Here are the Results of the Survey one day before I said I would publish them, but that is because I am atm ill, and dunno how I will feel tomorrow maybe worse and than I would definietly not come out of my bed ;p Anyway, first of all here is the full Summary, and after it I tried to analyze if there maybe is an connection between what Technique is being used and the success rate, sadly I did not include many interesting questions because I simply did not thought about them before I created the survey maybe next time. Anyway, here it is now, enjoy :) For some questions I also included piecharts, just because I can.
Ps: Be aware of that I removed all the ones who have answered simply "No" or "None" or misunderstood the question in the "Other (specifiy)" box, sorry that I forgot to include a No/None option by some of the questions and for the misunderstandings if my english was to bad to clarify the question. (Also the ones that just asked if I am a stupid billy for forgetting to include the "No." option, I removed :P)
Sometimes I enjoy nightmares, so I create them while Lucid. I'd say Sometimes.
I have them under control
The nightmares fear me :)
Very rarely
Anything that starts to look like a nightmare is always turned around. So I never get scared. For instance: I find a bathroom in the grocery store and there is bloocy carcasses everywhere. I begin to freak out for a second with the "Something is soooo off with this" thought, but then I think "Oh, their meat section must just be in the bathroom. I look around and see a butcher.
Menthol, St. John's wort, piracetam, damiana, salvia, vitamin C, zinc
I use the aids naturally, when we fall asleep we decrease the activity of some parts of the brain that governs critical thinking for example, but if I wake myself up the activity increase and thereby an increase of the activity of that system. But no external aids only naturaly induced ways.
Binaural Beats and/or cheese
Tried calea, but don't use it on a regular basis.
Sometimes I use peppermint tea for the menthol or st johns wort.
I take a dietary/weightlifting supplement daily (not for dreaming,) but it makes my dreams a lot more vivid. Yohimbine HCL.
damiana, sandalwood
I have used Melatonin and b6/b12, but only a few times. never on a solid basis.
I refer to my sleeping patern I had as a kid, snoozing within my conscious thought rather than slipping into perfect darkness.
Just started site and am learning the different things here. But as for dreaming tech.'s I know when something is not real and that is when I control my dream.
There are only two technique: WILD and DILD the rest is just a variation or a method of that technique. II set my intention each day actively and passively (MILD), I try to fall asleep consciously each night (WILD), I occasionaly get lucid in my dreams (DILD, I chain my dreams if I wake up from one (DEILD), I WBTB each night, I meditate and are aware of myself during the day and as much as I can during my sleep (ADA). So to just use one method is to district one self.
Watched Inception, read about it on the net, came to know Lucid Dreaming, watched a video on worldofluciddreaming.com,was completely mesmerized by it,then explored it more, got to know how beneficial it can be for self exploration and improving the waking life,so started learning it
I had one and then really wanted to have more that's about it
Friend told me about it, and was interested.
No specific reason. It just happens sometimes. Sometimes I try to force it, but it seems to work better when left to occur naturally.
I had my first lucid dream by accident and I already had control in it, so one day I decided to look more into it and found out that it was possible to make it happen on purpose. The main reason I wanted to get into it is because it makes me feel free.
They sort of started me.
to have fun doing impossible things and to try to learn more things about myself spiritually/self consciously. Also, I used to use a DJ nightly for any type of dream, but i started to not need one because my recall is very good naturally now (that's why I marked it as no)
Because my real life sucks.
To do exciting things I couldn't do in real life. To really get inside of my mind and to learn more about myself and see what I was capable of.
I found out about it on the Minecraft Forums, and someone had posted a link to dreamviews, so I decided to head over and check it out! It seemed very intriguing. I really wanted to do things that weren't possibly in the waking world though. Unfortunately, I sort of didn't think about it throughout the entire summer until now.
Interested in the concept.
To explore my mind!
I wanted to learn how to control my dreams
It's fun as hell and extremely interesting to be asleep and awake at the same time. Makes me wonder how it is possible.
Just started happening
Happened to me without trying and I've pursued continuing it ever since.
Reality is boring and I'm choked for time in the day so why not have fun in the night ;)
Because I dream every day anyways. Might as well live longer. :)
Because it interests me. I want to know how it feels being in the dream world.
The idea to be in your own mind. and for fun.
Escaping reality, a lucid dream combined with DC is the perfect illusion.
Mainly to fly, it seemed like a fun thing to do. Wanting to do bending of elements was also a big target because I'm a fan of Avatar.
A friend linked me to Dreamviews and I thought it was amazing.
The answer is simple - i wanted to push my mind to its highest capacity and get an edge on everyone around me by mastering skills and learning things in new ways. Also, i wanted to have a little unorthodox fun :p
I thought it sounded fun and interesting, and I wanted to try it.
The experiences it can offer is limitless. I feel that it is also quite significant.
I started lucid dreaming because it had an opportunity to do things I would never be able to do and lean things I might never of had the opportunity to learn.
out of interest, to be able to do anything otherwise impossible
Lucid Dreaming just sounds so interesting and awesome. It's a free world where you could do anything, I mean by, anything.
Self Discovery.
Honestly, it just sounded like a fun time... heh.
At first I just though it would be really cool to mess around in a world of my own and do what I want, but now I really want to use it as a means to access my subconscious at will.
To have fun and discovering things, mostly.
entertainment and self-exploration
answers
Lucid dreaming is the power to do ANYTHING, ANYWHERE with ANYTHING or ANYONE, and all of it feels even better than it would in waking life. I always wished for finding something like this, and I do not think there is anything better than lucid dreaming in the entire world.
To be able to have a sensevof freedom, therapy for mental health, and escapism.
