when will I have one?
As of today, I have been trying to have a lucid dream for 2 weeks. First off, I have been doing RCs regularly, but I don't know that I'm doing enough. I've been trying to practice awareness more, although that isn't coming along very easily. And lastly I have been recording my dreams in a journal, but I am still having trouble remembering even seconds after I wake up.
My question is, what am I doing wrong? How did all of the experienced LDers on here get to the point where they actually started having LDs?

You'll have one tonight.:D That should be your mindset.
When something isn't working for a couple of weeks, it's time to try something different. If you're not doing it already I recommend adding MILD to your lucid induction practice. (MILD Tutorial - Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views) It can take a lot of time to build enough in-dream awareness to lucid dream with just ADA and reality checks alone. Using the power of intention using MILD can give you results a lot quicker.
I started inducing LDs when I found that MILD works well for me.

It's different for everone. It took me a month to have my first lucid dream. And once you practice enough and write in your dream journal a lot, even if you stop practicing, you may still have an lucid dream every once and a while, not often, though. You get used to the feeling of being in a dream and can reconize it more easily. It seems to be a skill that I've been able to keep for a long time, even after retiring on lucid dreaming. At least, for me, that's the case. XD

Had a very vivid dream last night, and in it I remembered some thought from real life. Also, when I woke up, I immediatley realized that in the dream my shorts had changed colors- from blue to white. I just wish I could realize this while I'm having the dream... also, I tried MILD, seemed to work decently. I told myself to wake up after my dreams, and I did wake up after my most vivid one.

I've been trying to LD for 4 months now , and i only got 1 dream where i dream about lucid dreaming, and one where I saw my hand had 7 fingers on it , and kinda realized it for a second that i am dreaming , but it was not vivid enough and i wandered off. So yeah, every night i hope for a Lucid dream :D Also don't be upset or disappointed when you don't have LD or even dream after trying hard, maybe it's the next night you're having it... who knows.
Also i have a dream journal with over 30 entries over these 4 months and every one of them could've been a LD, but instead they were just normal dreams(some of them were amazing and were quadruple chain combo and vivid, but still normal dreams).
Just don't stop trying :)

The dream journal is my most important tool, and although it is easy to forget dreams seconds after awakening, it really helps to practice not moving when you wake up. As soon as you wake up, keep your eyes closed and don't move, then relax and you will remember your dream. At first it may only be a flash, but that will bring the rest of the dream back.
It also helps to keep a note book next to your bed, so when you wake up in the middle of night, too tired to write in your journal, you can jot down a few key words. This really helps me, and I always remember the rest of the details after doing this.
My other favourite tool is a few times a day, I stop, and instead of doing a RC, I imagine that I am in a dream. I think to myself (like playing 'make-believe- as a kid) "Wow, those walls look so real," and I touch them "they feel so real. My brain is awesome at creating things that are so lifelike" etc. This works really well for me.
Good luck!
