I am a newbie, and I had a nightmare and woke myself up. How do I NOT wake myself up when I become lucid in a dream?
it says on this website that dream spinning helps so maybe you could try that.
personally what stops me waking up is taking a deep breath and thinking of a solution to the nightmare. by focusing that hard on the situation i think that's what keeps me in the dream.
You don't get it. I wake up the second im lucid. Any way to fix that?
You got a nice answer from Squiddly, no need to get snippy. You may find more info in this tutorial and others in DV Wiki.
Have you had multiple LDs in which you've woken up straight away, or have you only had your first so far?
If you've only had one, that could be just a first-LD problem. In my first lucid dream, I got that "rush" of becoming lucid, which caused the dream to become unstable; I woke up about 10-20 seconds later. In my next one, I didn't get that same rush of excitement; it was more like, "Oh, cool, I'm dreaming." It was a pretty stable dream, lasting perhaps a couple minutes before I got bored (from a lack of control over the dream environment, as well as not being able to remember my goals) and decided to wake up.
So, yes, if it's just your first, that issue probably won't arise next time.
I had a lot of LD's where I woke up as soon as I realized I was dreaming. For me, it went away naturally as I became more used to the idea of being aware while dreaming. That rush, if your experience is the same as mine was, that wakes you up goes away on its own with practice.
Sorry squiddy. I just almost did a wild though! And also, I'm talking about nightmares where the fear instantly wakes me up. Does that go away? Because I hope so. I rarely have one. I'd thought that I would be able to NOT wake myself up since I heard about lucid dreaming.
If you have a problem with waking up from nightmares and want to use that as an opportunity for lucid dreaming, you can try getting in the habit of making reality checks WHEN you feel fear (any kind of fear, like fear of getting a bad mark in a test). Also, if you realize that you are, in fact, dreaming, try focusing on your environment and on your senses. I don't know how much how you understand from what I said, I know how it is to be a newbie, I'm not a 'pro' either :) As squiddly said you can also try to spin, but that means you have some amount of control, which you may not have, especially in a nightmare.
You need a lot of practise to confront fears in your dreams, yet sometimes there are dreams that you "know" you have to wake from. I know you didn't want to wake up but sometimes your brain kicks you out before you decide on anything which is called the survival sense.
I had a dream that was creepy but i just had to wake myself up because i knew that certain character was going to do something.
But all in all, practise makes perfect and whenever you face something scary, remind yourself that you wake up too many times and this time it's time to confront.
You need to try and keep calm before you sleep, perhaps meditate for 10-15 minutes and clear your head of any irrational thoughts. Then, while you fall asleep try chanting something in your head like "The fear is not real". That could possibly stop you from waking up as soon as you have a nightmare. Then you can use this nightmare to become lucid and confront your fears. It's a long shot but it could just work ^.^
Thanks Ara. I rarely have nightmares, so I plan to get lucid sometime and just ask what happened, if I can stay lucid.
mancon, a little off topic but would you happen to know how to morph in dreams?
