How long are your typical lucid dreams? and how long did you take to get to that point?
about 25% of my lucid are becoming aware and failing to remain in dream
about 25% are brief like 15sec to 1min
about 25% are about 1-5 minutes in length
about 25% are 5-20 minutes in length
Sometimes you are just waking up but don't believe there is nothing you can do to extend a dream, just yesterday I was in a dream walking down a road when I reached the end (it had become all pillars and marble) there was a glass window, as I looked thru the window it was obvious I was dreaming there were temples and domed buildings and pillars and stone paths all set in water below me. I looked and said oh yea this is a dream, look at all the detail, I could see the glass in front of me, and I could see the moon low in the sky and as I looked I demanded more and more detail. Give me more, more, more. And the dream responded I could see effects in the water texture on the stones, it was awesome and it lasted for about 10 seconds, the detail was amazing right up until.............
VOID
Ok so what now, toss it into category 1, round up to category 2. No detail, total blindness = dream over, if I had accepted it then it would have been, but I was in the mood to fight (never commit to just fighting the void tho, if you do you'll be in there forever, I once actually said out loud in the void "I want to fight the void" my expectation's response: I was in there for at least 3.5 minutes fighting, paralyzing and unparalyzing until I finaly thought what will it take to wake up (aw that did it)), instead of fighting for no point, fight to return to a dream, you may be blind but you are still asleep. So I began to rub my hands, I could feel my sense of touch going. I don't think so, So I rubbed harder and harder until I could feel again, when one of my hands would begin to paralyze I would just twist the direction of rubbing bend my arm more do what ever it takes to hold the dream. I began to think 'return to a dreamscape' 'return to a dreamscape' but nothing, then I began to notice a lot of light and remembered that the room lights were on when I fell asleep, I was at the edge of the dream, stimuli from real world is leaking in I've been blind for at least 90 seconds, give it up, I don't think so. I decided since I felt I was lying down (propioception knowing the position of your body or in this case dream body) I would stand up 'just stand up and start walking' as soon as my feet hit the floor. POW vision returned it was a false awakening but no need to test (my expectation was that every detail would be wrong in the place and it was).
I was able to buy another 90 seconds of a new lucid dream (tho I count it as one dream)
So this dream was a total of around 3.5 to 4 minutes
sure you could think must really suck to be in a lucid for maybe half the time blind
but this is a dream that I was able to learn a lot from
Don't give up when your dream ends 5 seconds in, fight even if all you learn is that you can clap in the void, whistle in the void, scream in the void, even if you never regain sight and you only last 10 more seconds rubbing your hands or slapping yourself in the face, you'll learn a bunch about how to survive the void next time :) if you decide to scream: SCREAM "I'M NOT GIVING UP MY LUCID not after 5 seconds not after 15 GIMME A DREAMSCAPE"
I have many that are just quick flashes of realizing what I am seeing is only a dream, so perhaps 30 seconds or so. I often have around 5 minutes or so of good lucid stuff. On some less common occasions 20 minutes is easy enough. Perhap 20 times a year I am lucid virtual the last half of the night. I watch transitions in sleep phase and o in and out of REM lucid. Some of the actual dream sequences stretch 60-90 minutes.
How long? Maybe lifetimes, but at least 7 or 8 years before 30 minute ones became likely, and maybe 15 years for the longer ones.
Mine were probably 1-2 minutes, but today I awoke after a 10-15 minutes LD. It's pretty interesting when you get a long LD. I think time seem to pass quickly while lucid dreaming, but I can't really say for sure.
I am in my room. I want to go to the best bar in the city. After intention I walk to the toilet door, and I step inside the bar. I want to speak to my best frend. I turn around, and my friend is sitting there. So far this was 1 minute. In reality: From my house to the bar, with the bus: 25 minutes + my friend arrives in half hour (maybe).
So, I always think, that in a 15 minutes dream you can do many-many things.
My usual lucid dream is 10-15 minutes, although I had few lucids lasting more than hour, but it was not so pleasant as it sounds.
Is there a way I can train myself to make a typical lucid dream last 20 minutes? or does it depend only on REM and I can't do anything about it?
Step 1: gain experience until lucid dreams are no big deal. You need to be able to reach them in some what deeper sleep stages. Your first ones are always on the edge of waking.
Step 2: learn stabilization techniques. You will find many threads explaining that here.
60% 1-5 min
30% 10-20 min
10% 30+ min
For me, it seems to increase as my dream recall and general practice increases. My second to latest lucid was one that showed up completely out of the blue, after a long period of no practice, and yet, it was my longest lucid yet (about 5 minutes), and I even stabilized the dream for the first time, which contributed to the longer amount of time.
While I don't have much experience with it myself, stabilization does help if you do it right, and just keeping up to date on practicing techniques, writing in your dream journal every day, and staying interested seems to increase the length of lucids, even if it's only by a little.
Just my thoughts. :chuckle:
