First, I'm sorry about your father and that your dream brought up some uncomfortable emotions. I can relate in a way, and it's never pleasant.
As far what it means, no one can tell you for sure. Like dream dictionaries, they only give you a general idea of what something may or may not mean, but they can never give you an exact answer. That's not to say there isn't any hope.
I don't believe every single dream we have has some underlying meaning to it. I've had dreams where it was just random images from the television shows I watched that day, and other dreams just as superficial. Although, others do have importance to them. Lucid dreaming allows us to figure out the "why" behind what we dream. Self-exploration, really.
People consult dream characters, but get mixed results. I would either ask your father in your dream why he appeared, or ask your subconscious or "dream guide" as some prefer to use. I wouldn't worry too much about the answer. I've read accounts where people confront their nightmares and discover it was just a symptom of an underlying feeling of something like stress or some form of fear. Nothing really--for lack of a better word--"traumatic."
I hope this helps you at least a little, and you find the answers you're looking for.
