Things starting to get real with SP, never been more aware - or afraid.

There I was, lying in my bed, ready to fall a sleep, with no intention of lucid dreaming or having it in my mind at all. And then, like its been happening lately, a split second decision lies in front of me, wake up or fall into sleep paralysis. I choose to dive in, and once again try and stay calm and relaxed, or rather just observe the weirdness of the experience.

The moment I decided to let it happen, it did, I cannot move anymore, and I don't want to open my eyes (to avoid witnessing the weird paranormal (read:terrifying) shit I saw a few nights before).

The audio hallucinations are there, as usual, very loud, and I cannot get a hold of the sense of time. Since I didn't want to open my eyes, I waited to see what'll happen next. To my surprise, something happened which made my cry for help and pray to wake up. My hand moved itself from on the bed and into the air, it started moving slowly, and I clearly felt the touch of the bed on the hand while it was slowly leaving its position on the bed and moving upwards.

I used 110% of my intention to wake up from SP and escape from the terrifying feeling.., and I did, a few seconds later.

As I got up from my bed and started walking around the room, I thought to myself, did something just move my hand? Then I thought, oh wait! Maybe that was my astral body leaving my physical one, yes, that must be it! But, then I remembered that I felt the bed under my hand, therefore, it is clear that the astral explanation goes down the drain.., or does it?

I'd like someone to help me understand what happened, do you think my physical arm literally moved on its own, if yes, in what world? If this has been a lucid dream, I cannot describe how exciting this is! If this is really IT, the possibilities are endless, the level awareness is amazing, and I can't resist but to feel like I'm one step closer to being a part of the crew on U.S.S Enterprise...

Some history on my spiritual experiences and knowledge:

I've been occasionally reading up on things like yoga, meditation, astral projection and lucid dreaming for the last 5 years or so. Any of the above has always greatly brought both interest and excitement within me. I've been known to meditate once in a while, but not much, maybe just a couple of a dozen times in the past few years.

The interest in the above subjects came to me after I had my first SP, and I didn't have a clue what's happening back then. So I started reading about all that stuff online and learned many things. I've tried to astral project many times, but have never fully succeeded, I tend to lose motivation after a few days of trying, and then don't even try for a few months, and then go back to it.

Recently, the sleep paralysis started to happen more often - 3 times in just the past 7 days. Usually it happened once or twice in one or more months.

I think that definitely was a dream. The only thing this time was the subject was about sleep paralysis. Because you've experienced it before, you were probably already expecting hallucinations, which became apparent in the dream. Then, when your hand went up in the air, because you were thinking you were in sleep paralysis, you thought you had overcame and were about to wake up, which would often lead to thinking about your body right now, or in this case your REAL body. Every time you think about your real body in a dream, whether it be lucid or not, you will, in most cases, inevitably wake up, which is exactly what happened.

There are a lot of misconceptions on the internet about sleep paralysis being a necessary/unavoidable part of lucid dreaming.

While you might be experiencing sleep paralysis, it's also possible that what you're describing is the normal hypnagogic hallucinations that can happen as you consciously enter a dream (WILD).
Sageous (who runs the WILD class on DV) calls this "noise" - you can read more about it here:

Either way, it sounds like you were either already dreaming (lucidly!), or very close to it when you felt your arm moving.
Next time, try to stay calm and picture the dream scene forming around you. Sometimes it might take a few seconds for the dream to be ready, but I'm sure you'll be exploring your dreamworld soon enough!
One more thing - remember when you're dreaming, you don't need a body to move! Maybe you can try floating or rolling out of bed to see what happens. :sleepmeditate2:

ParanoidLlama, thank you for posting a reply into this thread, as well as thank you to everyone else who did, I really appreciate this! :)

Anyways, I am positive I entered SP. This is not a new experience for me, I've gone trough SP enough times to know; either voluntary or involuntary. I guess I started lucid dreaming after a few seconds into the SP - even though I don't clearly understand this part yet because, as I said, the audio hallucinations are instantaneous - each time I experienced SP - so, how can one hear things when he's fully awake and aware (minus body). - I read somewhere that during SP, our brain waves are in a different mode then usual, and this results into us being able to hear/access our subconscious mind? This is really starting to get confusing.

