I've heard that trying to keep perfectly still while falling asleep, Ignoring sensations like itches and holding an image of where you'd like to go are good ways of becoming lucid. Although these haven't worked for me I'd like to know from you guys if these techniques are at all useful. Since I'm a beginner I'd also like to find out if there are any additional strategies to the DILD technique that work but aren't mentioned that you've tried.
DILD is not a technique, is a method of lucid dreaming induct. It refers to getting lucid inside a dream (as oppose to WILD, which lucidity is achieved by being conscious even before entering the dream), which can be achieved by basic exercises like reality checks, questioning, mantras, visualization, and by techniques that focus on several aspects of memory/awareness/intention etc. MILD is an example of them.
I'd suggest you to give this WILD tutorial a read, and rest assured that ignoring sensations is not really a "must do". If by trying to ignore them you end up paying attention and loosing focus, then you will actually be harming your progress. The best is just move if you want to move, scratch your nose if you feel itchy. Soon enough, you'll start falling asleep as you're actually relaxed, in opposition to trying to behave like a corpse :)
WILD is actually pretty useful because if you learn how to time it, and how relax in order to fall asleep while maintaining a tiny bit of consciousness, it can be very effective for lucid dreaming induction. The thing you should keep in the mind is that WILD is not a single way for lucidity. DILD + WILD is the most effective way, because even if you fail/ don't feel like performing one, you'll have the other. Besides, even with WILD, you can sometimes loose lucidity, so you'll have extra supports from the many techniques that can help you achieving a DILD ;)
