dream is usually considered lucid. Yet someone can realize that they are dreaming in a vague sense, without realizing any of the implications of their lucidity. For example, someone might know that they are in a dream, but still be afraid of bodily harm. Someone might think that dream characters are real people, or that they must still follow societal rules.
With this being said, I disagree with the categorization of lucid dreams into tiers of lucidity. Someone could be extremely self aware, recognize the lack of consequences for their actions, but still abide to some insane dream-logic.
I might be misunderstanding you, but not all lucid dreams are so spectacular. You might argue that no true scotsman (lucid dream) could be vague and hazy, but utilizing the generally accepted definition of lucid dream (a dream where one is aware that they are dreaming), people certainly can have hazy, non-distinct lucid dreams.Quote:

Of course lucid dreams are far more likely to be vivid and amazing, but most of the time when people make threads asking whether they were lucid or not, they just vaguely recognized that they were dreaming and woke up almost immediately. I can see how this would be confusing for newbies when people are constantly talking in generalizations about how vivid lucid dreams tend to be.
