Starting to get discouraged, don't know what to do any more.

I have been trying to lucid dream for about three weeks now, I think. I had my first lucid dream (DILD) within the first few days, although it was only a few seconds because I got excited. Well up until the past few days, I have been extremely dedicated, motivated, andexcited about everything. Now I am starting to feel less motivated. I think it is just because I have not been getting any results. I don't want to give up, because I really want to learn to lucid dream. I am just not feeling as motivated as I was for the first few weeks.

So what can I do to get myself motivated again? Also, what techniques do you think I should try to regularly practice? I really have no idea, and I am getting overwhelmed trying to figure out what technique I should work on for a while.

I think you should maybe take a week off from doing RCs and stuff and from trying. Many people report getting a LD the moment they stop trying.

After that, concentrate on method that get you your first one. I assume it was MILD/DILD. That is the best method to start with. Check out the tutorial in WIKI, or join a class in DV Academy - Intro, General, or one of the techniques.

Reading DV DJs, even your old dreams, and participating in forums can get your motivation up. Happy dreams:alien:

Don't expect full fledged lucid dreams every night, your just going to be disappointed. Instead focus on the small victories, momentary lucidity, or even if you just have slightly more awareness. Maybe your dream recall goes up. Any small thing like that is still success, just enjoy the process, and don't get discouraged, and above all else, just remember you can pull it off.

More awareness, a small amount of lucidity, better dream recall. All things you need to have in your DJ for understanding your sleep more. :P I definitely agree with small victories.

I recomend keeping a goal journal with really easy goals/goals that make you push yourself/long term goals.

Plus... three weeks man. Not to be rude, but that is nothing. :P if you want to LD that bad, then you have to put in the effort or you didn't want it enough. I had a random LD that started me with LDing, and it took me about 2 months to have another one. if you want to LD you have to count the cost and how far you are willing to go before quitting. You have been LDing for 3 weeks and have 1 LD. That is better than most everyone.

Also encouragement is to watch movies about dreams, or with all the movies you watch imagine that they are dreams and what you would do in that universe, it will give you lots of good ideas and is just fun. Books are awesome as well. I feel like residing a book is almost like dreaming anyways.

You are (presumably) practicing for DILD, an unreliable induction device. You got excited because of your heart rate. If you can feel your heart flutter in a dream, that means you're too excited, and if you don't stabalize the dream you'll be on the way out. I, personally, don't experience this when I discover I'm dreaming but do when I am about to (you know... :hump: ) in an LD (sorry to be crude). Anyways, one thing you can do to help solve your problem is to focus on all of your senses. Remember, a dreamer has ten senses: the ones linked to the dream body, and the ones linked to the earthly body. Focussing on what you see and feel should calm you down. In fact, I recomend using this method of stabalization in ALL cases when LDing. The other thing you can do is to use a more direct and reliable method. The reason why you're demotivated is your lack of LDs, so WILDing will put you in control when you want to LD. Most people would not recommend a WILD to beginners, but I believe that if you master it, it will help you. Check out some of the great tutorials the DV community has to offer.

A few pointers for WILD:

-DO NOT be scared of SP. Oftentimes, people exagerate SP, and you will only experience it directly if you atually try to get out of bed. Mostly, SP occurs in the morning for people with sleep disorders. If you are afraid, you're HH will be scary. Contrariwise (is that a real word? lol), if you are relaxed the HH will be passive. Many people don't even realize they are going through it. As long as you don't open your eyes you'll be fine...

-The goal is not SP. Don't think about trying to reach a stage, just pay attention to the fact that you're going to be dreaming. So... instead of focussing on that evil hallucination that will be by your bed if you open your eyes prematurely :vampire: , just ignore it and do the dirty work

-DO NOT get caught up in HH and HI. These are fragments of dreams, and nothing to worry about. People who aren't even trying to WILD have them at the onset of sleep all the time. Be a passive observer: you want to see what they are, but don't take them as real scenarios. Maintain your awareness especially throughout these fragments. DON'T brush this aside; it's harder than it looks. One minute you could be meditating intently and the other chatting to you're homicidal imaginary friend that killed his own unicorn :shock: . This is the number one reason for failure at WILD at least for me...