to stop nightmares, and because its fun!
Fun
To have fun and explore boundless imagination.
Purely out of interest. Just wanted to see what it was like.
It's insane
To learn a new skill and because its a fun mental challenge.
Curiosity.
To proof to myself that it's possible. Once I got a glimpse of it I then continue it to explore the possibilities.
I'm a natural. It just happened when I was little and thought everyone can do it.
Just as a way to escape reality.
because i never even remembered dreams before, and i wanted to learn more about myself
To do what I want.
Read about in online, before it was cool ;)
The reason why I started lucid dreaming is because it is a powerful gateway to the inner self. I can talk and interact directly with my subconscious self. Not only that but it is very interesting and fulfilling when I achieve lucidity in a dream
For escapism, a world of my own which nobody else can touch
To have fun!
Freedom of doing whatever I want without anything being able to restrict me.
I started lucid dreaming once I heard of the amazing things that can be done in one. I wanted to test the limits of our brain and what exactly we are capable of doing.
Seemed interesting
It sounded something I would definitely be interested in.
Just for fun.
I have always been fascinated with dreaming and I am freaking good at all visualizing. I have always had a dream or two a night, so when I first heard about it I had to do it.
Intellectual growth.
it sounded fun
To get away from real life problems maybe...and because its fun!
I got really interested into dreaming in general and lucid dreaming is just apart of the process!
Discover my innerself.
Seemed fun
To explore the possibilities
I did it as a young child have been doing it all my life.
For enjoyment.
Infinite possibilities
To Learn more about myself and to master my mind.
For pure fun.
I started to lucid dream because I wanted to have a experiences like that I've never had before. We're asleep for eight hours atleast a night why not spend it having fun in another land.
Beause I found it interesting? -_-
It all begin with me being a skeptical and western minded, atheist raised child but then I watched the matrix and got interested in philosophy. I also started to become paranoid because I realized that one can be skeptical to existence itself. I then learned to understand facts and truths doesn't exist. Only opinions does and instead I started to learn by expeirence that what really is the most plausible idea of truth is your own experience in a scientific approach. Don't accept an OBE experience because it is experienced, accept it because the experience provide you with plausible proof and also that it can be repeated. Also if you wonder who I am, my nick is MasterMind on the forum.
I got some of them already as kid because of nightmares and later in my teenage years "discovered" about lucid dreaming and bought "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming". The possibilities are unlimited, you're truely free in your dream world, you can be creative, practice things, travel etc. That got me interested.
It seemed interesting, and the fact that there is no limit to what you can do is amazing.
in the beginning, just to have fun in a world of my own imagination and experience complete freedom. I'm trying now-a-days to experiment with it a little more. I'm working on mastering dream incubation, and then possibly using these dreams to write a personal novel of sorts.
Because it makes me feel free to do anything, and makes me feel better about myself, and it makes me look at things in a whole new perspective :)
I am a being with my awareness in a physical body which is male. But yeah I am a male :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, I tried to find any specific connections between some techniques, the recall or the supplements and stuff, but when I tried to find this it came to me that I should have asked more specific questions for example about the vividness of the dreams (like rate your vividness in your dreams from 1-10 etc.) dream control and how often one try to get lucid dreams etc.
But now it is ofc, to late, so I hope you guys aren't all too much disappointed.
I found few things though they may be obvious or not all that interesting, anyway here they are:
First of all, if you just use WILD alone you will gonna have a bad time, though there were some few two or three really successful by just using WILD, most of the people who just used WILD or in "combination" with DILD had overall more problems than people who used WILD in combination with ADA and/or WBTB.
Second, WBTB is the champion, really people who used it in combination with other Techniques where overall better, than people who did not use it in combination with other techniques, so my advice for everyone, try out WBTB, give it a chance and stay persistent!
Third, DILD alone fails, really maybe it works for some, but alone it fails harder than WILD.
Fourth, and what surprised me the most, some people even though they used/or maybe because they used supplements failed totally, but okay I don't know if they try to get lucid dreams every week, or every month so.. anyway most of them who used supplements even if it were just extra vitamins had just few lucid dreams spread over the whole year and also trouble to remember their non-lucid dreams. Ofc there were also some exceptions, but those who failed with supplements outnumbered those who used supplements successful, any specific successful or bad supplements I could not make out.
Fifth, The ones who had more experienced, meaning the older (age-groups) ones, who started early in their youth, who took the survey were more successful than any other age group in getting lucid dreams. (Ofc, the younger ones where in the majority, so maybe it was just coincidence that the old ones who participated were generally better.)
Sixth, Most of them who participated/or are participating in a DVA class have quite a success with lucid dreaming, so if you're new try to participate in one class, it helps :) But ofc, it is not a guarantee if you don't do something yourself or a "must do" if you want to succed in Lucid dreaming, just a neat help from DV for getting you started and helping you on your way to frequent lucid dreams.
So the conclusion is, find the technique you're most comfortable with and stay persistent, don't take supplements immediately when you start out, first if all other ways fail and experience aka persistence will pay out :shadewink:
(Please remember that many of the listed supplements have side effects, so I do not advice of taking any of them. So before taking any of them, please make sure you inform yourself about the possible side effects and consequences they can have, Lucid Aids).

