Could be wrong (2 minutes of research haven't given me anything useful), but it's probably because when you are sick it's N-REM sleep that has the largest benefits, since it's the one who is "mostly" responsible for physical restoration. More N-REM= less rem, less rem= less chances for lucidity.
PS: zoth starts thinking: if this revealed to be indeed true, that means we'd have advantages to prescribe sleep medication for people with certain conditions, like flu/colds or something more serious. After all, isn't this why we sometimes put patients into induced comma?
