Can a DC Lie to You?
Just searched the sight real quick, and no one has asked this, surprisingly.
I've realized that dream characters can be a few things when asking them questions: ignorant, cryptic, or plain dismissive. But can they be deceitful?
If you can have DC's that guide you through complex lucid dreaming abilities, surely it should be in their potential to lie. I guess the tricky part is catching one in the act to know that they actually did lie.
If this is true, then information gathering from DC's would have a new layer of difficulty to them. It's hard enough when some won't answer your questions or as just plain wrong. But to have some trying to deter you from the truth? If DC's could do this, then certainly this would be a new warning everyone should be made aware of.
I haven't had this experience. At least, not that I know of. Have any of you had a DC lie to you, or at least suspect one having done so?

Yes they can lie. They lie most of the time cause they react to what's occurring in their surroundings. Also, dream characters have different personalitys. So yes, they can be deceitful. In one of my dreams a lady dream character said the sewers was the best way out of a building. That's just stupid though. I flew out of there with no problem.

I wouldn't consider it lying, since DC's aren't sentient beings with minds of their own. They're just simple characters created to serve their purpose in the dream, like story characters or game characters. Can a video game character lie? No, they can't actually do anything, because they don't have an independent existence, they're just synthetic constructs; pixels and recorded voices. The thread title is like asking "can a character in a story lie?" - of course not. Only people can lie - words printed on paper can't. Neither can imaginary characters created to play their role in a dream script.

More than lies, they might come with very random stuff... like nonsense stuff or very profound stuff, but all of these generally are reflections from your subconscious.

Ask them if this is a dream. They will probably say it is not a dream. Does that make them liars, or just dumb? Hmmmm

They will lie, exhibit pain, be your parents. Get this, if you are lucid dreaming, believe you can fly and you will, believe you can go in space, youll do that, fear will wake you up, but you can breath in space, in your dreams.

By the way, a dream character wont lie in showing you a lie, they may show you a fear, an interpretation

It's an interesting question, and from my perspective the answer is far from obvious.
In order to be deceitful, one has to be aware of speaking a falsehood for the purpose of misleading.
If DC's are created by the dreamers mind, then in order to be deceitful, they need awareness. And whether they've got that or not is certainly not clear at present. Some people would evade the issue by simply defining it away (DC's cannot be aware, because they are figments of your imagination), but actually understanding the concept of multiple awarenesses within one person is not easy. Cells are generally living beings in the own right, and we humans are built out of them: do the cells have their own awareness? Logic would suggest that they do, but can we prove it? And how about thoughts ..? Here it gets really tricky.
On the other hand, if DC's are actually fellow dreamers, then deceitfulness should certainly be possible.
On a more practical level: it's been my experience that we tend to get, what we expect to get. Thus, expecting deceit from a DC should bring it about - or at the least it would seem to have been brought about ... ;-)

Yes, they can lie for sure.
But, if they are a manifestation of yourself, as some believe, does that mean you are lying to yourself? O_o
I have had DCs lie to me in very painful ways.
They can be real jerks.

A character in a story can lie. If you script them to lie to another character. How else did you think Pinocchio grew such a big nose? He lied. :P If a character in a story can lie than so can game characters. Just because they don't have a human brain doesn't mean they can't be independent beings. You just have a human brain so you can move around with that human body of yours. The computer is proof enough that it is possible to create a character like that without a human brain.Maybe in the future technology will be a lot better that game characters will actually have their own personality and be like humans. You need to be more open minded to that possibility. : ) Oh and if you still think programed characters cant lie. You should have a nice chat with cleverbot.
