I'm afraid to lucid dream. I'm afirad that I will have a nightmare and won't be able to stop it. My stepdad scarred me for life when I was little by showing me a bunch of horror movies, and now I am so scared. Help :C
Lucid dreaming isn't a Dangerous hobby. It won't kill you. Even if you were to die in a dream, you would really just wake up. Also, when you are lucid dreaming, you are able to control yourself and do anything. That means ANYTHING Imaginable. Including waking up on command. And eventually, when you have had lots of nightmares, or dreams in general, nightmares tend to become entertaining rather than overly horrifying. You've nothing to fear, i assure you.
Let me share what I do with nightmares. I'll share a handful of short dreams to give you an idea.
Dream 1, monsters confused by questions
I'm being chased by a monster, I get tired of running so I turn around and ask "Hey, why are you chasing me?" The monster replies "I don't know." to which I respond "Well, then quit it." The monster shrugs, says "okay" and then flies off.
Dream 2, Ninjas are either light or they are me
I'm being attacked by about 50-60 ninjas. I become lucid and use telekinesis to pick them up with my mind and toss them into the sky. They disappear over the horizon. There's still one left, he and I are equals and my powers do not work on him. I then realize something and say "wait, if this is all in my mind, then you are a part of me. How could I possibly defeat myself?" then the answer became obvious "I just stop fighting." The ninja then stands up straight, bows, then throws a smoke bomb and disappears.
Dream 3, I'm OUT!
Being chased by monsters through a dark forest. Tired of the chase, I become lucid. I fall out of the trees, close my eyes and focus on where I want to be. When I open my eyes I have teleported to a nice beach. I grab a drink and go lay in the sun.
Dream 4, Predators become Prey:
Monsters begin raining for the sky and eating people. I realize I'm dreaming, I don't like this one bit. I turn myself into a monster and instead begin attacking and eating the monsters.
Lucid dreaming actually gives us a tool by which we can overcome these nightmares. The only nightmares which I have trouble with are those which engage the lower portions of my brain. For instance, I don't care how lucid I am, I have a hard time avoiding a full on freak out if I've got bugs in my hair. Other than that, it's all groovy. Lucid dreaming gives us the ability to become the gods of our own dreams. Nightmares are nothing to such gods.
In all honesty, if you're worried about nightmares then regular dreaming is what you would have to worry about. Lucid dreaming is actually what many people use to overcome nightmares. In a normal dream, you won't have control of the situation. But being lucid gives you the ability to change your dream as you please.
Lucid dreaming doesn't cause anyone to have nightmares, if that's what you're worried about.
Honestly I have had crazy lucid nightmares. They are extremely fun for me. Nothing like being scared for your sanity. :P But there is really nothing scary about LDs in general.
Nightmares are stemmed from three places:
Lack of belief in yourself
You don't think that you are able to cooperate in circumstances and when anything pops up in a lucid dream, you lose control. example:
"Someone is coming to kill you!"
"Ah! I am gonna die!" nightmare start. Someone is lurking around every corner to kill you now.
Day residue
You think thoughts all the time about horror things happening, from watching scary movies and reading scary stories (like creepypasta, Edgar Allen Poe, H. P. Lovecraft). This will cause it to seep in your dreams. People that this happens to are normally more welcome to nightmares though. :) Involuntary thoughts can seep through too though, like if you see something through the day that is similar to something you saw that was scary when you were a kid.
Fear of everything
This one and the first one are types of day residue (Which is my opinion of how dreams are made, schema taken seemingly at random from your day). But in this one you are afraid of things all day and it of course seeps into your dreams where expectation takes over. This is worse if you are actually afraid of nightmares because you know on a subconscious level that you are dreaming and being afraid of that, expectation would take over.
All of these have nothing to do with lucidity, but if you are lucid you can escape, face your fears, and/or take more control of your confidence. What exactly are you afraid of?
Another thing to keep in mind: not only do lucid dreams give you the power to overcome nightmare, but also dream recall can help you realize that you have nightmares. You may think that that's not a good thing but it is because if you do not know that you have nightmares then you will be stressed and in a bad mood, and will not understand that part of that would be better understood if only you could recall your dreams. See we always dream, and the dreams we have can influence our mood and stress level, and if we do not remember, then you don't understand that part of yourself, and can't do anything about it. Then when you recall the dreams, you may remember nightmares, and realize that there is a problem. But how do you solve this problem? Lucid dreaming is one of the solutions to nightmares.