No, this wasn't some part-of-a-second thing where I felt my hand touch the bed. This lasted for seconds and I clearly had time to think about it, e.g. "What the hell, where's my hand going, why is this happening". etc. Imagine sitting there where you are reading this and having your arm start lifting it self up in the air, for at least 5 seconds after which you'd stop it.

I understand SP is not necessary for any kind of spiritual experiences, but it happens to me often, involuntary, it just comes around when I lie down to sleep, after a few minutes, I can feel the feeling overwhelming my body, and before it "completes" I can either choose to let it happen, to take me completely or choose to jump out of the bed in order to avoid it.

I need to make this clear, this WAS SP, seriously - there's no question about it. I'm only wondering why do I hear and see things if I'm in SP (the hypnagogic hallucinations) - didn't even know that's possible while in SP. Until now, I thought SP is merely a process in which one's situation is no different than being fully awake (except not being able to move your body).

People often say "just stay calm" - well, I can understand that but you also need to understand that sentence becomes MUCH MORE complicated when you can't move and something forces your eyes open and makes you watch.... Well, frightening stuff..

Dear DV members, something amazing just happened! :)

I just had the same experience, the body parts moving on its own - but without SP, or ANY kind of hallucinations!

This is the first time in 5 years I literally know and feel I'm making progress into lucid dreaming, or OBEs, APs, what ever exactly it may be.

Here's a recap of what occurred:

It's 20:44PM here right now, I got off work at 5PM and went home, had a meal, and played a newly installed game on my PC. I had fun, I ate again, chatted with friends and then decided to relax, lie down and find random videos about lucid dreaming on Youtube, watched a couple of personal experiences, some TEDxTalks and similar. Finally, around 7:30PM I decided to totally relax, close my eyes and try and become lucid.

While I didn't even enter the dream world (realm?) - something else which makes me happy did happen. I experienced the very same feeling of my hand moving like I did a few night before (the event I described when I started this thread).

So, why am I happy about this, didn't I say that event was terrifying? Yes, I did. But.. What's different now is that this event didn't include SP at all! I was fully aware I can move my body at will, I was simply lying there, trying to calm my mind and then it started to happen. The weird sensation which I described before which usually led me to SP but this time it kind of didn't go into that direction.

Few seconds of this energetic feeling (brain took the bait, thought it's time to sleep) - and my left hand started rising! I need to make this clear: Last and first time it happened - this was terrifying for me - my hand was moving involuntary, I was home alone, it was ~3AM, I heard VERY LOUD chatter and other audio hallucinations = paranoia.

Now, without the paranoia part, this was an amazing feeling. So..., what happened!?

I lost it! :\ Why? Got too excited, I wanted to let my hand rise high enough so I could see with my own eyes, whether my physical arm is actually moving, or does it just FEEL like it is. Unfortunately, as my arm got higher and higher, I got too excited over what I'll discover once it enters my line of sight. This excitement made m start to sweat and my heart to pump really fast.

My thoughts also went sideways. I was literally changing massive thoughts within split seconds; "OMG ITS HAPPENING STAY CALM WHERE?S THE HAND WAIT WHAT WHAT HEART WTF STOP GETTING EXCITED AM I STARTING TO SWEAT OMG IM GONNA LOSE IT DONT GOOOOO!!!!"... and it went, slowly, as it came, it went away, my heart started to beat slower and my hand went back into its place (if I had to guess, I'd say it moved ~10cm above the bed).

There I am, super excited, little bit disappointed but still really happy there was no paranoia. So, I just stayed there, lying the bed, getting fully calm again, deciding to give it another shot. Approx., 15 minutes later I felt it come again, but it didn't last for long, I lost full sense of my physical body but no movement, excitement was to blame once again, it drove the feeling away again.

After 10 more minutes of lying in bed I couldn't relax anymore, this was too much, I feel like my "spiritual progress bar" increased by 300%.