Wow! What a great survey. Thanks for taking the time to this this. I actually found some of those answers to be a little surprising :)

The why did you start lucid dreaming was very intresting, I don't even know which is mine anymore.
It's also good to know that canadian is considered a gender these days :cheeky:

Nice work, Oceandrop!
For what it's worth, sometimes not finding anything new, or rather confirming with reasonable evidence what we already thought to be true, is worth more than discovering something completely novel.
Thanks for your effort, and I look forward to part 2!

Interesting survey! Thanks for taking the time to put this all together and showing us the results. I'm sure most people would be happy to complete a second survey if you want to make one and add more questions! :)

Hey, thanks for the feedback so far guys.
Though I have phrased it a bit wrong @ the supplements it sounds a bit too harsh, anyway a good followup question could have been if the ones who take supplements think it helps them or if it has increased the happening of lucid dreams for them or something like that. Also I will probably at some time do another survey, but it will probably take some time.
Glad that you all enjoyed the survey so far!

Hey, is there any way that we can get more info from the survey? For instance:
Who all uses ADA and how often they LD.
How many people WILD and their age groups.
Things like this would be great I think.
I feel weird asking for more since you gave us some good (freaking amazing) info in here already. :P

I don't really see too many girls here normally, so I figured that it would end up lopsided like that.

is MILD basically a WBTB? you are supposed to wake up, then DJ then lie back down and go through the MILD process right?
i imagine WILD alone is rough, i have had only one true mild before.
i don't understand why your graph says 24% of people have DILDs but then in your conclusions you say "DILD alone fails"?

also, what is "ADA"? when i search it it says "Sorry no matches" it's not in the DV acronym list either.

it said that 24% of people put DILD, but it was actually 24% of all the votes on that. The amount that DILD is 69% many people use DILD with other techniques. He could tell that the people that put just DILD didn't have as many or as consistent LDs as those that added something to it.

so one last thing: WBTB is boss right? but only when combined with something else? what else?
would combining it with MILD be good? or WILD? or in theory does practicing lots of RCs during the day, noting dreamsigns in your journal, and then doing WBTB make DILD highly likely as you're technically combining techniques (ie: activating the brain with wakefulness and then it's conscious enough to recognize dreamsigns after you go back to sleep)? if you do lots of dream journaling to look for dreamsigns and you do lots of RCs you have DILDs covered, then if you WBTB and WILD or MILD back to sleep that should be the ultimate combination, no?
my success rate has always been non recorded so even though i've had lots of lucid dreams i've never figured out an X factor formula of what REALLY works.
i practice mindfulness (samma sati, nearly identical to the ADA technique) always and that alone has gotten success for me long ago, but i think technology is ruining this for many; checking your phone, watching you tube videos, reading articles, sending texts is not the best way to be deeply aware of reality...
that actually explains why dream yoga works wonders for monks who have lots of time to focus on reality, especially long ago (pre smart phones and electricity), and few have great success with it today! wow i'm rambling, sorry. good night.
