So why do we wake up when REM starts to do technique? I always remember the most fresh and detailed dreams when the REM cycle ends, so why not do WBTB in the middle or last 30min of REM...?

because you have less time to do stuff in the dream.
Yea but isn't dream time different. It feels like u can do an hours worth of stuff in 10min WL. Just thought maybe it would be easier to enter a dream after REM already started bec you have already been dreaming. Idk I just randomly thought of this today.
Actually time is the same in dreams as in waking life.
You don't have to target REM from the start, but having more REM when you wake up means having more dream time. It may be easier to target the middle of REM for a WBTB to make sure that you hit it(bcz if your WBTB wasn't exactly at the middle of REM, it would be at the start or late part of that REM cycle), but more REM means more dream time.
Well Jers, REM Sleep is defined as "a kind of sleep that occurs at intervals during the night and is characterized by rapid eye movements, more dreaming and bodily movement, and faster pulse and breathing." The key part there is 'more dreaming' - We usually wake up at the start/near the beginning of a REM Period to do our various techniques simply because it is the time in your sleep were you're more likely to dream. We use this as a 'guide' if you will of when we will (most likely) dream.
TL;DR - REM Sleep is when most of your dreams occur, so we begin most of our 'techniques' then to prolong our time in lucidity.