Anyways, I wanted to share this experience with everyone willing to read this post. Let me know what you think, I'm really looking forward to hearing what other people have to say! :)

Update June 17th, 2015

Just experienced something. As I said before, wake induced lucid dreams seem to get better for me. Recently I've been trying to WILD every time I get off work and come home. I lye in my bed, on my back, arms besides my body on the bed. When I started this thread, I talked about my first experienced where my left arm started lifting it self in the air. At the time that really scared me, but after reading more I now believe that is nothing but a lucid a dream. Only thing I can't understand is why have I literally never been lucid in any other dream situation but in my room.

I tried WILDing today as well, I actually just finished 15 minutes ago. This is what happened:

Was on my bet, set position, started as always with some breathing and relaxation techniques and 10-15 minutes later I got carried away with my thoughts and lost awareness of my self. Suddenly, I become aware instantly. My heart starts to beat more, my breathing is deeper and more intense, and I can feel my arm will move on its own again, I can now feel the energy going trough my arm and into my hand and how it makes effort to lift it up. This time I experienced a strong VERY WARM feeling striking trough my left leg, from toes to the top of the leg, never experienced that before.

Unfortunately, I seem to be doing something wrong (as I'm interested into what's going to happen) - after 10 or so seconds of those feelings, they start to get weak and slowly fade away, and then it's over, I get up from bed.

Anyone experienced this before? Does this sound like entering a lucid dream? Would really, really appreciate anyone contributing to this thread!

I think I would have freaked out too. I was at the in laws recently and my 3 year old slept with me n the mrs, it was late and I usually don't try WILD so rarely experience SP etc, this night though I realized I was half asleep and at that point, I too just stayed calm to see what happened. I could hear my 3 year old outside the door talking to my father in law. I could physically feel him next to me in bed also, so knew it wasn't real, but it was very weird n freaky.

Fellow dream viewers, just wanted to fill out my thread diary with an update.

I've been meditating more during the past few months, and I've got to say I see some changes happening with me. Not necessarily good too. I've noticed that I've become way more self-aware than before. I thought I will like this when I was reading about meditation "benefits" some time ago. As I've said, I've become much more self-aware, and something else as well. I can no longer ignore other people's emotions, and I can mostly see what's someone thinking or what mind state they're in when I take a few seconds look on to their face. I'm a listener, I love listening to people and giving advice and that's totally been fine with me, but now, I feel like I see trough a sad man's eyes and sometimes I even start getting this very strange feeling, almost like I start sharing what ever the other person is feeling.

So, if that can happen, I'm wondering, is it possible for me to share my happy feelings with these people? Plenty of times words don't make anyone sad feel better, especially if it's about a serious issues. That would be really great, I'd love more than anything to be able to somehow make people see the bigger perspective, above their 'local' problems and even above this life.

Back to self-awareness, I can no longer smoke weed. Yes, I've preferred the plant over alcohol for a few last years, and only on occasion - but the last 2 times I smoked I almost couldn't stand it. I took a look into the mirror into my own eyes while high and I felt like I will loose it. I looked at myself and said "Who are you?" - almost fell unconscious just from thinking who is the "REAL ME".

Something for the end; and my biggest curiousity of all of these things above:

You know when you're thinking about something, trying to figure it out etc you can "hear" yourself talking in your mind? Like speaking to yourself, and as you think about a certain thing, you pretty much image yourself speaking etc and the voice follows your thoughts.

For the last few nights, it's been vice versa for me. I lie down and these thoughts come to me, not the thought them self, but the VOICE. Literally identical as if someone else was in the room speaking to me, except it's ME. This really made me nervous for the past few nights. Maybe my thought process has changed? This voice is WAY MORE clearer, definitive and bright than anything I've experienced before.

If someone has had a similar experience, or has heard of such experiences, I'd appreciate if he or she could shed some light onto the subject for me. I've really gotten to love meditation and everything that goes with it (generally). However, I have to admit, a part of myself is worries I'll go nuts.
