Is Lucid dreaming a special thing for people to obtain?

Can all people do it? I've been able to do it for as long as I remember. I am 19 now, and have complete control over my lucid dreams when I become lucid. I feel like it lasts hours without waking. This of course built up, but I did this as a child.

I ask this as I had a rather intense lucid dream last night that made me question a lot of things I am doing in my waking life, and happened to stumble upon this site whilst googling.

I do not always become lucid, but when I do (every one or two weeks) I have dreams that are so real and intense that when I wake all I can think about is the dream. I seem to have some kind of strange respect in this dream world though, i've tried spawning random objects, and changing things at my will, which I can always seem to do, but it seems to ruin the meaning and plot of certain dreams. I much prefer to remain lucid and keep things going as I would in real life, to see what happens and learn from these experiences.

I've talked to maybe one other person who says they lucid dream, but whom doesn't seem to the extent I do. I just wondered if this is a gift i've until now taken for advantage.

One last thing, I get a pure craving for lucid dreaming. I get it sometimes midday, really wanting a lucid dream that night. Is this a healthy thought?

I read about dream spinning on this forum, and it sounds like an interesting concept I shall try next time I go lucid.

      Thankyou for your time x

Yes, anybody can lucid dream but for most it takes a lot of practice and dedication. Most people have had a lucid dream before, often as a child, and once you explain to them what it is they'll likely think of a time they had one. Those who can do it easily and with little to no effort are what we like to call naturals. They simply do everything with ease and never really have to put in the work for it like most people.

The craving for a lucid dream is perfectly normal. The though of doing whatever you want with no consequence whatsoever can seem very appealing and sometimes you may just really want one. It's similar to suddenly getting a food craving, you really want that food and just think about it all day. They're completely fine and aren't harmful in anyway.

If you have any questions related to how to increase how many lucid dreams you have or on various techniques/ideas feel free to ask.

Im on the same boat as you, tyrexas. I have the same cravings to lucid dream. I think thats what is keeping me motivated. I want to become a master lucid dreamer and have lucids every single night so i can experience this wonderful land of your imagination. Its quite exhilarating, though i have not been getting much luck with long and vivid lucids recently. Im jealous of you. Theres nothing like having a long, clear, exiting lucid dream. To answer your question, yes, everyone can lucid dream, though it takes different techniques and practice time for every individual. Since your already a natural, what you can do now is practice different techniques so you can gain the ability to have lucid dreams every night, since it will be rather easy for you. Good luck!

Sometimes, particularly on this forum, people forget how precious the art of lucid dreaming is. I'd say yes, it's definitely special. You'd be surprised how few people do it, let alone even recall any of their dreams. People are so wrapped up in the dramas of the waking world that they don't even let themselves be open to a new world upon falling asleep.

It's great that you're a natural, and I can definitely relate to your feeling of waking up and being in awe of the dream. I call this a "fully conscious" lucid dream. I've only had a handful of these experiences amongst all my other lucid dreams, my last being about 3 weeks ago, but I cherish them. Most times I wake up and I can't help but to just laugh out of pure joy.

The craving isn't an issue, as Burke explained. In fact, I think it's good to crave it. "Stay hungry, stay foolish."

The best reason for having dreams is that in dreams no reasons are necessary.

No sailor controls the sea. Only a foolish sailor would say such a thing. Similarly, no lucid dreamer controls the dream.
Like a sailor on the sea, we lucid dreamers direct our perceptual awareness within the larger state of dreaming.

Thanks for all the quick replies =] I always thought I just had a strange obsession with dreaming untill I read this forum, nice to hear other peoples experiences etc. I'm reading some of the posts on here and am going to try and see if I can increase the frequency of my lucid dreams by doing so. I feel like if I could have them more often I could spend some just having fun, flying etc; wheras now they seem to precious not to follow in a rather mundane way, as they ussually allow me to consciously think about my waking life whilst asleep.

      Thanks again all x

I don't think you need to be special to lucid dream, but I do believe you need to be special to be open to the possibility. It seems like most people don't really "get" the potential of lucid dreaming.

I 100% agree with you cmind. I got everyone of my friends to lucid dream, and they all think its amazing. However, i have this one friend who refuses to even consider trying because he "likes his sleep". Its sad how much he's missing out and he doesn't even know.

Ahh, it seems that is more the issue then, i've told friends what its like and that they should try it, but all but the one I said already has them seems to look at you like a crackpot.

It must be that each individual can achieve them, yet they must want to, or at least believe in its positive effects.