-Keep awareness. You will naturally wander to other subjects but realize they are not your focus, but always revert your attention to awareness of your current mental state. Remember the thoughts will be totally random and somewhat similar to this: :rockon: . Don't go more than 10 seconds away from awareness because this will direct your attention elsewhere, and believe it or not you will completely forget the matter at hand. The mind is a strange organ... It seems unlikely right now, but you WILL fall asleep unlucidly if you don't keep your attention.

-Pretend like you aren't trying to fall asleep but are trying to relax without moving your body.

-Get ready for the vibes... While many people experience SP to a varying degree, the key indicator is the vibrations. Most report a gentle buzzing sensation, but I experience violent thrashing convulsions. It is almost painfully electric. I feel like I get shocked by lightning every WILD, but don't worry; this severity isn't common...

-After sleep paralysis, (whether you experience it noticably or not) you will be left with a feeling like "what now?" It will be blackness, and you can think, but you will no longer be awake. Don't worry, this is an unnatural state, so the brain will quickly populate your conscience with imagery. These may or may not turn into long lasting dreams. After all, dreams are just subconscious thoughts without any external input to prevent them from manifesting. If you find yourself having trouble, then just open your eyes. Don't worry about opening your waking eyes, just go for it. If you really are asleep, your brain will be forced to generate a dream scene. It will most likely be your bedroom which brings us too...

-Reality check when you get on the other side! Mostly, people have FAs during WILD so be sure to pay attention to fine details

You really just have to find what works best for you... If you are good at DILD or want to get better, go for it, but I strongly recommend you try one of the WILD methods. (There are many, usually used with WBTB... my personal fav being DEILD... Check it out.) Sorry for the wall of text, lol.

@Jabre what is weird is when you feel all 10 senses at once, that is trippy. :P

Also. I have been LDing for 5-6 months, mostly just the last 4 though, and I have been practicing both WILD and DILD and their counterparts (all LDs fall into one of these two classifications) and I am a natural at DILD, and I have been very consistent at trying both methods with exceeding confidence and hard work. I have found though that WILD is just harder for me. I have had 2 straight up WILDs, and a DEILD, so three total.

But some people just suck at WILD, and I don't think I will be able to get good at it until I practice a lot more. So I don't think DILD is an unreliable induction device (look at hukif), it just isn't what you are good at. :P I wish I could swap that with you, WILDs are trippy. I mean I was just laying in bed and then BAM! Fence! Haha.

Remember that it takes time, progress is progress, good job on the first, it wont be the last im sure.

I know it's only 3 weeks, and it's not that long. I guess my expectations were just too high, and I ended up getting disappointed from it. I have recently noticed, though, that my dream recall has gone up greatly since I started dream journaling. I will definitely start focusing on the small things, and remembering that the small things are still a success. Thank you!

I know, I know. 3 weeks is not that long at all haha. Like I said above, I guess my expectations were too high, and I was expecting quick and easy results, and when I realized that is not the case, I got disappointed. I was never planning on quitting though. I just needed a little motivation to get back up and going. Thanks for the tips!

This is the first time that I have seen someone straight up say that even though I am a beginner, mastering WILD would really help me. I felt the exact same way, which is why I have actually tried WILDing for a while. Actually, I have tried a bunch of different techniques since I started trying to lucid dream, which I think got me very overwhelmed, and I couldn't decide what to do. I definitely want to master WILDing sometime in the future, once I am better at, and have the feel for lucid dreaming.

lol yeah... instead of saying DILD was unreliable, what I meant was that it might not be good for him at the moment... or he just needs practice... i'm not a psychologist so idk... my best dreams were DILD, because its easy for beginners. I just don't get why he isn't picking it up... I'm perplexed! :uhm:

I don't get it either. Do you think that I should try DEILDing for a few weeks? That is what I am thinking. Do you think that would be a good idea?

Sounds like he really is picking it up. I think that you should try one method for at least a month before giving up, and then tweaking it and making sure to write down what makes you have more vividness and awareness, such as sleeping time and length as well as diet and time you exercise. I only had 1 LD for my first 2 months without DJing and now I am getting about 12-15 a month. This is only like 5 months after starting. My DJ has all the numbers. :P

Anyways, don't be perplexed, he is doing good, not bad. that is what I am trying to say. :D
