As an experienced "practitioner" of Self Awareness, I can say that yes, that happens in the beginning stages of developing a lucid mindset.
For me though, once I got more practice in, I would still be extremely aware throughout the day, and realize that I could be dreaming at any moment, but it would be effortless and literally second nature, so the only time I really became conscious to a lucid level was when something weird happened. It sounds ironic but it actually worked for the better considering the fact that it brought me at least 1 lucid dream every night, and even then, half of my REM dreams were semi-lucid.
If you are going to give the entire Awareness thing a try Ruby, my advice: Once you get started, stick with it because the rewards in the end are great. I tell many people who want to give the lucid mindset a try the exact same thing. Persistence and determination have never been so powerful in a technique. Self Awareness truly is the best technique in my opinion, and it doesnt require alot of work at all once you get it down.
Theres no doubt that if you keep this awareness going that it will carry over into your dreams consistently in no time. From what you've said, you sound more aware than I was in the start of my practice with awareness, great job!
