Well it doesn't always work. Another key with RCs is you have to believe that it will work. Like in waking life every time you do an RC you have to completely know that it will work.
i see where you are coming from, i can imagine once i have a few LD's, and the reality checks work, in real life i will truly question whether i am dreaming, especially if the dream feels just like real life. however for the time being i sort of just take for granted the fact i KNOW im awake and so kind of halfheartedly do the reality check.. but im working on questioning my surroundings and trying to believe this might just be a dream
Combine them, use 2-3 at the same time, and really question it whether you are dreaming or not.
I recently had the finger through palm reality check fail as well, after I had observed my family disappear into thin air. That's when I decided that since I was not dreaming, I must have gone completely crazy. :) And in the rest of the dream I was kind of panicked because of my mental state, since things were happening that do not happen to sane people in waking life.
Another time though, I was on an elevator when I noticed someone pulled out a card table to play poke there. But I had no problem with that. What got to me was that the elevator buttons had the numbers in the wrong order. So I looked away, looked back, but the numbers staid unchanged! However, that time I told myself "screw that, I know I am dreaming!" Regardless of RC fail. And at that point the elevator buttons obliged me and rearranged themselves, into a different wrong order.
So yes, RC fail happens.
Oh yes, it was scary, especially since I was quite aware and conscious and present in this dream, and continued analyzing my situation, and yes, it was a nightmare while it was happening. Though in hindsight after waking up I chose to be amused instead that my mind finds it more believable that I would go crazy than dream.:panic:
