It's possible, but if you have trouble with dream recall you're not likely remember your lucid dreams. The dream journal is to help you build up your dream recall and also it will help tell your brain that your dreams are important to you. It will also help you find commonalities between your dreams to see what you dream most about so that you can use them as your dream signs. It's also pretty fun to go back and reread your past dreams. I think it's an essential tool for LDing, but some people get by without it or by just writing their most important dreams. Do you have a reason why you don't want to have a journal?

Yeah it is possible but I highly recommend one. Before I started one I would remember maybe a dream every couple days and they would be gone an hour later. I usually remember a dream each night now and looking back through the journal I can recall the environment and what it looked like from dreams a month before.
